I don't know you And you don't know the half of it I had a starring role I was the bad guy who walked out They say be careful where you aim 'Cause where you aim you just might hit You can hold on to something so tight You've already lost it
Dragging me down That's not the way it used to be You can't even remember What I'm trying to forget ...
Remember in Back to the Future when the people in the photograph were vanishing because history had been altered and they didn't exist? Raised on rock and roll, I can't imagine my life without Chuck Berry in the picture.
Since I was 8 years old at the time, I reckon Back to the Future was my peak early exposure to Chuck Berry. I'm pretty sure we bought both the movie soundtrack and the then-new Great Twenty-eight cassettes concurrently.
Later, I heard "Anthony Boy" and instantly identified with my namesake’s shy boy all ablush.
We all loved the Beatles and Stones and their covers. And oh how many Grateful Dead sets opened and/or closed with "Around & Around", "Promised Land", and "Johnny B. Goode".
To me, Chuck Berry is rock and roll. Rock and roll can never die. Long Live Chuck Berry.
A dusty treasure from my collection, on the sad occasion of his passing. Chuck Berry And His Combo – Roll Over Beethoven / Drifting Heart
Label: Chess – 1626 Format: Shellac, 10", 78 RPM Released: May 1956 Chuck Berry – guitar, lead vocals Fred Below – drums Bo Diddley – guitar Willie Dixon – bass One of 50 recordings chosen in 2003 by the Library of Congress to be added to the National Recording Registry. In 2004, "Roll Over Beethoven" was ranked number 97 on Rolling Stone's list of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time". The accompanying review stated that it "became the ultimate rock & roll call to arms, declaring a new era".
To me, Chuck Berry is rock and roll. Rock and roll can never die.

Deep, dark, Dead. Stunning second set builds to this aching “China Doll” with an awesome jam through drums, and an especially lysergic space (including Jerry quoting bits of Bach), before resolving into an inspired “Wheel”. Dig the “Deal” to close the first set, too. One of the better performances of 1984. Also of note: this was the first run with an official taper’s section.
