Citizen journalism in the form of tweets and other social media have brought attention to the largely ignored activists protecting Indigenous land. Trudeau’s reputation is more protected than their clean drinking water.

When social media influencer Tyler Oakley (branded as a “professional fangirl”) must defend American Women’s rights to access Planned Parenthood’s services - he does it with humor and wit that speaks to young (pop-culture saavy) following he caters to. In spite of the Vice President’s attempts to break ties with states, allowing them to defund Planned Parenthood, Oakley, a porudly homosexual young American man, can eloquantly address the issue by praising another figure who shares his popularity on Tumblr and Instagram, Shrek. Two lines - all he needs to demonstrate his opinion of Mike Pence’s decisions while also remaining funny and relatable. Oakley is a trailblazer for being the entertaining, approachable personality he is, while also using his reach and platform to speak out on an important cause.

Some of the great signs we saw at the tail end of the Women’s March yesterday. Assuming it was going to run as long as it did last year, we showed up after 3 and it was pretty much over. Oh, well. Patriotism vs. Nationalism

In light of the outcry surrounding American athletes kneeling during the National Anthem, I thought I’d briefly go over the difference between patriotism and nationalism.

The dictionary definition of patriotism is “devoted love, support, and defense of one’s country; national loyalty”. One of the definitions of nationalism, in contrast, is “excessive patriotism”.

Patriotism is supporting your country always, and your government only when it deserves it. - Mark Twain

The difference between patriotism and nationalism is that the patriot is proud of his country for what it does, and the nationalist is proud of his country no matter what it does; the first attitude creates a feeling of responsibility, but the second a feeling of blind arrogance that leads to war. - Sydney J. It is patriotic to call one’s country out on oppression in an attempt to force it to change and become a safer, more welcoming place for minorities.

It is nationalistic to insist that nothing is wrong and these “sons of bitches” are lucky to have made it this far in the first place.

Patriotism vs. Nationalism: often confused with each other, the definitions and demonstrations of these two clashing forces are demonstrated in the film Black Panther by the characters Nakia and W’Kabi.

Nakia demonstrates a love for her country, and support of it as a spy, working against the throne or state and leaving when the crown was usurped by Killmonger. She could not blindly support the invasion and declaration of war that Killmonger attempted to start, but worked to save her country despite the decision of who was in power.

W’Kabi, undoubtedly has a love for Wakanda as well. However, his pride in his country’s power and resources translated to supporting Killmonger’s liberation of black people over the world through military action.

Nakia proposed opening Wakanda’s borders to welcome refugees. While W’Kabi felt bringing in refugees would cause them to “bring their problems with them”

Nakia patriotically represents dissent: the expression or holding of opinions at variance with those previously, commonly, or officially held. Refusing to blindly follow Killmonger’s invasion on the rest of the world, she helped T’Challa reclaim the throne and support the country’s social outreach afterwards.

Upon discovering the Tumblr page @aclu , I was moved by the earnest actions from students across America, turning to this page for answers on how to turn their intentions for change into progressive action. Questions such as “Will my university give me an automatic zero for missing class during the walkout?”, “How can I organize at walkout at my own school?” and the most heartfelt one “How can I do more?”, demonstrated a swelling movement of change amongst the youngest generation, taking real actions towards bettering the state of their country. In a time when students their age have been labelled as lazy, disengaged with social change and morally fatigued due to the nature of contemporary media bombarding viewers with a new tragedy everyday - this page and the movement it supports, is a sliver of hope amongst the discourse on gun control.

This Big Boy is a Brahma, the largest breed of chicken. They’re also one of the gentlest and tamest chickens out there, a bit like the Great Danes of poultry. He lives in Kosovo with his (very proud) owner Fitim Sejfija, and two hens, where he is a good and gentle man and very loved.

Brhamas typically don’t get quite this big (He’s 16.5 lbs and almost 3 feet tall. most are closer to 14 lbs and 2′6″) but they’re really nice and cuddly birds.
