what are three things that you always have on you, no matter the time or place?
"cell phone, cash, a headscarf for prayer."
Have you ever been in love? If so, describe what happened.
"love? ha, no. no, i 'ave never experienced such t'ings. i love my mother and allah. everyt'ing else is temporary. but if you count loving my mother ... it taught me zat you will do anyâting for love. zere iz not one tâing in dis world i would not have done for her."
part of sloane was still regretting the decision to come. maybe it was because the bruises had never climbed this high before, had never lingered for this long. maybe it was because it was all catching up to her. she had been toeing the line for awhile now, but what was she supposed to do? backing down isnât an option. what happened was a reality of the life she leads and she knows that. but for some reason, she cares now in a way that she never had. they had moved around so much that she had never really put roots down. home had always been an intangible concept. she had found it in a new city every few nights once and now, she knows that leaving would no longer be an easy feat. she doesnât know how that makes her feel. but yas was helping to make the night enjoyable. they always had a good time together. âyas, you look beautiful. and even more than that, you look badass. but hey, if itâs still bothering you inside, weâll fashion you a wrap, alright? weâll make it work.âÂ
yasmiin stiffened ever so slightly when sloane mentioned her clothing bothering her. âitâz not bothering me,â the girl interjected, the edges of her tone sharpened in defensiveness. it was bothering her, deep down. but more than that it bothered her that showing her shoulders and having her hair uncovered made her feel so ... naked. vulnerable. uncomfortable. she wanted to feel empowered and confident regardless of what she wore, but her upbringing would not allow her to show what she was showing tonight without shame. it wasnât something she spoke about, but it was something that yasmiin had been struggling with ever since she came to america and tonight she just couldnât shake it. âi will be okay.â she promised, softening her tone and trying to relax as she put her mask on. her arm went around sloane. âwe will have fun, hm? i am sure there will be plenty of entertaining tâings to do once we are inside.â
it  was  astounding  how  seriously  people  seemed  to  take  valentineâs  day  around  here,  but  it  was  something  heâd  grown  somewhat  accustomed  to  at  this  point  â-  and  of  course,  he  wasnât  one  to  turn  away  gifts,  especially  if  they  were  good  gifts.   itâd  been  a  long  day  at  the  office;  the  day  was  no  different  for  him,  obviously,  but  all  day,  the  champagne  yasmiin  had  gotten  him  was  practically  calling  his  name  nonstop.   when  she  showed  up  at  his  condo  that  evening,  heâd  pretty  much  expected  as  much,  especially  considering  she  was  in  the  same  building.   he  simply  rolled  his  eyes  at  her  statement  â-  he  hadnât  forced  her  to  drink  any;  he  wasnât  dumb,  he  understood  why  she  didnât,  but  he  was  also  all  for  it  if  she  wanted  to.   â  ah,  come  on  now,  we  both  know  that  isnât  true,  â  he  pointed  out,  hand  reaching  over  to  take  one  of  the  glasses,  his  gaze  stopping  for  a  quick  second  on  the  bracelet  heâd  gotten  her  â-  at  least  she  liked  it.   â  cheers  to  yet  another  commercialized  holiday.  â
"you are a dirty liar!â she exclaimed dramatically when he denied that he had been a bad influence on her, a vibrant and playful smile shining on her lips. she noted his eyes pausing on the bracelet, her smile softening as some unfamiliar type of warmth spread through her chest and down into her stomach. yasmiin loved getting gifts, and she especially loved getting gifts when they were picked out by people that she connected with, who understood her and her taste. very few people could do that for her because very few had gotten close enough to know. oddly enough, she felt some sort of happiness about samuel being able to pick out something that she actually liked enough to wear. âno no no, we cheer to someâting better, tâink ...â she insisted, looking up to the sky in thought. âcheers to ... another holiday spent together! we add zis one to ze tally sheet, even if it iz a silly, commercialized holiday,â her nose scrunched at him as she extended her glass, waiting for him to meet hers in toast. âand to ze fablous bracelet you sent me! i love it, big heart eyes, tâank you very much.â
âme?â naomi questioned before waving her hand dismissively. âlook at you. like a princess come to life, truly. god, i would have killed for a dress like this a few years ago,â the blonde gushed, letting her bright eyes scan over yasmiin carefully. she gave her a nod of approval. âoh,â naomi let out, adverting her gaze around the room before she spotted chris talking to a co-worker. âfigured iâd give the boys some space. i can only take so much, once i hear football i take that as my cue to start making my rounds.â naomi adverted her gaze to yasmiin once again, flashing her a grin. âdid you come with anyone tonight?â
"yes, i said!" yaz nodded quickly as naomi tried to dismiss her compliment, licking her lips as the compliment was reversed back to her. "tâank you," she gave a modest smile, but quickly moved past the topic off her appearance. she felt uncharacteristically uncomfortable in her skin tonight. "i understand. it'z not az eef they knew you were dere anyway at zat point," she joked, moving in closer to naomi and plucking a glass of mocktail going past them on a tray. "t'ank you!" she hummed, taking a drink to wet her nervous throat as hey eyes scanned the crowd briefly. naomi's question grabbed her attention, eye going to meet the other's. "me?" she scoffed, shaking her head and taking another sip of her drink. "i do not date. i came with sloane after we got ready togetâher, but we split up some times ago."
yasmiin and sloane stood outside in line waiting to get into the masquerade, their matching masks held in their hands to apply to their faces to be checked before entering. they had gotten ready together and everything was fun and smooth just like things always were with them, but now as they neared the door the girl found herself turning to her friend with a concerned look on her face. "i 'ave a bad feeling about all zis tonight, slo." her eyes were serious for the few brief seconds they met her best friend's, a sigh leaving her lips as she shook her head to dismiss her thoughts and face forward in line again. "i'm sure t'is not'hing. i am just self conscious about skin," her fingers trailed over her bare shoulders, not used to showing so much skin and not daring to look down at them. âat least no one will know tâis me if i keep my moutâ close.â @sloaneshq
"you look amazing ms.abrahm," yasmiin complimented with poise from her seated position by the open bar. she wasnât drinking, but had somehow gotten separated from sloane and had yet to run into anyone else that she knew. seeing naomi, she slid off of the barstool and smoothed her gown down, her curls cascading down around her arms and torso. âwhere is chris? i ezâpected to see the two of you together here,â a faint smile came onto her lips. it was hard for yasmiin to open up to people on a personal level, and despite naomiâs efforts she knew that they both felt resistance on her part. but talking about men was one social activity that yasmiin could do with anybody and she often used naomiâs relationship as a conversation starter, since her own relationships were ... well, by choice, non-existent. @heynaomi

Andyâs eyes flickered through the crowd - what she could see of them past their masks anyway, as she walked down the stairs to meet them. Her eyes searched for a familiar face. A task that was heightened when the photobooth came into view. She put her own mask down upon arriving to the nearest person. âHi!â The bright smile and searching gaze was part of her hopeful state. âHow do you feel about photobooths?â
it took a few seconds for yasmiin to register who has approached her, recognizing her as chris' younger sister. but the girl was closer to her age than his, she was almost certain. "hi andy," she hummed, returning andy's greeting with a much more reserved smile. at her question, yasmiin's eyes scanned and landed on the nearby photobooth. "they are low quality and outdated - we've better picture quality in our iphonez den in those t'ings dese days."

âItâs stupid,â leo huffed out in disapproval, reaching around the back of his mask to untie it before pulling it from his face. âi show up in sunglasses and sheâs all like âthatâs not sufficientâ â and i said âoh yeah? then how come they put that black bar over peopleâs eyes to keep them anonymous, huh?â same thing.â despite his words, leo was already working to get the mask back over his face, positioning it more comfortably this time. âshe didnât have to be so rude about it, is all iâm sayinâ. if youâre going for people not being able to recognize each other you should have made us put bags over our heads.â he pointed to his hair, unamused as ever. âdead fucking giveaway.â
yasmiin smiled lightly as she listened to leo's shenanigans, shaking her head as she sipped a glass of water rather than one of the many wines, champagnes, and mixed drinks that were floating around. once he pointed at his hair, she giggled despite herself. for them to have been friends with benefits, they had to have been friends first. sheâd always found leo charming, talented, and funny most of all. âyou are preaching to ze choir,â she sighed sweetly, shaking her long curls out absently with the tips of her nails, âpeople know me as soon az i open my mouât.â she tried to conceal her accent a lot of the time, especially in business/work situations, but tonight she didnât want to bother. the stakes werenât high for her identity to remain a secret.

YASMIINâS MASQUERADE // EVENT 7
masquerade! paper faces on parade masquerade! hide your face so the world will never find you masquerade! every face a different shade masquerade! look around, there's another mask behind you
another gasp fell from leoâs lips at her words, one more dramatic than the first. âyou donât even know your own strength,â he let out in a tsk, shaking his head as he did so, slowly straightening up. âi disagree. my arm is throbbing, yasmiin. how am i gonna play guitar now?â he asked her with wide eyes. the act was immediately dropped as soon as she asked him about his music and he was quick to nod, shoving his hands into his pockets. âoh, yeah. itâs uh, itâs goinâ.â
"ha! my own strength, yes, sure --" she repeated in a near-snort, shaking her head, âyou will play just how you have always played.â her eyes averted, mouth tucking the sides of her lips in to contain her smile while her arms crossed, waiting for the monorail. it didnât take long for her eyes to wander back over to him as he spoke again, her body not giving him the satisfaction of facing him in attention despite her mind being focused on him now rather than her lateness. how long has it been now since weâve spoken? "i am sure it'z going," she hummed, "i have always known you to be a very talented man."
naomi let yasmiin through the house until they reached her office, setting her purse down and letting the folders fall on top of the desk. she settled into her desk, pushing one file in particular towards the younger. âtry this one. homicide case,â naomi leaned back into her seat, bright eyes watching the other carefully. âi picked this one because⌠i figured it was the best example of how these proceedings typically go. the curve balls they like to throw, so on and so on.â
yasmiin watched naomi in return, studying the woman's features. clearly there was something that she was supposed to catch, so her dark eyes were careful as they began to study the file. nodding her head, her brows raised slightly. "yes, i see ..." her nails tapped against the table lightly as she read. "on guard constantly, in the courtroom. like a sea full of sharks." licking the tip of her finger, she flipped another page and continued reading. âmany of these curveballs couldâave been avoided with proper planning.â
