Stopping Motion - FAST SHUTTER SPEED
A fast shutter speed can help to freeze action of an object in motion. Shutter speed stands for the length of time a camera shutter is open to expose light into the camera sensor. All of the detail in the moving object is in focus due to the small length of time light is exposed into the camera.

Correct Exposure
A correctly exposed image is a photograph that feels just bright or dark enough so that both the shadows and highlights are as they feel the most natural and comfortable to look at. A correctly exposed image should contain no lost highlights or shadows, meaning all the detail is clearly distinguishable and as close as possible to “real life”.

Over Exposure - TOO MUCH LIGHT
An over exposed image is a photograph that is brighter than it should be and can be considered over exposed. When too much light is allowed during an exposure, the result is an overly bright photograph. It shows very little detail and only the darkest parts are easy to make out.

Under Exposure - NOT ENOUGH LIGHT
An under exposed image is a photograph that is darker than it should be and can be considered under control. When less light is allowed during an exposure, the result is an overly dark photograph. It shows very little detail and only the brightest parts are easy to make out.

Great Depth of Field - ALL OF IMAGE IN FOCUS
Great depth of field is used to show all of image in focus where all of details can be viewed. The smaller the aperture set, more of the shot appears to be in focus, a larger depth of field. A wider aperture (e.g. f/5.6) will keep the foreground of the image a lot sharper, whereas a narrow aperture (e.g. f/22) will allow more of the shot to stay in focus. This allows the whole image to appear sharp for a great depth of field.

Short Depth of Field - FOREGROUND ONLY IN FOCUS
Short depth of field is often used to create an effect called “bokeh”, a word taken from the Japanese language that in its most simple translation means “to blur”. The smaller the aperture set, more of the shot appears to be in focus, a larger depth of field. A narrow aperture (e.g. f/22) will allow more of the shot to stay in focus, whereas a wider aperture (e.g. f/5.6) will keep the foreground of the image a lot sharper. This allows more background blur for a shorter depth of field.

Capturing Movement - SLOW SHUTTER SPEED
Slow shutter speed is often used to create an effect called “motion blur”. This is where moving objects appear blurred, creating a sense of speed and motion. This effect can be used to capture lightning or other forms of light in a dim environment, like the examples that I have produced with various LED’s and the use of a tripod.
