“Right? You’d think they’d be able to afford cheese. It’s only a couple dollars at most,” she shook her head, a little amused by it all. “Your trouble? I’d raid a kitchen for anyone, I’ll have you know. But, thank you very much, Mr. Caldwell. You’re not looking so bad yourself.” Dressing up like this wasn’t something she got the chance to do very often, but when she did get to, she went all out. “And certainly. I’d planned on it already.”

“Saltines aren’t the worst food in the world, but you’ve gotta have something to go on top of them if you’re planning on eating more than one,” Paige explained, admittedly a little tipsy. “They should probably have cheese or some sort of spread in the kitchen somewhere, right? Should we raid it?”

Bridget focused on putting one foot in front of the other, her head swirling after her third drink. Fourth? She was already feeling unsteady in her heels but she was enjoying herself way too much to slow down, the first time she’d ever felt this way at one of these stuffy events. But with masks concealing everyone’s faces and the press being barred from entering, there was no reason for anyone to be anything but their unabashed selves, and the usual sense of artifice and bullshit at these parties was impressively absent. “So,” she slurred, grabbing onto the nearest person for balance and attempting to mask it by quickly looping her arm through theirs. “To the dance floor or back to the bar?”

Paige jumped a little at the sudden appearance of a person at her side, having not been expecting it. She’d been too lost in the wonder of the dance – both that and the uncomfortable feeling her shoes were giving her – to notice anyone around her until they actually involved her. “Well, since I only have two choices here, I’m going to go with the one that doesn’t involve embarrassment, so to the bar we go, I suppose.”

SHE WAS RIGHT, he hadn’t even introduced himself and yet, he already overshared + tried to make plans with her. maybe, he was indeed a slut — not for sex, but for companionship. “wouldn’t it be KIND OF thrilling if we spend time together without knowing each other’s names?” sure, it sounded like a plot of some lifetime horror tv movie but the concept was something cool to think about, sans the possible dangers of it. “it’s not like i’m grady caldwell’s killer or anyone else’s for that matter. are you ?” the question, however, was purely in jest. he raised his hands up in surrender before things sounded any weirder and introduced himself, “tristan wilkes, your neighborhood … well, blabbermouth? i think that’s the right description given everything i told you without knowing your name.”

Paige raised an eyebrow at his suggestion. From the second they’d started talking, Paige had an idea in her mind about what kind of person he was going to be – the kind of guy that had nothing but sex on his mind as well as the kind of guy that was pissed because he didn’t get any, but so far he was starting to turn that expectation upside down. “That’s an interesting idea, but we’d probably get sick of it in the end. We’d have nothing to call each other unless you went down the whole pet names route,” she shrugged and then rolled her eyes at his comment about being Grady Caldwell’s killer. “If I was, I surely wouldn’t tell you. But no, I’m not into murder– unless it’s in a film. Paige Whitton, your neighborhood listener to all things blabbermouth.”

tristan couldn’t argue with what she said, not because he agreed but simply because he didn’t know enough people who identified as whores to fact-check. “well, maybe loose lips is a double entendre after all,” he shrugged, chuckling lightly.”i was ready to be your plus-one for the weekend if you had great plans. all good things come in pairs you know — shoes, cufflinks, lungs, chopsticks, and so does the number of people needed for a not-so-boring weekend. but alas, here we are …”

Against her better judgment, Paige couldn’t help but laugh at his words. It was both because of the few drinks in her system that caused the laugh, but also because she hadn’t really expected him to be so blunt about something like that. “I think you might be right about that,” she grinned. “I’m sorry to disappoint, though. All good things do usually come in pairs. But I’m pretty sure my weekend is going to involve nothing more than potentially baking a cake and catching up on things on Netflix. You’re more than welcome to join if that takes your fancy, but I’d have to have your name before I let you.”

“you’re saying he called me a WHORE because i’m TALKATIVE ?” tristan ( uncertain between whether to feel anger or amusement ) resorted to simply feigning offense through a shocked gasp and clutching his chest. “what are you doing this weekend ? any sweet loving on the horizon or are you in the same boat as me —- S.S. DOOMED TO ENNUI ?”

Paige shrugged. “I mean, it’s possible– some whores do talk a lot.” She chuckled at his clearly fake offense and shook her head. “What am I doing this weekend? What has that got to do with you, huh? Maybe I’ve got really exciting plans that include this ‘sweet loving’ you talk about.” She raised an eyebrow and paused for effect before shaking her head. “But no, I’m afraid. Same boat, much to my dismay.”

“Oh, for your cigarette– I see,” Paige nodded, eyes going straight to the cigarette in the woman’s hands. She wasn’t a smoker herself, though, and she felt a little bad to have to tell her no. “I don’t actually. I can help you ask around if you’d like, though?”

jessica laughs, “you have to be able to put in the work!” she smiles and she gives the cab driver her address. “i actually have to stop at home to check on my son. so, the cab driver’ll take you wherever you wanna go and i’ll pay.” she nods and she hums when the car stops. “here. take her wherever she wants and makes sure she gets there safe, okay? there are a lot of creeps out there tonight, henry.” she holds out her hand for the other and beams, “i’m jessica and it was a pleasure being your date for the last fifteen minutes.”

“Without a doubt– it’s not worth it otherwise,” Paige agreed. She smiled at the mention of the woman’s son, though. Kids were one of the many things in life she adored. “Yes, of course. Thank you for getting me out of there. I’m thinking it’s probably time for me to end up hitting the hay anyway. I’m pretty sure that guy has turned me off of all manner of possible fun for the rest of the night,” she chuckled. Falling asleep did sound pretty damn good right now. She gave her another smile as she happily shook her hand. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Jessica. I’m Paige, and I’m glad my intuition knew you were a good one.”

“i’m sure you will,” she muses and when the other woman says her name, she nods her head. “ah, so that’s how i know you. you… direct things.” josie hums and when another shot was set in front of her, she slides it over to paige now. she needed to go home halfway sober. “i highly doubt it. they’ve all been dickwads, so i feel sorry for the son his wife is currently pregnant with. sort of. i don’t feel sorry for his wife. plenty of people told her what she was getting herself into.” the queenpin rolls her eyes. “desperation is disgusting.” she makes a face and chews on her lower lip. “it’s not really for the best…” josie leans over, “i promise, i’d get away with it. even if these people did hear the gunshot? they all know not to say a word.” josie nods her head, and she finishes off her beer.

Paige had learnt to control her surprise when people she didn’t think would recognize her did, but that didn’t stop her from raising an eyebrow as she explained that she knew Paige was a director. She nodded in confirmation. “Yeah, yeah. Just films,” she hummed and happily picked up the shot that was offered to her before downing it. She needed it. “Well, you’ve gotta feel sorry for the son. He didn’t ask to be born into that but you can already kind of guarantee what kind of son he’ll end up being.” There had been plenty of those people that she’d met before. “The gunshot, huh? That serous. Well, still– he gets to live another day, I’m sure his actual day might come one day.” She added, in her mind, that she hoped it was of old age and not a bullet.

dylan was minding his business, checking his phone to make sure that the meeting was still happening. “oh, sweetheart. you need to learn to just be honest with sleaze balls.” dylan says, taking a sip for his drink and leaning back so she wasn’t too close. ‘but. i can’t help you. i’m waiting for someone. you might want to go tell him you don’t go out with…. poor…. fans or whatever he wants to call himself.” after a small pause he talks again. “also there’s security in here. go to one of them if you’re feeling unsafe. i’m not going to mess up my business because of you.”

All of the awkwardness that Paige had been feeling only moments before disappeared as soon as he started speaking. “Oh, don’t sweetheart me,” she shook her head, suddenly on guard. “I pity whoever you’re waiting for. I sure hope your attitude perks up upon seeing them so they don’t get the same treatment. I’m sure you’re a real hit with the real potential dates.” It was taking everything in her to not roll her eyes. “I never said unsafe. Going for security is taking it a little over the top, sweetheart.”

Paige snorted. “No, you’re right about that– we can have high hopes, but they can’t be that high or we’re just kidding ourselves. We can only hope that the people that are stupid enough to have sex with him in the first place are smart enough to take measures to stop the procreation,” she agreed.

“honestly there was a fifty percent chance of that happening, but we have to stick together against creeps, don’t we?” jessica chuckles and shrugs her shoulders. she glances over where the guy was standing with his friends and she rolls her eyes. “here…” leaning over, she presses a kiss to the corner of the woman’s mouth and she brushed some hair from her face. “we can always just leave and find a different bar to drink at.” she hops off of her stool and holds out her hand for the other to take. “follow me, my dear.” jessica hums and puts some money down on the bar before pulling her out of the bar. swallowing thickly, she threw her arm out to catch a cab and she turned to pull the girl into a real kiss this time, knowing full well they were being watched by the guy and his friends, still. as soon as a cab pulls up in front of them, she pulls away with a deep breath and her cheeks were warm. jessica arches a brow before opening the door for the other female and slid in beside her. “ – there. we will be out of sight and out of mind,” she whispers.

“That, we do,” she agreed. Paige was taken a little off guard at the sudden display of affection, but she understood why – pissing off the other guy was the most important thing, and the fact that she’d found someone willing to go to all the lengths? It was certainly a good thing. Before she even knew it, she was being dragged out of the bar, and she wasn’t entirely mad about it. Nor was she particularly mad about the kiss, either. “Well, look at you, showing off all this affection. Most people would be mad about a situation like this, but you’re taking it in your stride,” she laughed as she slid into the cab. “Not sure we’re entirely out of his mind, because I’m sure he’ll be thinking about what he just saw for a while, but it’s definitely good enough.”
