Backstory:
Pre-SFAWTDE:
- wilde was long distance best friends with casen, had been for years now, the pair having met a few times in real life, though mostly communicating online. naturally, the two played various games together, predominantly minecraft.
- wilde found an odd tutorial while browsing minecraft forums, a tutorial said to reveal some sort of secret.
- wilde encouraged cas to follow the tutorial with him.
- over time as the pair discovered the constructs of the King in Yellow cas grew more apprehensive but wilde pressured him to keep moving forward by his side, insisting that it was just a game.
- things get more absurd, more horrifying, more broken as they progress. they come across the abandoned town with the yellow fountain in the center, the town known as carcosa.
- the pair encounter a yellow bricked maze that goes on for hours.
- inevitably, the pair is split up.
- wilde doubles back, beginning to panic, searching for cas.
- he finds a previously yellow hallway built out of copper blocks.
- he’s more frightened than he figures he should be, laughing dryly and reminding himself that it’s just a game, even though he frantically messages cas on discord to try and see what happened to him. The dread sets in as cas doesn’t answer.
- he begins lashing out, destroying carcosa to try and figure out what the hell was wrong with this place. In his rampage he finds a secret passageway that derek would later locate. this is the one that leads to the grand yellow doors, the gateway.
- wilde steps through the doors and witnesses the King in Yellow.
- mind flooded with infinite knowledge, wilde passed out.
- when he awakes the King is gone and a copper nugget is clenched tightly in his hand. having seen it all he now knows of cas’ fate. furthermore, he knows it’s his fault.
- now able to know what happens in the future he can see that eventually derek will find his world and follow in his footsteps.
- unlike derek though, he doesn’t try to warn who would come after him. he simply just starts walking. walking through the gateway and into nowhere. he’s resigned to fate, knowing that there was nothing he could possibly do to stop the oncoming events. he knew derek, he knew avery, but he just didn’t try.
- in his dissociative wandering he comes across a gateway that leads to an infinite field of sunflowers, pointing east as they always do.
- he walked westward, hand brushing the petals of the flowers he passed. eventually he gave up, collapsing onto the earth, barely visible under the tall flowers.
- he began to dig.
- he dug down to bedrock, hollowing out what functioned as almost a cage for himself. He told himself that the King couldn’t reach him down here, but he knew that was a lie. The only reason he could stay there was because the King wanted him to. that’s why the King kept him alive, kept him fed, kept changing the surface to keep his brain from falling apart completely.
- how long had it been? months? a year? how was he even still alive in the real world? There was no real world to him anymore.
Events of DAWTDE:
- the King only brings derek to wilde in an attempt to get them both out of the picture while He overtakes avery.
- when derek initially finds the library, he finds something that grabs his attention. a sunflower unnaturally placed on the wooden floors. he follows the trail of them that appears.
- derek finds the gateway to the sunflower world, immediately noticing that something is off. the sunflowers… were facing the wrong direction. west rather than east. he followed them. when he reached the point where the sunflowers met, he dug.
- and he found him.
- and they met.
- and they existed in each other's presence for months.
- but derek needed to keep going, needed to understand this place and to save avery.
- wilde had given in, though. he said it was useless, that they should just enjoy the time they have before it’s taken from them. that the King clearly had them here for a reason, some plan to be carried out. why bother resisting?
- derek leaves, heading back for the library.
- when derek and avery reunite after the encounter with the King, when derek has conceptualized his plan to take out Hastur, derek tells avery to go find wilde and go to the tree.
- when the two meet they’re both confused, though for different reasons. avery was confused as to why there was another person here and furthermore why derek had never mentioned him. wilde was confused because he didn’t understand why derek would send avery to him. - he got a bad feeling.
- wilde told avery to go up ahead, to find out where Derek was headed because something wasn’t right. he turned back, looking for carcosa. more specifically, looking for the book with the spell. he needed to know it was still there.
- the book was missing. he ran to the temple as fast as he could.
- he only got there when derek pushed avery off of the ledge.
[EXCHANGE TRANSCRIPT REDACTED]
- wilde left the game.
- the tears in wilde's eyes obscured his vision of his computer screen, making pressure build within his skull until it felt as if it would collapse, that he’d die alongside him, before-
- the pressure snapped into a faint buzz.
- and he was fine.
- he gets a notification on his computer. A document shared with him.
Post-DAWTDE:
- avery and wilde reach out to each other, having essentially traumabonded over the experience. they become friends.
- wilde suffers from severe brain fog and vague memories of the knowledge he gained. he has a perpetual faint buzzing headache unless he’s looking at the screen of the same computer he used back then.
- he writes to derek occasionally. so does avery.
- cas had been missing and was never found but avery and wilde knew. They have a makeshift graveyard for cas and derek.
- "I think i’m content with missing you for the rest of my life."
