How's you've been doing?? I hope you're doing well. I want to ask if you don't mind. So, I have a request on AO3 on my fanfic (the oneshot ver where I let my readers to say the ideas they had.) Now, the thing is, I'm replying to them that I'm busy on irl and I have another request (+ other fanfic idea) that I'm planning to wrote. They said its fine but also said "dont take too long" which makes me hesitated. I want to know your opinion if what I'm feeling hesitated is really something normal and what should I do with it?? Anyways, thank you ^^

as for your question, if I'm being honest, the "don't take too long" part from the commenter is rude and entitled. like. genuinely rude and entitled, especially if they're a stranger. (I can sort of see two close friends joke with each other like this — even though it's not something I'd personally say to my friends, not even as a joke — but if it's from a stranger? no. just no.)

there's a difference between being excited and being rude.

unless they're paying you for your service, they don't get to say "don't take to long" to you. because you are doing something for them FOR FREE. something that is your hobby. (and the thing about a hobby is that we do it for ourselves, not for someone else.) you are being kind by offering to do something FOR FREE. and for someone to respond to the kindness you give them with "don't take too long" is discouraging, rude and extremely entitling.

I would block this person if I were you. and I'd definitely no longer be writing whatever they asked me to write.

and also a message to people in general who come across this post, be respectful to fanfic writers and fan artists who are kind enough to share what they create with you FOR FREE. you are privileged enough to get to consume their contents FOR FREE. what fanfic writers and fan artists do is their hobbies, something they do in their free time, something they do as their source of comfort. they're only kind enough to allow you to consume their works for free. you do NOT get to demand anything from them. you do NOT get to be entitled or rude toward them.

What’s the first thing that introduced you to non-con? Was it an easy introduction or was it straight into the deep end? I’ve been wanting to start reading fics with it in it so I’m just wondering!

I don’t think there’s anything that introduced me to non-con. because it’s a fantasy that I’ve always had since I was literally younger than 10 and didn’t even know what sex was, let alone rape. like. I kind of just started fantasizing about it on my own without knowing what it was / without any external factors that introduced me to it. I wasn’t even exposed to any non-con material back then. obviously even when I didn’t know what it was, I already knew it was bad in real life. I was never ashamed of myself for enjoying it though, because even when I was a kid, I could already separate fiction from reality.

but yeah I liked the fantasy first, without having seen or been exposed to any non-con material. and then I later consume (fictional) non-con material.

Also the obsession straight woman have with gay men is lowkey weird, reminds me of straight men wanting to 'turn lesbiand straight.'

The submission here is such a dishonest take.

Writing two men being attracted to each other is NOT the same as "wanting to turn lesbians straight". An equivalent of that would be women trying to "turn gay men straight". Which is literally the opposite of what's happening in yaoi ships.

The mental gymnastics in this makes me wonder if OP just wanted an excuse to bash straight women for... not providing free content that YOU specifically want to consume? These people don't owe you anything, Anon. This just reeks of entitlement.

If you think about it for just a second, it makes a great deal of sense why straight women would be attracted to romance stories between gay men. I suggest you try that, Anon, instead of twisting facts to fit your narrative.

i'm sure you get lots of asks but i'm new to the fanfic/tumblr fandom scene. when you say horrific topics like incest and noncon should exist, do you mean they should exist because it happens irl but it shouldn't be romanticized? because if so i agree. i think we should experience reading and/or writing such things. movies and shows have portrayed such acts for years. but i think the problem lies through the fetishization and romanticization of it.

no. I mean romanticize whatever you want. my stance has always been “write whatever you want, however you want.”

not to mention that you can’t always tell if something romanticizes bad things. two people can read the same fic, one can say “this romanticizes non-con”, the other can say, “no, this doesn’t romanticize anything.” it’s all about each person’s interpretation. it’s all subjective.

that said, if someone wants to romanticize bad things in fiction, then go ahead. it’s their rights and their freedom to create whatever they want, however they want. no censorship means nothing is censored, doesn’t matter how it was written/created.

and if these taboo fantasies are someone’s fetish, then as long as they’re not harming anyone in real life, what turns them on is literally none of your business.

incest and cnc kinks have always been one of the most popular kinks, and most people who are into them can separate fiction from reality.

(and if some of them can’t, their inability to separate fiction, kinks and fantasies from reality is not other people’s problem or responsibility.)

fanfiction is not an act of activism. someone’s kink and what they do in bed with their consenting partner is not an act of activism. kill the moral cop in your head. fanfiction and kinks don’t have to be “morally correct”. it can be whatever turns a person on, however turns a person on, and as long as no one in real life is harmed, what they do and how they do it is no one’s business.

you don’t have to be comfortable with it. you don’t have to like it. you don’t have to understand it. you just have to mind your own business and not shame or harass others over fiction and fantasies. because otherwise it’ll just make you a bully who wants to find a “morally correct” excuse to shame and harass innocent people.

to be clear, I believe younger artists and minors can write good fics (not to say “fanfic must always be good” either because it is a hobby and I still believe that as long as it’s done with love and the artist’s joy, it is good) and I believe it’s good when younger artists and minors start making art at young ages.

that said, a lot of fanfics out there that you read and love are done by adults with kids, jobs and responsibilities. adults who have years, decades of practice under their belts. adults who don’t let life and responsibilities take away their joy in creating.

someone’s love and passion don’t suddenly go away the second they reach a certain age. so if anything, I feel sorry for people who say “adults shouldn’t write fanfics or make fan art” because what these people really say is that they expect themselves to stop having fun and finding comfort in things that bring them joy and comfort the second they reach a certain age. it’s sad that they put an expiration date on their own fun and source of comfort.
