Fun sized and Feral AU part 2.
I am honestly just writing to get these out of my head and was not actually expecting my post to get attention. Thank you?!
this AU keeps getting away from me. this one is long Y'all.
Fun sized and Feral - A World Unseen.
Have you ever just had a moment where the world just decides to hit you over the head with some new fact you never bother to pay attention to?
Gothamites were stubborn, ok? they had to be. Life in Gotham never stopped pushing, and if you stuck around, most people had two options.
One, you let Gotham push you over and get buried. Or two you plant your feet and push back.
A few people in Gotham had a third option. Screw sanity, take life by the fucking throat and demand Gotham get out of your way.
This option however was mainly restricted to the Vigilante/Villain population.
Apparently the Fentons didn't get the memo.
Gotham was no stranger to quirky people and weird coping habits. Especially on the less legal side of things.
(So long as you did your job, what you had to do to get it done is your own business)
Most people learn to see, shrug, and move the hell on. The thing was the Fentons weren't from Gotham. (Make no mistake they were THEIRS now. They had claimed them and apparently even the fucking Joker wasn't going to change that)
The Fentons were from Amity. It was "a nice place to live". A little town in Illinois that had cringy ghost themed attractions and a near negative crime rate.
How in the hell did a family as nice as the Fentons from a town as peaceful as Amity look at Gotham and go "This seems good, I'm gonna live here now".
They had brushed off the quirks as "non-Gotham" behavior, thanked what ever half-baked deity tricked them into coming here, and did their best to look after the small bit of peace the family and store brought with them.
After the feral incident the regulars at Dead End Cafe had started to keep a little closer tabs on the little "quirks" the family had.
It was ... jarring honesty. Many of them simultaneously felt closer to them knowing more about them (how well they really fit into Gotham's underbelly) and farther away seeing all the things they missed.
They were still the funny, overly caring family that had barreled their way through Crime Ally's walls a year and a half ago. They didn't even hide the odd things they did. If you asked and they were willing to answer, they did it truthfully. (This actually led to more questions than answers)
People had just... never paid attention to it. but now, now they couldn't un-see it.
A few groups began to compile list of the facts they knew. (They were curious, how did they fit in so well, why? Did their family need to hide somewhere no one would look? Did they need help?)
Tucker was built like a tank. He moved like someone who had a history of trained fighting despite saying he never did sports or martial arts.
He was a wiz with any kind of tech. Helped anyone with issues for free, often leaving it better then when they first got it.
He was designing a video game apparently. Many of them were exception a new shooter but were surprised when he said it was a horror RPG based in Ancient Egypt. Apparently, he had old family roots there.
(They looked the other way when his Hieroglyph tattoos seemed to move, or the way the sand that was always there followed him.)
Bill (one of Penguin’s) had seen him throw a handful of darts one day and hit the bullseye with all of them. Bill asked Tucker where he learned. Tucker had laughed before replying " we found out when Sam got kidnapped once. Apparently, I have great aim with just about just anything thrown or shot. If I had hit my growth spurt before senior, I may have had a chance on a school team.
Bill had followed up by asking about who kidnapped Sam and if they should keep an eye out. The answer was no, because, he quotes "honestly by the time Danny and I got there to help, she had already staged a revolt with the guy's sister, and they over threw him together". (Sam then helped her take over the "family business"? Bill shook his head. Honestly, good on her.)
Sam was honestly the most intimidating of the Fentons. While the respect/fear for Ma Fenton had definitely gone up. Sam was still more likely to get into a fight.
5'11" before adding the heeled combat boots Sam struck a pretty intimidating figure. (The fact that she had sent the three guys who tried to mug her to the hospital definitely added to this.)
Despite her looks, she always seemed to have a group of children she was teaching. If Tucker was the go-to for technical and planning advice, Sam was the one for all things green and health related.
She was constantly teaching the children about what plants could be used for aches and pains and which were easiest to grow.
As time went on, she began to bring back bundles of herbs to show how to make "special brews". (There were few people that had enough trust to get a Gothamite to try a "homemade remedy", but after the first few said they did actually feel better it became pretty common to order a "special brew" in the cold season)
It had been a shock when after a lesson, someone had asked "why they couldn't go in the back of the green house" and "why do you draw funny drawings on your pots?".
"The plants in the back are highly poisonous". Sam had replied. Face completely serious. "I am immune, you are not. Please do not go back there without me". She picked up her stuff before adding "the symbols keep bad things away". She then left to the kitchen leaving a group of wide-eyed children (and listening adults) in her wake.
(It was later confirmed that the symbols were actually wards against evil intent, a few of them having worked with magic users in the past. Everyone pointedly ignored how the plants on the walls would occasionally turn to face Sam like the sun.)
Ellie was the least changed. She was still the snarky, happy child that they had come to know and love. The only thing was the comments.
Originally, when they found something odd, they would ask Ellie. It was more for fun then anything. Ask a random question, get a made-up kid's answer. After the incident they were no longer sure how "made-up" some of the answers were.
Like the pin board.
It was a cute thing at first. A little pin board near the door that had "Square up or square down" along the top.
There was an assortment of square pins below it with random words (in sparkly gel pen) that made a list. For the longest time, no one could figure out what they meant. The pins on the board stayed the same, changing order about once a week.
Whenever a word went to the top, a second pin would be added beside it with the word "souped" on it. (Sometimes, two or three words would have this, always at the top)
This board remained a Fenton mystery until shortly after the incident. When a new square sitting right at the top in glittery green read "Joker". (The board now seemed a lot less cute, knowing that the pins like "Boxy" and "Skulker" were not words but names)
After the third time Jokers name had been moved to the top (and that was a nightmare on its own) Jason Peters (stinky man according to Ellie) had bravely (stupidly) asked her why Joker never got the "souped" pin when he moved up.
Ellie had taken a look at the board before saying, "He still has all his bones." Jason (and a good everyone else around them) had stared at the girl for a moment. "Could you explain that one to me, please Bity?" Jason asked, not really sounding like he wanted an answer.
Ellie had huff before putting down her drawing and facing the man. "He has all him bones," she repeated. "The other ones lost their bones, so Mama made them soup." The man looked like he regretted life as the kid continued. "He can't be soup. You need to give your bones to be soup." Ellie held Jason's gaze until he nodded to her. The kid took that as he understood before going back to her coloring. (No one had the guts to ask the older Fentons for clarification)
Ma Fenton was definitely the hardest to readjust to. He was still sweet, still gave off a calm feeling, still made them good food. (He knew their favorites. he smiled at them like people.)
It was mostly little things. Like how he didn't have trouble picking up things that really should be too heavy. How He moved without making sound. He always knew your name. (Even if you don't remember giving it)
The hardest part was trying to figure out what set him off. No one wanted to pick a fight with Ma. It felt wrong to attack someone so nice to them. (He was terrifying when mad.)
Danny just seemed to flip on a dime. The second he knew Joker (or any others on the board) was within a few blocks of Dead End. (And he always knew.)
He would suddenly tense, get a smile on this face that didn't look quite right (too wide, too cold). He would excuse himself, call Tucker or Sam to take over, before grabbing a kitchen utensil (it was mostly the pan, but sometimes a rolling pin, it had only been a steak knife once.) Before moving the Joker pin to the top of the board on the way out the door before doing a dead sprint in a random direction.
No one had figured out how he always knew where the Joker was, but batman should take notes.
They had been walking on eggshells for a bit before Alvin Peter (Jason's younger brother) had asked Tucker why Danny reacted so bad to the Joker.
The guy apparently wanted to meet Ma after seeing him throw down with Joker in the bank. It had been the first Ma vs. Joker fight to happen off Fenton territory and the only one ever caught on film.
Red Hood and Red Robin had been there, but after the SHRIEK™ had been heard, Red Hood had all but hauled Red Robin out of the way and waited till it was over. (It had been the same level of feral as the first. Fists and teeth before Ma had grabbed Red Robin's bo staff and had used it like a bat, then made his escape through the vent.)
Tucker told them they had nothing to worry about.
"Death leaves a mark, whether you cause it or are just around it, it clings to us." Tucker had said it so nonchalantly, like he had long since come to terms with it. "Fentons know death a bit differently than most. We see it frequently. It stopped bothering us a long time ago. We don't judge. It is part of life, a balance. " Tucker's faces had been uncomfortably blank.
"Joker has no balance. He should have died a long time ago. He was brought back and now takes more than was his to take." Tucker turned back to Alvin, ignoring the pale faces around him.
"It makes Danny angry. The unbalance. It is very, very hard for a human to reach that level of death. There often isn't anything left of the human by then."
Tucker then pat Alvin on the shoulder, smile coming back like normal. " I can promise you no one who comes here can match the Joker in unbalance. the only way you are making the list is if you ask to be on it like the others."
That conversation had been as unsettling as it was oddly comforting.
As the two-year mark for Dead End Cafe arrived, Crime Ally had once again settled around the Fentons.
They were still quirky, still nice. If they occasionally did things that were a bit intimidating, well, fewer people would want to bother them, right?
Everyone at this point had begrudgingly accepted that there was no stopping Ma Fenton from throwing down with the Joker. (The area that the fights were happening in was slowly expanding past "Fenton territory," bets were being made on where the next ones would be.)
Somehow most of the Bats had not figured out where the Fentons were yet. apparently, video had a hard time picking up Fentons and so far, both Red Hood and Red Robin looked the other way when they heard the SHRIEK™.
It was good. Their small bit of peace was still intact (if a bit more feral), the bat was still chasing circles. (Crime Ally did their best to help with that, as previously stated the Fentons were THEIRS). All in all, things were back to how they used to be.
At least until the Fenton In-laws showed up to visit.
I will probably do the Fentons senior (and jazz) visit and possibly one from Ellie's poi t of view because girl needs more screen time and I want to mess with Jason.
After that it will probably just be so snips of shit the Fentons have pulled In gotham xD
I can't remember who, but someone had asked if danny is Mama and sam is Papa. Who is Tucker? Tucker is dad/daddy. Depends on the day.
Thank you so much for reading!
