âOh Percy, youâre so wonderful!â
The voice of Paulette emanated from the TV as Lapis Lazuli and Peridot sat on the couch across from it. They were marathoning their favorite show, Camp Pining Hearts, for probably the fifth timeâŠthat week. Lapis sat next to Peridot, leaning back on the couch, arms crossed. She stared contently at the TV, feeling grateful that things had calmed down in her life. She glanced over at Peridot, who was watching the screen with even more intensity than most people who were viewing the show for the first time would. Lapis smiled, finding this adorable, though she didnât understand why.
She looked back toward the TV and absentmindedly leaned over to rest her head on Peridotâs shoulder. She sighed a bit, content. This contentment only lasted for a fleeting moment, of course, as most contentment Lapis had ever felt did.
Only a few moments after Lapis rested her head on Peridotâs shoulder, Paulette did the same to Percy. It was then that the blue gem realized she had done it. She squinted at the TV, confused. Was this a romantic gesture? Lapis knew from having watched the entire series many times before that Paulette and Percy were romantically involved. Plus, considering that this was the fateful âcampfire sceneâ from season four, there was no questioning the intent behind the simple gesture. And Lapis had just done the same thing without even thinking.
Blushing in embarrassment, Lapis sat up again. She looked down at the floor, worried about what Peridot might be thinking. Lapis had never thought too hard about the minutiae of the campfire scene, but knowing Peridot, she definitely had. âOh noâŠâ Lapis thought to herself. âWhat if Peridot thinks I have romantic feelings for her?â That would certainly be awkward. She didnât feel that way about PeridotâŠDid she?
Peridot watched intently, barely blinking as the episodes ran from one to another. They were halfway through season four and the impending disappointment of season five made her toes wiggle a foot off the floor.
Paulette. Why did Percy fawn over Paulette? She was useless! She had no tact, no usable talents. What use was she to the camp structure and the ongoing colour war? Pierre was still the optimum choice for Percy but apparently the show writers were too inferior to recognise the compatibility.
So engrossed was Peridot in the episode that she barely noticed when Lapisâs head dropped to the green gemâs shoulder. It wasnât until a cut scene Peridot felt Lapisâs blue hair tickle at her shoulder. She glanced down, toes curling in sudden self consciousness and she stopped breathing, keeping as still as possible to accommodate Lapisâs action.
In a millisecond, the scene had opened again, camera zoomed into crackling flames, Percy speaking off screen as the camera pulled out to reveal the camp goers sat around a fire. Paulette was sat next to him, tops of their arms brushing against each other and her head was resting against Percyâs shoulder.
As the scene moved forward, Lapis sat straight, and immediately Peridot began to breath again although her shoulder felt colder now without Lapis against it.
âUh, Lapis? If youâre tired we can turn this off and get some rest?â She stated, glancing up at the taller gem, keeping her chin lowered.
Lapis tensed her shoulders, feeling Peridotâs gaze upon her. She silently willed herself to stop blushing, but to no avail. Thoughts and questions raced through her mind. âUgh, now Iâve made things awkward⊠what is she thinking right now? Why am I so worried about this? What does this even mean?â
Lapis sighed a bit. Maybe rest was a good idea. She needed some time to calm down and process this unwarranted anxiety. Surely what had happened hadnât meant anything at all, and Peridot likely thought nothing of it. Lapis was probably just overthinking it. After just a moment too long of silence, she responded.
âYeah, I think I need to get some restâŠâ
Without looking back at Peridot, she stood up and started toward her hammock. She hoped that Peridot wouldnât follow her or ask any more questions as she usually did. Lapis appreciated Peridotâs concern for her wellbeing, but it didnât always help. The smaller gem was so bent on understanding the reason behind everything, but oftentimes Lapis didnât even know the reason for why she felt the way she did. This was especially true that night.
Lapis walked across the barn to the corner where she often slept. Maybe a good nightâs sleep would clear her mind.
Peridot cocked her head to the side a little, eyebrows furrowing behind her visor as she assessed Lapisâs sigh.
As the blue gem got off the couch, Peridot sat up on her knees, leaning her balled palms on the arm of the chair to watch Lapis leave, opening her mouth and letting out a tiny squeak as words failed her.
She knew as a good friend, she was required to help Lapis, and Peridot was getting better at picking up on other gemsâ feelings and initiating the appropriate response. But maybe Lapis needed time to rest and get herself in a better head space before Peridot intervened?
As Lapis crossed the barn, Peridot let out her own sigh, sinking down onto the the couch, digging her knuckles into the padding of the arm and releasing a few times before she dropped back, laying flat against the couch, letting out a âyeouch!â as the back of her head hit the wood under the foam of the other arm of the chair.
Lapis crossed the barn to her hammock and climbed inside. She curled up tightly and closed her eyes, hoping that sleep would come easily. For the first few minutes, her jumbled thoughts were loud and annoying, but she was able to doze off relatively quickly. She was unable to sleep well, however. She tossed and turned restlessly as nightmares filled her head. A cascade of terrifying images swirled through her mind relentlessly.
When she did awaken, it was abrupt. Her eyes shot open and dashed around the barn. Upon realizing where she was, she began to calm down, but she was still significantly shaken. She knew that it was pointless to try to sleep any more that night, so she decided to get some fresh air. She quietly flew through the door and over the fields, landing in the middle of the corn field. She sat down on the ground and looked up at the sky. It was still dark out, but there was enough light in the sky to tell that the sun was about to come up.
Lapis sat there and watched the sunrise for a long time. A lot had happened the night before, and she needed some time to herself to process it all.
As Pink Diamond turned and stormed off once again, Pearl let out a sigh of relief. She had expected her new owner to react to her unprecedented speech in a similar fashion to the way her former one would have. So when Pink Diamond did not respond with anger or violence, Pearl felt herself relax. However, that sense of relief was quickly replaced by a feeling of disappointment. While what she had said hadnât made the problem worse, it certainly hadnât made it any better.
Unable to deal with the guilt of disappointing her new owner, Pearl began to follow her again. She took quicker steps this time to catch up, until she was following right at Pink Diamondâs heels. Thoughts raced through her mind. She needed to say something more; she had to prove that she was worth something. Swallowing her nerves, she spoke again.
âMy Diamond, I promise that I will be worth your while if you just give me a chance. You deserve a dedicated servant, and being that for you is all that I desire. Whatever it is that you need, I will do my absolute best to provide.â Pearl sighed again, realizing that she was kissing up far too much. White Diamond would have already scolded her for all of this useless pandering, and there was no doubt that Pink Diamond would find it annoying at the very least. She stopped in her tracks and focused her gaze on the ground, losing hope that she could win Pink Diamondâs trust.
When she spoke again, it was in a resigned tone. âOr, if youâd rather me leave you alone, just say the word.â
@smallish-pink-gem
When Pearl spoke again, Pink felt disgust rise in her. She was angry, hurt, sadâŠand she wanted to be. She wanted to feel all of the emotions swirling tumultuously inside her; wanted to yell, and pitch a fit, and hit things. Appeasement was the very last thing Pink wanted at this moment even if her new pearl wanted so desperately wanted her to calm down so soon.
No one understood. Not White, not her pearl, not any of the other diamonds. They didnât understand her insistence to keep her broken pearl anymore than they understood the smallest diamond herself. To everyone, pearls were servants, made to keep on task and speak when spoken to; made to do whatever their diamond said when they said it, to think and agree with only what their diamond thinks. But Pink Pearl was so much more than that.
Pink Pearl had a mind of her own. When not in court, and only then because of how the other diamonds would react, Pink Pearl said what she wanted when she want. Sometimes she and Pink disagreed and that was okay because then they could talk and all Pink ever wanted was some attention, negative or not. All she wanted was to be listened to. Pink Pearl did that.
âThis isnât about you,â she told the smaller gem, voice too harsh. âNothing about this is about you, understand? You donât have to do this. JustâŠjust, stop talking, alright?â
Pearl flinched at Pink Diamondâs harsh words. Not really at the words, necessarily, more at the tone in which she said them. The words themselves were nothing out of the ordinary for Pearl to hear. Of course it wasnât about her. Nothing ever had been. She knew that better than anyone, and yet, she was always chastised for bringing too much focus to herself.
She opened her mouth again, as a reflex, but then paused, remembering Pink Diamondâs final request. Pearl let out a sigh. If it was her Diamondâs wish for her not to speak, she ought to comply. As much as she dismayed the thought, she knew that Pink Diamond wanted nothing to do with her. She would be better off to report back to White Diamond and see if she could make herself useful elsewhere. She turned on her heel-
Just then, she stopped in her tracks. An icy chill ran down her spine at just the thought of her name. White DiamondâŠ. How would she react if she found out that her former pearl had immediately failed at her new assignment? She shuddered, a million ideas of how her former ruler could react running through her mind. None of the possibilities ended well.
Pearl glanced back at Pink Diamond. She knew that Pink would only become more angry with her if she persisted, but Pearl was definitely more afraid of what White Diamond would do if she gave up than of what Pink Diamond would do if she kept trying. Inhaling deeply, she turned and followed after Pink Diamond, pushing her anxiety away long enough to speak again.
âI do apologize for being so selfish, My Diamond. I promise I had no intention of turning the focus of the conversation toward myself. I only wished to inform you of how I could be of value to /you/. Whatever it is that you desire, I will find a way to procure. All I ask is that you allow me to be your faithful servantâŠâ
Pearl trailed off a bit, beginning to lose hope. Pink Diamond would never listen to her obsequious rhetoric. She wracked her brain for a different approach, but she knew no other way to speak to a Diamond. It was hopeless. She would surely fail to please her new owner. Anxiety rose up in her, and soon gave way to irritation. Her emotions got the best of her, as they often did, and without thinking, she shouted out in frustration.
âWhy wonât you just let me do this for you?!â
Pink stopped in her tracks as Pearlâs voice echoed through the hall. For a moment, she just stood there, appalled that Whiteâs pearl would ever speak to a diamond in such a way and unsure of how to react to it. It was a move only the other diamonds would have dared to make. Even Pink Pearl had never raised her voice at a diamond.
Slowly, she spun around, taking in the form of the pearl through wide eyes. For a second, Pearlâs outburst had even pushed her loss from her mind as she tried to comprehend the tone taken with her from such a small lifeform.
Pink tried to find the words to say but none would come. How was she to address this? The other diamonds would have punished her whether by proofing or, in extreme cases, shattering but Pink didnât feel irritation. Just surprise and a sense of flattery that Pearl wanted her bad enough to misbehave like this. Everyone else would have just turned their backs and ignored the little diamond when she worked herself up into one of her tantrums.
Pearl glared at the Diamond, still too caught up in her frustration to realize how utterly defiant she was acting. Even as Pink turned to look at her in awe, she did not back down. All the fear, anger, and irritation she felt because of this whole mess had been building inside her, and it had gotten to be so much that she could no longer contain it. She lashed out once again.
âI was made for one singular purpose, and that purpose is to serve the Diamond Authority. And thatâs not just my sole purpose, itâs my sole desire! I live and breathe to serve you and the other Diamonds! And I have never once doubted my allegiance. No matter how many times White Diamond chastised me, hurt me, or threatened to shatter me, I never once wavered in my loyalty to her.â
Pearl was visibly trembling now, unable to contain the sheer resentment inside of her. âAnd I would do the same for you, but you wonât let me!â She paused, the weight of her words hanging heavy over the both of them.
After a moment, Pearl was struck by the realization of her actions. Her eyes went wide as she stared at Pink Diamond in horror. Had she really just raised her voice at a Diamond? She shuddered, knowing exactly how White Diamond would have punished such behavior. Her voice shook as she spoke once again.
âI am so sorry, My Diamond⊠I donât know what just came over meâŠâ She stared down at the floor, bracing herself for Pink Diamondâs reaction.
âNo,â said Pink as soon as she could form decent thoughts again. She knelt down to sit on her knees, putting herself better on her new pearlâs level though she didnât look at her. The smallest diamond almost looked like a shamed child as she sat there before her servant. âI needed to hear that. You wonât replace Pink Pearl, butâŠif you are truly that determined to be by my side, to serve me, then perhaps I should give you a chance.â
Here, she met the pearlâs eyes and despite her standing, far above that of a pearlâs, she seemed almostâŠapologetic. It was true that she was being unfair to Whiteâs pearl. In her grief and anger, however, she couldnât help it. It was justified. But she saw now that this pearl was not the complacent servant other pearls tended to be. And if that was the case, maybe she wanted this pearl too.
Pearl looked up at Pink Diamond, awe and confusion in her expression. She had never before experienced such merciful treatment from a Diamond. The tension in her body began to relax as it set in that Pink Diamond wasnât going to punish her. A wave of relief and gratitude washed over her. She now knew almost certainly that this Diamond would be much kinder to her than White had ever been.
âThank you, My Diamond.â
The pearl dared take a few steps forward, eyes gleaming with adoration. A smile crept across her face, what little self confidence she had returning. Now that she had been granted a chance, she would dedicate her entire life to Pink Diamond. Now more than ever before, she was determined to be a faithful servant to Pink Diamond. There was fire in her eyes as she spoke.
âI wonât let you down.â
