Before the availability of the tape recorder and during the 1950s, when vinyl was scarce, people in the Soviet Union began making records of banned Western music on discarded x-rays. With the help of a special device, banned bootlegged jazz and rock ‘n’ roll records were “pressed” on thick radiographs salvaged from hospital waste bins and then cut into discs of 23-25 centimeters in diameter.

…Human beings who have been delivered to history and accept being determined by history become one-dimensional, muted creatures who have an ever-diminishing moral and aesthetic sense and thus a diminished sense of the possibilities of history itself. Above all, they lose their sense of both natural beauty and the beauty of other human faces, and with this lose of aesthetic judgment and a lack of recognition of the worth of others they lose the capacity for moral judgment as well. Above all, they lose all sense of justice.

Find all the best patches here, and read more about the phenomenon in this Washington Post article by Christopher Ingraham.
