Stick Doggedly

“For it is great to give up one’s wish, but it is greater to keep a firm grip on it after having given it up; it is great to lay hold of the eternal, but it is greater to stick doggedly to the temporal after having given it up.” - Johannes De Silentio, Fear and Trembling p. 15, Walsh translation. What in the temporal are we permitted to have such an attitude toward? Whatever our heart desires? No. Whatever is promised? What temporality are we stick doggedly to? Temporality as such? “But Abraham believed and believed for this life. To be sure, had his faith been only for a future life, he could indeed more easily have cast everything away in order to hurry out of the world to which he did not belong. But Abraham’s faith was not like that, if there be such a faith, for that is not really faith but only the remotest possibility of faith” - p. 17.

The ears of the troubled are formed in a special way, and just as the lover's ears may well hear many voices but nevertheless really only one, namely the voice of the beloved, so the ears of the troubled may well hear many voices, but they pass by and do not penetrate his heart. Just as faith and hope without love are but sounding brass and a tinkling cymbal, so all the joy proclaimed in the world in which sorrow is not heard along with it is but sounding brass with a tinkling cymbal that tickle the ear but are repulsive to the soul. But this voice of comfort, this voice that trembles in pain and yet proclaims joy, this is heard by the ears of the troubled one; his heart treasures it, and it strengths and guides him to find joy even in the depths of sorrow.
