First Terrace records Japan Tour

First Terrace Recordsは、2016年にAlex Ives＆Joseph Summersによって設立されたロンドンを拠点とするレーベルです。アンビエント、エクスペリメンタル、ドローン、インプロヴィゼーション、サウンドアートなどの領域を独自の審美眼によりセレクトしつつ、K. Leimerのような伝説的なアンビエントのアーティストの作品もリリースしています。ロンドンにある、Cafe otoでのインプロヴィゼーションのイベントなども開催しました。

今回 First Terrace Recordsのショーケースとして、レーベルより３組のアーティストが来日、同レーベルよりリリースのあるChihei Hatakeyamaが全ての公演で同行、国内５カ所のツアーを敢行します。

Specimens is the London based artist & producer Alex Ives. His work explores the avenues of self awareness & racial identity through the medium of cassette loops, ambient drones, distorted piano samples, saxophone and experimental frequencies. He has toured across Europe, Japan & America throughout his musical projects performing alongside artists such as Machinefabriek, Midori Hirano, Chihei Hatakeyama, John Bence & more).

Alongside running First Terrace Records with Alex Ives (Specimens), “Skip” Summers is an instrument builder, performance maker and improvisor. Previous happenings include an opera for pirate radio & binoculars, a live film score for Derek Jarman’s ’The Last Of England’, a playable installation in a tree and a Berlin performance that culminated in the burial of a lamb's head.

He is preparing a new show (and new instruments) for his first visit to Japan.

Vida Vojić (aka Vida Voyage) is a Sweden-born Berlin-based sound artist. She aims to express that which is suppressed underneath - the voice, sounds and words grow into new worlds - the voyage is continuous. During her live performances, the listeners are placed on an ambient plate through which they smoothly enter growing desires, endless enigmas and forgotten senses. Through an ever expanding dream-state, this sonic cruise can be both comforting and confronting as it takes one down a path full of subtle wake-up calls, shifting perspectives and subconscious transformations. As we leave rationality behind, we return to the present flow, cherishing the moments that can be lived rather than understood.

Artist Statement:

”Unconsciously, I ended up in sound to express the invisible inside. Everything interconnected, a feeling in my chest, turned into a tone, grew into a new world. I aim for purity - what is suppressed underneath the intellect. It is a physical reaction to the confrontation of myself, removing the barriers between me and the reflection of me - the sound. The biggest loss is to forget to feel. I seek to get as close to feelings as possible, without the need of explanation in between, leaving an open end to the expression. Perhaps that is when thinking becomes irrelevant, and listening becomes something you do with your body first, and thought secondly.”

chihei hatakeyama accidentally saw their live show in tokyo. The content of their lyrics was a song that sang about the hometown of hatakeyam, so he was deeply impressed.

The musicality was low-fi fork, somewhat like velvet underground.

ya mai mo is a low-fi fork rock band by Tayuki Sakyo, who is a guitar vocalist, and Tayu Kawakubo, who is a drum, focusing on guitar vocals. Sometimes awkward, casual vocals echo between waves on tracks with mysterious weakness that are influenced by ambient and abstract hip hop. The lyrics are cynical, sometimes straight, and carefully crafted stories. It unites with the sound, and it penetrates to the heart as it brings a small NO in the era of global capitalism. The mix is ​​done by Goony on the outside, and it's an addictive sound, such as the reverb processing of the guitar sound that reminds of "Sunday Morning" on velvet underground. Mastering was done by ambient drone writer Chihei Hatakeyama.

ya mai mo OBAIHO名義でソロの弾き語り等でライブ活動をしていたニートたけし(gt/vo等)と、ルキャッツ等で活動していた佐京泰之(gt等)が2017年頃より2人でライブ活動を開始。数ヶ月後,tide等で活動していた川久保尊由(dr等)が参加して三人に増殖。ローファイフォークロック、ガレージパンク、ドローン、アンビエント、日本のアブストラクトヒップホップ、歌謡曲、J-POP 等に影響を受けながら自分達の音楽を模索している。

The first collaboration album of Stijn Hüwels and Chihei Hatakeyama has been completed. Stijn Hüwels is runing Slaapwel label in Belgian, which releases high quality ambient works. also, he is mucian forcusing minimalism by long-form pieces, using processed guitar and field recordings.

This album was recorded in during twice in 2018 European tours of chihei hatakeyama. chihei hatakeyama has used for this recodings a small Arturia analog synthesizer and an electric guitar.

Jodo means Buddhist paradise in Jaonese. In Buddhism, there is the world after death called "the Land of Happiness".

A whisper-like, fine-grained analog synth sounds like an empty can thrown away on a longing road

The tone of the analog synth with an indefinite pitch overlaps with the melodic tone of the electric guitar and fades away as it is sucked into a huge gravity or black hole.

The reverbs and delays of strymon and eventide invite guitar drone into the poetics of sorrow that is sucked into a huge mist, and it becomes a reverberation of rage.

良質なアンビエント作品をリリースするSlaapwelの主宰者で、2019年にはHome Normalより、Tomoyoshi DateやNorihito Sudaとのコラボレーションアルバムを立て続けにリリースしたStijn Hüwelsと2018年にはヨーロッパを中心にトルコなどのフェスに出演するなど 世界を彷徨するChihei Hatakeyamaの初のコラボレーションアルバムが完成した。

Jodo(浄土）と名付けられた今作はささやくように微細なアナログシンセの、掠れた道に打ち捨てられた空き缶のような音色から物語が始まる。 ピッチの定まらないアナログシンセの音色は巨大な重力に、あるいはブラックホールに吸い込まれるように、エレクトリックギターのメロコリックな音色に重なり、消えてゆく。 strymonとeventideのリヴァーブとディレイは巨大な霧に吸い込まれるような悲しみの詩学の中へギタードローンを誘い込み、怒濤の残響となって響き渡る。

Profile

Stijn Hüwels is a Belgian musician with a profound fascination for minimalism. His work is defined by long-form pieces, using processed guitar and field recordings. Next to solo work, he collaborated with Tomoyoshi Date, Norihito Suda, Danny Clay and Ian Hawgood. Together with James Murray, Hüwels is part of Silent Vigils. His music is released on Dauw, Eilean, Glass Reservoir, mAtter and Home Normal.

Chihei Hatakeyama is a sound artist , an organizer and mastering engineer who was born in 1978, and lives in the Tokyo. He has performed for years under his given name and also as one half of the electroacoustic duo Opitope, along with Tomoyoshi Date. Hatakeyama got involved in playing music through strumming a electric guitar in a few rock-oriented bands in his teenage years. Subsequently a laptop computer superseded his bands as his main platform. Hatakeyama polychromes memory-evoking soundscapes with various recorded materials of acoustic instruments such as guitars, vibraphone, and piano; mostly played by hand and processed time and time again via laptop. His first album Minima Moralia was commissioned for release by the Chicago-based label kranky in early 2006. Since then his many album was released by Room 40, Under The Spire, Hibernate Records, Magic Book Records, Home Nomal, OwnRecords, Spekk, Dronarivm, Constellation Tatsu, Glacial Movements Records and his own label White Paddy Mountain. In 2013 Hatakeyama founded the record label White Paddy Montain, which since then has released over 40 recordings by some of the most accomplished musicians and modern ambient musicians, Shoegazer and folk musicians in Japan. Recent years Hatakeyama continues to evolve his sound by analog synthesizer, modular synthesizer and compact guitar effector. Hatakeyama approaches some modular synthesizer and electric guitar drone project with an expectation of new directions.

Afterimage（残像）と題された本作はイスタンブールの骨董品屋で畠山が出会った一枚の写真から始まった。（その写真はジャケットに使われている） 母親と娘らしい二人の女性が写っている写真。撮影したのは父親、夫であろうか。この家族にどのようなストーリーがあり、いつの時代のものだろうか。 この写真に刻まれた家族の幸せの記録、そして、記憶。畠山は何故かこの写真に惹かれるものがあり、それゆえにこの写真からインスピレーションを受け、アルバムとして一つの物語を形作った。 掠れたピアノのサンプル、オーヴァードライブしつつあるエレクトリックギターの狭間で、記憶の残像が立ち表れては消え、霞の向こうに疾走する。 霧のようなコーラスモジュレーションから立ち上がるメロディツクなドローンサウンド、牧歌的なアルペジオ。 写真の中の二人の女性から受ける印象を抽象画的な色彩で描くギターアンビエントの新たな１枚が誕生した。

This album entitled Afterimage (afterimage) was composed in inspiration from a piece of photograph Hatakeyama found in Istanbul's antique store. (That is the picture used in the jacket) Between piled piano and over drive electric guitar, when the afterimage of memory disappears, it disappears and runs over the haze. A melodic drone sound and an idyllic arpeggio standing up from a chorus modulation like a blurred fog. A new piece of guitar ambient was born the impression received from the two women in the photograph.

As a part of their video series 'toco toco', Japanese content platform Archipel made a short documentary about ambient musician, sound artist, mastering engineer and record label founder Chihei Hatakeyama. Now based in Tokyo, the video follows Hatakeyama - a master in creating atmospheric, memory-evoking soundscapes -, back to his roots in the Kamakura and Enoshima areas of Japan, where he grew up. Chihei Hatakeyamaの『The Bull Head Emperor』、『Alone By The Sea』、『Requiem For Black Night And Earth Spiders』に続く、 日本の古代史シリーズの４作目。これまで、牛頭天王、補陀落渡海、土蜘蛛をテーマに取り上げて来たが、今作では隋書倭国伝がテーマとなっている。

西暦608年、隋の皇帝煬帝の使者として裴世清が来日、そこで彼がみたものは、中国人のコロニーである秦王国や、倭のオオキミの男王アメタラシヒコだった。しかし日本書紀の記載によると608年は推古天皇の時代で、女性天皇である。Hatakeyamaはこの謎に魅了にされ、今作『Butterfly's Summer And Vanished』を制作した。裴世清は恐らく朝鮮半島を経て、対馬、関門海峡、瀬戸内海、畿内（大和）というルートの旅だったはずである。Hatakeyamaはこの時間軸に沿ってアルバムを構成した。エレクトリックギターのメロディは裴世清の視点を反映し、冒険、不安、ロマンチシズムといった彼の感情を表すようなものとなった。

『Heavy Snow』など、最近の作品ではアナログシンセをメインに制作させる事が多かったHatakeyamaの作品群であるが、今作ではエレクトリックギタードローンに回帰しているが、新たに導入したペダルエフェクトや、モジュラーシンセによるエフェクトなどの手法により、ギターシンセの境地に到達。ここでの曲はほぼ、ギターによる即興演奏であり、ポストプロダクションや、エディトといったものは最低限に押さえられている。 エレクトロハーモニクスとイーブンタイドという現代のテクノロジーによる、古代へのまなざし、大海をいく小舟や渡し人、荒波、幻想、といったものがエレクトリックギターによって見事に表現された堂々たるアンビエントの傑作がいまここに誕生した。

In 608 AD, as a messenger of the Chinese emperor "Hai Sei Sei" came to Japan. So what he saw was the Chinese colony "Shin Kingdom" and the Japanese male king "Ametharashikiko". But according to the official Japanese history book, that era is the age of Emperor Suiko, the king of a woman. Hatakeyama was fascinated by this mystery and crated  his work "Butterfly's Summer And Vanished".

It is probably that "Hai Sei Sei"  passed through the Korean Peninsula and was a trip on the route of Tsushima, Kanmon Strait, Seto Inland Sea and Yamato . Hatakeyama made up this album along the time axis of his journey. The melody of the electric guitar reflects the perspective of "Hai Sei Sei", expressing his emotions such as adventure, anxiety, romanticism. In recent works, he often made analog synths mainly, but in this work I returned to the electric guitar drones. Eyes gazing at the ancient times, boats and going people over the ocean, rough waves, fantasies, etc. are magnificently expressed by electric guitars.

Chihei Hatakeyama is a sound artist , an organizer and mastering engineer who was born in 1978, and lives in the Tokyo. He has performed for years under his given name and also as one half of the electroacoustic duo Opitope, along with Tomoyoshi Date. Hatakeyama got involved in playing music through strumming a electric guitar in a few rock-oriented bands in his teenage years. Subsequently a laptop computer superseded his bands as his main platform. Hatakeyama polychromes memory-evoking soundscapes with various recorded materials of acoustic instruments such as guitars, vibraphone, and piano; mostly played by hand and processed time and time again via laptop. His first album Minima Moralia was commissioned for release by the Chicago-based label kranky in early 2006. Since then his many album was released by Room 40, Under The Spire, Hibernate Records, Magic Book Records, Home Nomal, OwnRecords, Spekk, Dronarivm, Constellation Tatsu, Glacial Movements Records and his own label White Paddy Mountain. In 2013 Hatakeyama founded the record label White Paddy Montain, which since then has released over 40 recordings by some of the most accomplished musicians and modern ambient musicians, Shoegazer and folk musicians in Japan. Recent years Hatakeyama continues to evolve his sound by analog synthesizer, modular synthesizer and compact guitar effector. Hatakeyama approaches some modular synthesizer and electric guitar drone project with an expectation of new directions.

Rhucle（ルク）は、2017年にも多数の作品を国内、海外を含めリリースした新進気鋭のアンビエント・アーティスト。 Constellation TatsuやBeer On The Rugといった名門レーベルからリリースを多数しtinymix tapesのレビューでも取り上げられ現代のアメリカを移す鏡としてBob Dylan、Pete Seeger、Phil Ochsなどのフォーク・シンガーと比較されている。彼の音楽性は言葉のない詩であって、サウンドの叙情性がそれを表している。今作『Tears』ではWilliam Basinskiなどのメロンコリアとも共通する悲しみを内在したサウンドで近代に内在する孤独で孤立した人間達を描写、Nord Lead 2から繰り出される美しい持続音が水辺のフィールドレコーディングを伴い儚くも美しいサウンドが悲しみの映像を伴って音楽で描写される。Nord Leadのサウンドはアナログ的でありながらもデジタルであり、フェイクであるのだが、またそこがこのサウンドの肝になっており、アナログシンセほどの中域の腰はないももの、逆に高域では綺麗に響くところのサウンドが未来感、SF感といったものを感じさせる。『Tears』というアルバムタイトルが象徴するように、後期資本主義社会やグローバリズムの荒波の中で、失った人間性の回復といった文学的なものがテーマである。

Rhucle is an up and coming ambient artist who released numerous works in Japan in 2017, including domestic and overseas. He released many releases from prestigious labels such as Constellation Tatsu and Beer On The Rug. His musicality is a poetry without words, the lyrical nature of the sound represents it. In this work "Tears" it depicts solitary and isolated people inherent in modernity with a sound inherent in sorrow common to Melon Korea such as William Basinski. The beautiful sustained sound delivered from Nord Lead 2 accompanies the field recording of the waterside, and the transient beautiful sound is depicted with music accompanied by the image of sorrow. As the symbol of the album "Tears" symbolizes, literary things such as the late capitalist society and the rough wave of globalism, the recovery of lost humanity is the theme.

ドイツ北部のバルト海沿岸で育ち、現在はベルリンを拠点に活動する音楽家。幼少時よりヴァイオリンの訓練を受けてきた彼は、これまでソロの他に室内楽や弦楽アンサンブル、オーケストラなどのメンバーとして演奏を行ってきた実力派ヴァイオリニスト。彼特有の繊細さを生かした室内楽作品作りに取り組んでおり、ワン・マン・アンサンブルというスタイルでのライブ演奏も行う。2012年にFactureよりリリースされたデビュー作『Paraphrases』をきっかけにRauelsson、Takeshi Nishimoto、Aaron Martinなど様々なアーティストとのコラボレーションを開始、３月にはHenning Schmiedtとのデュオ作「bei」をリリースする。また、映画音楽の分野でも活動しており、今春sonic piecesからリリースする『Conversations』ではシネマティックな室内楽としてのその真骨頂を見せている。

Family Basik（ファミリー・ベイシック）は加藤遊、加藤りまによる兄妹デュオ。2014年にファースト・アルバムをリリースし、熱心な音楽ファンの間で話題となる。今作はザ・ハイ・ラマズ、ステレオラブ、ジム・オルーク、シー・アンド・ケイク、ヨ・ラ・テンゴなどのインディー・ポップの香りを濃厚ににおわせつつ、仕上がりは70年代的な暖かみのある音となった。

また、大幅に導入されているアナログ・シンセなど電子音楽と、豊饒な生楽器群が絶妙に溶け合うような繊細なアレンジも冴え渡り、ビビオ、トロ・イ・モア、テイラー・マクファーリン、マイルド・ハイ・クラブなど現代的なドリーム・ポップやシティ・ポップにも通ずる仕上がりとなっている。

誰も知らない孤島の灯台でひっそりと育まれて来たような切なく優しい楽曲群が、英語詞で歌われる2人の絶妙なコーラス・ワークと実験的なアレンジを携えて、ついに海へと漕ぎだしたひとつの船・Family Basikの新たな航海がここから始まる。

Family Basik (Family Basic) is a brother-sister duo by Yu Kato and Rima Kato. It releases the first album in 2014 and becomes a hot topic among enthusiastic music fans. While this work concentrates the scent of indie pop such as The High Lamaz, Stereolab, Jim O'Rourke, Sea and Cake, Yo La Tengo, the finish is a 70's warmth It became a certain sound.

Also, it is wonderful to arrange electronic music such as analog synths which has been introduced to a large extent and a delicate arrangement such that fertile live instruments blend together exquisitely.

It is a painful and tender music that has been quietly raised on an isolated island lighthouse.

Two exquisite chorus work and experimental arrangement are also wonderful. A new voyage of one ship and Family Basik who finally rowed to the sea starts here.

The production team is in charge of composition, lyrics, recording, and mixing, Kato Yu is responsible, mastering is Chihei Hatakeyama. Jacket painting is painter Kenichi Tenamoto, design is in charge of ASUNA.

加藤遊、加藤りま、による兄妹デュオ。2007年結成。 ASUNAによるaotoaoレーベルの『UMU Remix』、『Casiotone Compilation Vol.5』に1曲ずつ参加後、2014年にファースト・アルバム『A False Dawn And Posthumous Notoriety 』をWhite Paddy Mountainよりリリース。 遊加藤は10代の頃より音楽活動をはじめ、90年代には単身渡英しロンドンで２年間過ごす。現地でマイ・ブラッディ・ヴァレンタインをはじめ、当時のオルタナ～シューゲイザーの中心バンドやクラブシーンなど肌で経験してきた。帰国後、2007年にFamily Basikを結成。加藤りまは90年代後半にネオアコ・ユニットのストロオズを結成し音楽活動を始め、ミディ・クリエイティブからCDデビュー。ストロオズ解散後、現在はソロ活動を行い、aotoaoからミニ・アルバム『Harmless』やカセット作品を、そして韓国ソウルのHelicopter Recrodsから『Four Songs / Cover Songs』をリリースし、2015年にファースト・フル・アルバム『Faintly Lit』をflauよりリリース。

情景的で映画のようなストーリー展開のあるアンビエント・ミュージックの作家として2000年代初頭から活動するChihei Hatakeyamaの『Maybe』に続く新作が早くも登場！2015年から製作に着手されたという本作では、これまでは違いアナログシンセを大胆に導入。その透明な透き通るようなクリーミーな音色はさらに天上世界へと飛翔しているかのうようだ。今作では雪景色がテーマとなっていて、シベリアのような雄大な自然の中に一人ポツンと取り残されたかのような孤独感を感じさせる。

Beautiful landscape of electric guitar and analog synthesizer.Hatakeyama started making this album in 2015 and then became the first work to fully incorporate modular synthesizer.The snowy scenery in winter is white anywhere and its creamy sounds seem to fly to the heavenly world. It is also a sound that makes you feel lonely as if you were left alone with a pot in the majestic nature like Siberia.The acoustic treatment that wraps around the delays and reverbs that are stretched many times, Slowly blurred white noise and even hiss noise sounds like a musical tone.
