Summer musters an iconic euphemism for guilt-free passion and each summer has its own story. During the age of Willie Lynch and Jim Crow, rural American summers would have days filled with baskets of homemade treats, sunshine, cool lemonade, family and “picking niggers to lynch.” In the the 21st century, similar engagements occur. Masked as joyus outings, summer courtships are tainted with typhoons of sweat and tears, laced with provocative On Sight productions of unadulterated flesh and are concocted with a luring lifestyle of luxury, fame and/or fortune. During a nostalgic, aggravated and occasionally mumbled verse entitled “Blood on the Leaves”, Kanye West suggests a trend of drug induced courtship and uses lynching imagery to assert his final revelation of ungodly, unattractive, and narcissistic unions enhanced by fanatic [social] media. In breif, West pairs 21st century dating with the same rational as 19th century American lynching culture— As summer ripens, strange fruit will appear.

Future recently released his self entitled album and samples Tommy Butler’s “Prison Song” in the track “Mask Off.” After analyzing West’s “Blood on the Leaves” years earlier, I couldn't help but wonder about these artists use of civil rights media. Are they just appropriating the momentous zeitgeist or alluding to the tragic epilogue of the movement itself by placing such frivolous lyrics over such iconic songs?
