A day of trad and DWS with friends

Before climbing was illegal and after meeting Mr Whittaker (twice!)

And just like that, my first year at uni is over. It has been amazing and I know I couldn't have asked for a better university experience. The decision to study here was honestly a cop out; I didn't want to study, and I knew I couldn't make myself, so I accepted an unconditional offer to come here over my preferred place at a russel group institution. As a result, I have been on an amazing course that has allowed me to relax all year (and sometimes skip the lectures in pursuit of adventures) without my grade suffering. The city itself is small and beautiful and my accommodation was right in the middle of it, allowing me to walk anywhere I wanted in under 30 minutes, and even reach the sea in less than 10. This part of the country is perfect for outdoor bouldering, caving, and trad, and being so close to friends all the time meant that I could get a group together and enjoy the day doing any activity we wanted in no time at all. Ive found that the independence and student lifestyle are a great part of uni life that really give you room to grow and flourish. It's now time to head back to my own corner of the country with my parents and start working to fund next year's adventures. I'm excited to be closer to my boyfriend for a few months because I know we'll be enjoying the summer together with plenty of sport climbing and just enjoying eachother's company in general, but I'm also going to miss having so many friends near by with the same interests and just as much free time as me. I'll be spending a lot of time alone this summer, but hopefully I'll also be able to fill some of that time with learning new skills (I've got my eye on routesetting some cool problems!). All in all, I've loved my first year and can't wait for the second year and next year's house full of climbers, but I'm also looking forward to spending some time at home with the people I'm closest to.
Got the red on the slab at last. I hadn't tried it in about a month, and back then I couldn't even get to the bar for the pinch. So pleased to finally be seeing improvements in my bouldering, it's just a shame it's at the cost of my lead climbing

Here are a couple of shots from France last month :D
Roche Rock, 13th August 2018 "The chapel, built on the precipitous outcrop, ingeniously incorporates the bedrock in its structure. Built of large squared blocks of granite, probably quarried from the surrounding moor, its construction in this position must have been a masterpiece of mediæval engineering. It stands two storeys high with a lower room in which, according to tradition, lived a hermit attended by his daughter who fetched water for him from a hole in the rocks known as Gonetta’s Well. The room above served as the chapel. Although the west wall has all but disappeared, the east wall survives to almost its full original height, with a large arched window now missing its tracery. Old drawings of the rock hint at further buildings on top of the rock, but these have long disappeared, as has the chapel’s roof. Access to the chapel was originally by rock-cut steps but is now by an iron ladder (take care!). The precise reason for building it is unclear. It may simply represent continuity of religious activity on a site long-venerated or may be a pious but very visible reminder of the importance of the person or group that funded its construction. One suggestion is that it could have stood as a light or beacon for guiding travellers across the moors; another that it was set up in imitation of the most famous place of pilgrimage of St Michael in Cornwall, St Michael’s Mount, perhaps even with the aim of attracting pilgrims en route for the Mount."
Started this week off by building a free standing hangboard. It took around 8 hours and lots of head scratching, but we did a pretty good job considering neither of us have any DIY experience. It’s super sturdy and looks right at home out in the garden. Time for some major strength improvements 💪😁 In the next couple of months I’m shadowing a number of sessions at climbing centres in both Swindon and Bristol for my CWI so hopefully I’ll be able to do the assessment not long after moving down to Plymouth. I can’t wait to have this qualification so I can instruct my favourite sport all around the UK 🤗
Messed around in the river wye today as a break from my usual activities. Also made friends with a beautiful dog who looked more like a sheep than anything else. I've got a good feeling about this summer 😄
Enjoyed practicing on some slabby stuff at Rockstar the other day, definitely think balance is my thing 😋 It's time I got back into a routine with climbing; definitely feeling weaker than ever but hopefully that can change. I've got my CWI training booked now at Redpoint Bristol and have the next 3 months to shadow and lead as many sessions at possible at various walls. Hopefully I'll complete the assessment around September/October so I can start a new job at Plymouth as early as possible. Seems as though things are coming together 😁
