Influential revolutionary leaders and figures who shape public opinion are often imagined as physically imposing individuals—charismatic, conventionally attractive, and commanding enough to dominate both a room and the public imagination. Popular culture has reinforced this expectation by portraying great leaders as almost larger-than-life figures whose appearance reflects their political power.

Jean-Paul Marat challenged this ideal. His influence rested not on physical presence, but on the force of his ideas, his writing, and his unwavering political conviction. Afflicted with a severe chronic skin disease, Marat spent much of his later life in constant pain, often working from a medicinal bath that soothed his condition. His illness not only limited his daily life but also exposed him to relentless ridicule from his political opponents, who mocked his appearance in an attempt to undermine his credibility and dehumanize him. As a result, Marat became trapped within a public image that emphasized his perceived "ugliness," allowing his physical condition to overshadow his intellectual influence and revolutionary significance in the eyes of many contemporaries.
