5 Easy Steps To Improve Your Art (For Beginners)
Iâve struggled to make my art âlook goodâ for the longest time.
But I just couldnât match the quality of those artists that I look up to.
However, within the span of 2 years, I leveled up my art from this:
To this:
The question becomes: âHow can I improve in such a short amount of time?â
Iâll show you my improvement process in 5 steps right now:
 â
STEP 1: FIND YOUR FAVORITE MEDIUM
Not everybody works the same. Some people prefer traditional art, others prefer digital. Find what works for you and stick with it
Personally, Iâve been using Clip Studio Paint on the iPad Pro, with the Apple Pencil, and honestly Iâm not changing art programs anytime soon.
 â
STEP 2: COPY, DONâT TRACE! (No, wait, donât go! Trust me!)
Iâm not saying plagiarize. Iâm not saying trace. Iâm not saying copy other peopleâs styles exactly down to even where the hair is placed or the hands are posed. Iâm saying what LITERALLY everybody in the art tutorial community has said at one point or another: Take inspiration from someone elseâs work. Use it as a guide to learn the techniques and create your own style.
AND ABOVE ALL, DO NOT POST ANY TRACED ARTWORK THAT YOUâRE USING AND CLAIM IT AS YOUR OWN. THIS IS JUST FOR PRACTICE!
For example: Say you like how Artist A draws their eyes, and you want to know how itâs done.
Import the art into your art program, go in and break down how they draw the art.Â
What the form is like? Where do they place the shine or the shadow or the lashes?
(Anime reference is NOT my own. Apparently the character is from Girls Und Panzer but I do not know the original artist or original poster. Please let me know who the OP is or the link to the original. Thanks!!)
Great! Now do that a hundred times. Get it into your muscle memory, and once you do that, start to add your own little flavors. Maybe put in less shine. Maybe make the shape less round, or more round.
At NO POINT did I say to use the exact copy in your own work. Do not post other peopleâs work, even if itâs just copying the eyes or the head or hand shapes. What you are doing is learning the basics, learning the drawing techniques, learning how the talented peopleâs brains work, thus giving you more to work with.
(Not perfect, but certainly better than what I would have done without learning the basics first)
â
STEP 3: WATCH ALLÂ THE TUTORIALS!
This ties in with step 2. There are hundreds of hours of video tutorial content on the internet, from step-by-step guides to speedpaints to animations or gifs. The entirety of YouTube is at your disposal, so make the most of it and learn from the people who clearly know what theyâre doing.
Slow down speedpaints so that you can see what someoneâs process looks like. Go back and rewatch step-by-step tutorials until you can recite the steps by heart. Draw alongside someoneâs video so that you can clearly see what theyâre trying to teach you.
Learning from videos honestly gave me a bunch of little tips and tricks that I was able to integrate into my own workflow, and made me level up my skills super fast.
 â
STEP 4: SHARE YOUR PROGRESS ONLINE!
Thereâs nothing that lights a fire under your creative spirit than to post your content online and seeing the progression of your skills as you go!
Thereâs nowhere to go except UP in terms of improvement.
Wherever you decide to share your progress, itâs a great practice to go back every now and then and see how far youâve come since a few years ago, since a few months ago, or even since last week!
 â
STEP 5: ASK FOR CRITICAL FEEDBACK!
Donât forget to ask for feedback!
Donât start spitting fire at those that disagree with your art choices.
Look for the things that people tell you, and learn from the advice.
Make those changes, see how you like it, and you might surprise yourself down the road.
â
Letâs review:
- Step 1: Find what type of art you like to create, and go for it!
- Step 2: Copy, Donât Trace!
- Step 3: Watch All The Tutorials
- Step 4: Share Your Progress Online
- Step 5: Ask for Critical Feedback
 â
This is by no means the ultimate guide to improving your art. Rather, this is a testament to the fact that improvement does happen, but it just takes longer than you think it will.
 â

My Arcana art journey.
Very old photo is the traditional one, the newest is labeled July 1. The pics below are the pictures drawn after June 22 in that order lmao.
+that one YT video lol.
Very very splendid improvement I think for like 2-3 weeks of playing it lol.
Guess who's in a new fandom, cause she's fandom trashhhhh???? You right. It me.
This video took roughly 2 days to make with virtually no sleep, and honestly? I'm pretty proud of it, though my health status would say otherwise lol. Over 8 hours of editing and 16+ hours drawing and figuring out how to rig my OC lmao. Very fun times. Everything besides the music and background belong to me (yes, I also had to make the gameplay features)!
I also know there's a bunch of typos and grammatical errors, but when you're losing sleep while doing a project, you dont really care that much lmao.
Leave a comment, like, reblog, watch it on YouTube.... but let's not forget!

but why is reposting BAD?
i thought iâd make an faq filled with every excuse in the book about reposting, for those who still donât understand why itâs badâŚor for people who donât know what to say in retaliation to these! so here we go.Â
first of all, an artist doesnât even NEED to explain themselves. in the same way with someone who says âdude, make sure that soda is dietâ or âplease donât tickle meâ. they donât want you to do it. you donât need to test them by ignoring them. the reason doesnât matter: itâs the personâs wish with THEIR things. if you had any respect for others, youâd just take it at that.Â
BUT for some people, they donât want to respect others at face value, and want their reason. (which, i might add, is rude.) so letâs get into that:Â
but iâm giving you exposure! isnât that good?
no.Â
youâre not giving artists exposure. for people like myself, freelance artists, youâre hurting us. about a year ago, i sent my portfolio off to an indie game. in it, i had a piece of work that had been reposted (that i didnât even know about). i was told much later that they âlooked into itâ and saw that my work was posted by someone else, which means now they have no idea who the artist was, and THEREFORE canât be sure my work was legit. i lost a potential job to a repost.Â
doesnât matter if you say âi didnât draw thisâ. sometimes, they donât even look. they just look to see if itâs on any site other than your own. and thatâs terrifying for artists. so donât endanger our livelihood for instagram likes.Â
besides, youâre not even giving exposure if you didnât credit, cropped out the signature, or somehow made the resolution so low to where you canât even see the signature. which brings me toâŚ
but i credited you!
some people still donât want it reposted even with credit. the last answer should show you one of the many reasons why.Â
youâre dictating what i can/cannot put on my page! this is MY page!
and itâs MY art you posted. you canât take something i did and do whatever you want with it. imagine if you took someones drawing, photocopied it, and spread it all around the town without their permission. theyâd have every right to be angry, right?
but you posted it online, which means anyone can do anything with it. so if you donât want it reposted, donât post it online!
i have to post my art onto my websites to build a fanbase, something crucial to an artist. it shouldnât be on ME to not post it in the first place, it should be on YOU to not repost it. youâre just echoing victim-blaming arguments.Â
youâre basically saying âif you donât want to be bullied, donât exist.â which is a terrible thing to teach people, rather than âbe nice and respectful towards others.â yes, i know our world isnât perfect. but thatâs no excuse to contribute to vile things.Â
well i would be honored if someone reposted my art. and my friend doesnât mind reposts, so why should you?
good for you! good for them! but did you know thereâs more people in the world other than just you and your friend? we have wishes and feelings too, so you donât get to project your own emotions onto what WE should be feeling as well. i love peaches. some people donât like them. that doesnât mean that now they have to eat peaches because i donât mind them.Â
what an artist creates automatically belongs to society, though.Â
go steal the mona lisa and tell me how that works out.Â
everyone can VIEW it, yes. artists want others to view their work! we just donât want you to do stuff with it we asked you not to do.Â
WELL THEN SPEAKING OF THAT, since i canât put your work on redbubble and sell it for myself, why do you have an umbrella of the starry night?? huh?? you STOLE van goghâs work! (yes people have legit said this to me)Â
putting my work on items and selling it is totally illegal. van goghâs work is owned by companies now, who have authorization to print it on things. and iâm just ONE freelance artist who is, you know, still alive and not giving permission to do that. you canât compare a dead artist from the 1800s to a digital artist in 2017. apples to oranges, my dude.
well i SAID âcredit to the artistâ so i DID give you credit!
because saying âthe artistâ really tells people who i am and lets them visit my websites! thank you so much!Â
but all sarcasm aside, that doesnât do anything other than show you were too lazy to find the artist. same thing with âsource: the internetâ and âwho drew this xDâ or misspelling my url on purpose or putting the credit under a cut. OR cropping the image to cut off my signature! you didnât give me credit.Â
it wasnât on the website i wanted it on! you should have more social media.
iâll have the social media i want to have. not up to me to make more accounts on more things just so you wonât disrespect me.Â
but i donât remember where i got it. besides, i reposted SOOO much work and saved it all a long time ago. how can i find it now?
reverse google image search is so great.
also, if you didnât know the artist, thatâs a HUGE reason not to repost it in the first place!! you didnât even know if it was okay since you never got to see their position on that!!
take down your video with stolen fan art. take down your entire fan art twitter account. i donât care âhow hard it was to save those imagesâ or âhow many views you have nowâ. you got all that attention from someone elseâs hard work. searching for art will never be as hard as making it. if it were that easy, youâd be drawing all the art yourself.Â
but i asked the artist and they didnât say anything! i assumed it was okay.Â
yeah, i feel you. itâs the same thing as when you ask your mom if you can borrow some money, she doesnât answer, so you just steal it from her purse. no answer means the answer you want to hear, right?
wrong. donât take âunresponsiveâ as a yes. thatâs disgusting.Â
well i honestly donât care. artists are just selfish. iâll repost their art if i want to, just to show them how much i hate their stance on reposting. and (insert another really edgy statement here from someone who only says things to get a rise out of people since their life is empty)Â
one day youâre gonna come across an artist who has no chill and wants to sue, and can actually do it, since some people put their work under HEAVY copyright. and iâm gonna kick back in my chair with a nice capri sun and watch it all happen, since you have that kind of attitude towards people.Â
yes, this whole thing seems a bit. well. âsaltyâ, as some would put it. and i have every right to be irritated over this. all these questions are asking âWHY should i respect their wishes? give me a reasonâ or âbut here is my excuse rather than just taking it downâ. time after time, artists are villainized just for telling people not to repost.Â
like i said, the artist not wanting you to repost it SHOULD be reason enough! weâre so tired of having to fight people just to have respect for our art. we have to deal with tracing constantly, so can you please take reposting off our plates? i know bad things will always happen, but thatâs no reason to make it worse by contributing.Â
artists are generously putting our art out there for free. if you want to keep seeing our art for free (btw we donât HAVE to, all the big artists could just up and leave and go to patreon), maybe show us some respect? because we get pretty dejected when we see strangers getting attention from something we did, and it makes us want to remove everything we show you guys. you say âdonât post it then!â but would be mad if all fan art disappeared.Â
if you want to keep the art, respect the artist making it. thereâs a real person behind that drawing.Â
Parents always complain how ungrateful us kids are, but you know, weâre so grateful for you that it leaves us speechless. We try our best to return the favour, to please you and make you proud. What hurts us the most is that you donât notice our endeavours for your sake. You relentlessly belittle us, telling us weâre doing it wrong. The fact is, youâre the ones who are ungrateful⌠but do we say anything? No. Iâm proud to have you as my parents, but not once have I felt any acknowledgement of pride from you. I have not once heard âI am proud of youâ. Ever.
The Problems with Having Filipino Parents when they're Angry with You
See, this is one of those things that I know Iâm going to be incredibly biased about because, well, we are all aware that we donât fully understand any other culture as well as we would like to claim we do. Anyway, I just got a random scolding from my mom for not telling her something that really, to me, wasnât that big of an issue. (Maybe, Iâm also being a brat about this, and my opinion will most likely change in the future, but for now, IT REALLY WASNâT THAT BIG OF A DEAL) So here we are, i, writing about what my problems are about having Filipino parents, and you, probably agreeing to most of them (if you are, in fact, Filipino too.)
1. They constantly contradict themselves, specially during an argument.
Now, before you say anything, I have never actually had an argument with my parents. When I say argument, I really just mean a full on 3 hour long scolding. See, when my parents scold me, they do so in a calm manner (at least they start off that way. Towards the middle, it kind of escalates to âIâm shouting but itâs my inside-voice-shouting. Thatâs when I know the decline is about to come and weâve reached the half-way point.) And I say they contradict themselves not because of the values and lessons that theyâre trying to instill in me contradict, but because my mom/dad, throughout the scenario, would start off by saying, "you shouldâve said something; told us we were doing something wrong. You really shouldâve mentioned something earlier.â and so on. This would last for about a third of the process and then theyâd keep quiet, like they were waiting for a reply from me. But as soon as I breathe in, (here it comes..) they start the yelling part of my scolding. Yes, I do believe that itâs a trigger. and yes, they do start yelling because they instantly assume that what I was about to say was me answering back (aggressively or something along the lines of being disrespectful), and at that point, they tell me, âDonât you dare say anything.â Thatâs when I am left confused and well, quiet.Â
*Notice that I never used the word conversation? thatâs because a conversation requires an actual verbal interaction between people. That never occurs when my parents are reprimanding me.
2. They bring up things that youâve done wrong way back when you were still inside your mommaâs womb.
This is why said scenario takes at least 2 hours long. My parents especially love the part where they can drive a conversation to every fucking possible direction. Mind you, everything that I have done wrong, I have had my 2 hour share of agony, but still in every new situation, they never fail to mention the last 500 things Iâve done wrong. (Including washing the dishes, cleaning up my room and/or texting them whether the Tennis player they were rooting for lost or won the game.) For example, a few minutes ago, my mom was talking to me about how I handle my finances, then all of a sudden sheâs listing up the fact that I was up all night last night and that I didnât wash the dishes this morning. How am I supposed to keep up with this? How is anyone supposed to keep up with anything at this point?
3. They always tell you to grow up and be responsible, but they donât actually want you to make your own decisions.
For this one, I do admit that most of the time, I do know where my parents are coming from ;and theyâre very understanding of what I need and feel regarding being an adult. However, I also cannot deny that they never fail to grind my bones when they tell me I need to grow up, then the next thing I know, they treat me like a child. In all honesty, I just wish that there was manual to all of this, because I feel so lost at this point.
*I feel lost because I have this made up idea in my head of what my life should be like at 20, but right now itâs nothing like it. Also, I have friends younger that me, that have done more with their lives at 18 than I have ever done at 20.
4. They love to repeat themselves.
My parents LOVE to do this. They think that by saying the same thing over and over again throughout the 2 hours, itâs going to have a different affect on me. Also, they donât just repeat the same exact sentences over and over, my parents are more creative. They like to rearrange the words in the sentence and use it in different contexts. I mean, I pretty much get what theyâre saying the first time they say it to me. But they just love to always repeat everything that theyâve said the first 30 mins, every 30 mins.
5. You can never live your mistakes down.
Everything that youâve done wrong in your life under their roof will always be remembered forever. Itâs the truth.
6. You get annoyed with themâ angry even. But you will always love and respect them no matter what.
You know itâs true.
Personal question for Pride Month đłď¸âđ
I wanna elaborate on this post so that there's no misunderstanding. This in no way is hateful toward the LGBTQ+ community. I do not hate any one from the community and I fully support the whole thing. I am an ally of the LGBTQ+ community, and as an ally I'm a cisgender heterosexual from a Democratic state.
Now, I know this scenario doesn't apply to the whole community of LGBTQ+ community, but it seems to be a common occurance when I talk to my friends who are part of it. I love my friends and love who they are and I mean no ill intent towards them but sometimes they say things to me that kinda make me uncomfortable. All I'm looking for is some clarity or if thiss kind of behavior is normal....?
What I'm referring to is that some of my friends who are part of the communtiy tend to degrade cisgender heterosexuals in the name of gender equality? They would often say that being straight should be illegal and that I should be put in jail cause "screw breeders" or get really offended when there would be a derogatory term tossed around or what would even seem like a derogatory term....? A recent example of this would be that I had a friend who was gay openly talking about drag and drag queens and how much he loved the idea and concept but got shut down but another friend who's also in the community by telling him that thats a slur towards the LGBTQ+ community, saying its like a type of hate speech and so forth. Ever since then I've been watching what I say because I'm scared that I'll make them mad along with all the hate and insult towards cisgender heterosexuals.
Sometimes they would go out of their way to insult my sexual identity and orientation even though I'm an ally of the community. Listen, I'm all for making the world more gay and the like, but I just feel kinda discourage that I'm being treated like this, when I haven't done anything necessarily wrong...? They would sometimes force their sexuality onto me and my other straight friends and it can become uncomfortable sometimes, when we dont force our orientation or sexuality on them (all my straight friends are also allies so it's kinda like a huge support circle, just to clarify so there's not any awkward tensions within the group).
I'm not asking for people to make a Straight Pride or anything, I just want clarity or a response because I know this doesn't represent the whole community, and the friends who are a part of it and don't give out any insults assured me that my friends who do are probably just joking.
Thanks for listening to my concern! Sorry if I ruined your day in anyway! Have a fun month and celebrate who you are!!!
