with lucille propped up against his shoulder, he gave a long sigh. “fucking seattle” he muttered to himself. without the army, without simon or dwight to boss around and definitely without his wives had made negan a little stir crazy. so here he was, taking a stroll to see what the city offered him. or to see how long it would take for someone to call the police about the barbed bat he was carrying. either way, at least he wouldn’t be so fucking bored anymore. with the day drawing to a close, he spotted a diner across the street. deciding he could murder a coffee, he entered and walked up to the counter. “coffee please, black. but like, 5 sugars”
waylon’s immediately ready to haul ass out of the diner the minute he spots such an unwelcoming sight. he doesn’t take chances with people anymore, not after mount massive. unfortunately, he’s starved and already ordered his food; walking out now would do nothing but screw over his waitress and she’d already been so kind to him. doesn’t mean he can’t switch seats though, move from the bar stool closest to the man to an empty booth near the back. the only issue?? that baseball bat is sort of in the way. he clears his throat, ignoring the swell of pain in his knee as his anxiety rises, before he speaks up, ‘ sorry. excuse me. i need to get past. your -- bat is in the way. ’

the moment he says his name and explains himself, miles feels a rush of pure rage go through him. this was the person who had gotten him caught up in the mess, the reason that miles was currently in the state he was in. and adding on the bit about the jeep was like a kick in the gut.
it take everything in him not to punch the guy because clearly he’s nervous and that brings a whole set of new questions for miles. plus, being angry would just further agitate the walrider that seemed to be twisting just underneath his skin and he didn’t want to deal with the consequences of losing control now.
miles is slow and deliberate as he shuts off his camera and tucks it into his pocket, taking a moment to appraise the other before speaking, ignoring the dark mist that seems to trail from his fingers when he moves his hands. “i had a guy cut my fingers off with a rusty pair of scissors, i was shot by a SWAT team, i nearly had my head ripped off by some fucked up guy in there and i’m currently only alive because an evil demon decided to use me as a host.” the words are calm but there’s a fury behind them. “where the hell is my jeep?” because if anything good is going to come from this, it would be him getting his beloved vehicle back.
waylon thinks he would have preferred violence to this silent rage, but the way he flinches as miles goes through his own trauma like a bulleted list might be the next best thing. it’s selfish, perhaps, but waylon is devastated. he had never fooled himself in thinking miles had gotten out of there easier than he himself had, but to hear the damage that waylon had caused indirectly -- it’s almost too much. he’d hurt so many people in his deluded quest to just do the right thing. was it even worth it now??
' the walrider -- that was you. when it, ' he clears his throat, pushes aside the images of the black mist ripping jeremy blair to pieces right in front of him, ' when i escaped, i saw you coming out of the building, but i -- i didn’t know. ’ that’s what it comes down to, however weak it sounds falling from frightened lips, ‘ i was trying to do something good. the things they did to the patients -- it was horrible. you know, don’t you?? i had no idea what was going to happen after i sent that. ’
he feels the sharp ache shooting up his leg the more this conversation unfolds. it’s a psychosomatic pain most likely, flaring up only when he’s anxious, on the verge of panic, stuck in memories of running from eddie’s fatal attraction. it doesn’t make it hurt any less, especially when waylon purses his lips and sheepishly adds, ‘ i don’t have your jeep anymore. i -- i left it at billy hope’s old town. murkoff probably has it by now. ’ he’d been trying to get away, unwilling to lead any traces back to his family even despite the desperation to simply go straight home, ‘ i’m sorry. i’m so sorry. ’

“I– I last saw him back home before I woke up here. But I don’t even know how I’m here or why. I can’t call him… What if I’m… what if he’s not safe?”
‘ i know it might not be much consolation, but you aren’t alone. i don’t really know how i ended up here either. ’ he can’t help her with the contact thing, unfortunately. in his own effort to keep his family safe, he’s cut off as much contact as possible anyway. ‘ does he have anyone else with him, maybe?? another guardian?? ’

“Um… um, excuse me…” Jane tried to keep the tears from her eyes, but she was panicked, “Have you– have you seen a little boy. He’s six and– and he has short cropped blonde hair. He’s missing some of his teeth. His name’s Ziggy and he’s about this tall.”
concern graces his features as he shakes his head. he understands the fear that grips someone when they’ve lost their child all too well and it leaves him quick to help. ' i haven’t, i’m sorry. i’ll help you look. where do you think you were separated?? ’

it was strange, after everything that had happened most people would assume that miles’ first instinct would be to toss out his camera and never even go near journalism or danger again but here he was, walking the trails and enjoying the semi-decent weather with his camera still held out in front of him. it wasn’t for a story, though he was sure the footage would make good b-roll if he ever needed it. if anything the camera seemed to serve as a shield and he would bet money that if he ever decided to see a psychologist they would tell him that he used his camera as a way to distance himself from the real world. like if he didn’t fully acknowledge everything than nothing bad could happen. which also wasn’t completely true because if he let himself think about it, he could feel the walrider and if he wasn’t careful and he lost control than the thing would cause chaos. so really, there was no shield miles could possibly use. he had to face life and his camera and his job and the dangers that came with it made it all more bearable. at least that gave him something else to think about from time to time.
when he comes across the stranger on the path, miles can’t help but be taken off guard with the reaction he gets. his first assumption is that the other has seen his scars and is afraid - it’s happened before- but then the words register and suddenly he’s narrowing his eyes and maybe this person isn’t a stranger after all. there’s something vaguely familiar about him and the itching just underneath his skin makes it seem like the walrider knows this person somehow ( or maybe it just wants out, miles really doesn’t know ).
“alright, i’m going to need you to take a deep breath.” he’s still trying to figure out who this person is and the rambling certainly isn’t helping. “i’d love to accept the apology but it would mean so much more if i knew what your name was.” usually, he’d probably try and go for a reassuring pat on the arm but he has a feeling that the gesture wouldn’t be appreciated in this situation.
waylon was timid, but he had always been honest. it’s what had landed him in the mess at mount massive to begin with really. now, however, he feels sick with the truth, especially when he realizes he was correct: miles doesn’t know who he is, nor should he have any reason to. waylon could walk away, stammer out another apology about mistaking miles for someone else, and be done with it.
he could, but he wouldn’t. of course he wouldn’t. how fucked would that be?? the very notion brings a weak laugh from between chapped lips. god, he must seem ridiculous right now. he just -- he doesn’t know what to say. nothing he can say is going to change what miles had surely gone through in that hellhole.
besides, no matter how willing waylon is to push past his panic and bare his truth, he still finds himself clamming up when miles pushes for his name. his tongue feels like lead; when he opens his mouth to speak this time, his words are slow and stunted, forced -- nothing like his rambling from earlier.
‘ my name -- it’s waylon. ’ his breathing is labored, despite miles’ earlier prompting, and waylon twists and tugs at his wedding band to try and ground himself. it works, but only as a means of resignation, ‘ waylon park. the email about murkoff....about mount massive. it was me. i sent it. ’ and then, because it seems as if the filter between his brain and mouth is all but severed now, he finds himself adding, ‘ i took your jeep. ’
( @vivalamutants ) | starter call.
‘ could I sit here?? all the other tables are full. ’ normally waylon would have just left; he’s not so concerned with his lack of social interaction these days and his home is just a good of place to finish his coffee as any. today’s not a -- bad day though. he’ll enjoy it while he can, which is why he sucked it up and asked the guy with the only other seat available. ‘ if you’re waiting for someone, that’s alright. i’m not trying to be a bother. ’

This is not California. Madeline was suddenly in a new place and just a few moments earlier she was in her home with her husband and kids.Panic came over her as she realized they weren’t with her. This wasn’t happening. She started scanning the area around her looking for someone familiar but everyone seemed strangers. ‘’Excuse me! W-where are we?’’ The blonde probably sounded crazy.
no one else was answering. waylon supposes he’s not obligated either, but she seems so stressed. he understands how downright unnerving it can be to stuck somewhere with so little knowledge, after all. ‘ uh, it’s seattle, washington. ’
