Caleb and Nott/Veth are, if you haven't already noticed, my faves!! This will also be a blog for my love of everything Liam O'Brien and Sam Riegel!
caleb not having a fucking clueee how to interact with yeza for the entire c2 is genuinely one of the best character decisions liam made for him its so funny. its like everytime yeza is in the room caleb has 2 dialogue options and 1 is like say hi to yeza and 2 is like tell yeza his wife is the most beautiful women you've ever met and you would die for her RIGHT NOW and caleb hits option 2 everytime and then sort of scurries away
Caleb jumping in when Nott's giving Fjord shit is so funny to me mostly because like. He literally likes Fjord. Is the thing. It's not like he doesn't like Fjord. She clearly just Activates Something inside of him.
she had a gun. she used it three times. one shot was a miss. one was aimed directly at her friends ass. only once did it help in battle. she dismantled it and put it back together perfectly with no prior experience and then used the info she got from that to make explosives. she named it Sweet Baby. noone is doing it like her
āGoodnight, boys!ā Veth calls over her shoulder.
Caleb watches over the back of the couch as Veth and Yeza disappear, a fond smile dancing across his face. Essek watches him watch them, and says, āYou can join them, if you like. This is a dense oneāIāll be here reading all night.ā He holds up the book in question.
Calebās gaze returns to him. Thereās a softness around his eyes that fills Essek with warmthāCalebās eyes always used to look so tired. Itās taken years to wash most of that exhaustion from his gaze.

ok widobraves where are they at in their pining cycle. whose turn is it. do we think veth has truly moved on from her feelings for caleb because theyāre both in relationships or do you think she still harbours some deep yearning. do you think caleb was awakened like a sleeper agent by her saying she has an open relationship? do you think heās disappointed itās not true? or relieved?
He has been picking her name apart for as long as heās known her. There is no comma, she says. Sheās simply Not Brave. He finds himself disagreeing ā she walks openly in public, protected by nothing but a hood and a porcelain mask. She throws herself at their enemies so that he wonāt have to, shields him and takes blows that were meant for him.
She is certainly braver than he is, at the very least. Nervously, he rubs at the pendant hidden underneath his coat, and pushes it deeper into the folds of fabric. Yes, she is certainly braver than he is. He is still running after all, always running.
Much later, after theyāve found some friends and lost a friend and made another, sheās still the bravest person he knows. And he knows a lot of brave people, now.
And as it turns out in the end, itās an anagram. Which is funny (itās sad), because he enjoys playing with words and letters, so of course heās tried doing that with her name before. Tried pulling the letters apart, shifting them into nice things to describe her with, something to cheer her up with on those cold and miserable days.
Nothing he could come up with was ever very good. Itās a tricky name to work with, and though he arranged it into quite a few different words, there were always letters left over, clumsily abandoned on the roadside as they walked. Sheād laugh and thank him for his efforts, but thereād always be something pained to her smile, something awkward to the way sheād change the topic soon after.
He knows why, now.

The letters click neatly into place, not a single one wasted or forgotten, and he wonders if her Luc and her Yeza fit into her life just as smoothly, without any of his own clumsy fumbling.
Normally, I only take prompts that have the format of a single character name, and a one-word prompt. ;) But Widobrave is my forever love, so how could I resist those two? So I chose to interpret the name "Nott" as the prompt instead.
Also, you're my buddy, so you get special buddy privileges. ;D
Caleb and Veth have such a special, complex place in each other's lives, and I'll never not be emo about them. :') It's about the unfulfilled longing and pining and tenderness, augh,,,
This started as a reply to one comment on this post I made a week or so ago, stumbled into thoughts I've been having about various other comments on this post in tags and such and ultimately I decided it's become it's own meta so here it is.
To clarify my original post, Yeza does have a reason to be uncomfortable around Caleb even though Caleb and Veth never have sex. This isn't, in my opinion, a lack of communication or Yeza misreading something either. He knows what's going on between Caleb and Veth as well as they do even if everyone else is still confused.
So here's my best attempt at a better explanation of Caleb, Veth and Yeza's weird relationship:
Firstly, the mother/son dynamic between Caleb and Veth is a thing fandom has blown entirely out of proportion. In canon, Nott only mentions it once in a context of "Caleb's not my parent, if anything I'm his because I take care of him" but that was less claiming Caleb as her child and more trying to explain their dynamic to the rest of the Nein. She wanted to make them understand that Nott's not a child and of the two of them Caleb was the more vulnerable. Neither of them ever bring up a parent/child relationship between them after Nott clarifies that she's the protector. Caleb never indicates he thinks of Nott as a mother and only once brings up thinking of Nott as sort of a younger sister.
These conversations also take place early in the campaign when the characters are still settling into their roles. Using only that situation to define Caleb and Nott's relationship completely ignores their development in later parts of the campaign where this idea is contradicted by other emotions and feelings that are brought up. These changes and development make Caleb and Veth's relationship complicated to say the least but parent/child is not the end vibe, if it was even the starting vibe in the first place.
Veth canonly finds Caleb attractive. She states as much several times and admits to Beau she thought him attactive from their first meeting. She also canonly kissed him and calls Caleb "the second love of her life" (both happening after Veth's reunited with her husband no less). Caleb also has an emotionally charged conversation with Beau that implies even if he doesn't feel the exact same way Veth does, that his emotions towards her aren't completely platonic. Which is why Caleb's so weird around Yeza and backs off when he's there. Caleb knows the things he and Nott do together and say to each other aren't things appropriate to do and say around her husband.
Yeza has every right to be uncomfortable around Caleb in return because Caleb isn't their or even just Veth's adopted son in any way, shape or form. Caleb can't even just be Veth's friend to Yeza because as all three of them are uncomfortably aware, Caleb and Veth pretty much conducted what amounts to an emotional affair, intentionally or not. To make matters worse, it continued past Veth and Yeza reuniting and Yeza picked up on it. Hell the rest of the Nein picked up on it.Ā
That Yeza doesn't really stop it says a lot about him as a character both from the idea that he knows how vital their relationship is and doesn't stop them from that comfort (he's a really good guy) and from a perspective that maybe, just maybe, he's not 100% sure who she'd pick if asked (Yeza lacks confidence in a similar way Veth herself does).
This is further complicated as Veth canonly doesn't even know who she'd picked if asked, having flip-flopped on the subject herself everytime it came up (once saying she wouldn't be separated from Caleb only to turn around and say their time together had to end because she had to go home to her family).
Yeza and Caleb's discomfort comes from this place of "this man is me in her other life" and "he's as vital to her as I am" and "I'm not used sharing that importance". It comes from a tenuous balance where both men know "if I rock the boat, one of us is drowning and I don't want that for either of us but more importantly, I don't want that for her".
My original post was hinting and joking about this "yet something" because while no, Caleb didn't have sex with Veth, many people would argue what Caleb and Veth did have was in a way, a bigger betrayal in a marriage. Yeza would probably be more comfortable around Caleb if it had just been sex then what it actually was and in someways still is.
weaponizing caleb in the vethsweep is so funny because itās 100% true. no Caleb would not want to fight veth. Yes caleb wants veth to be the best wizard she can be. He was absolutely enamored when she took a level in wizard. You cannot disprove that Caleb would want this
Thinking about Caleb āI-use-peopleās-full-names-to-show-intimacyā Widogast and the way he calls Veth āVeth the Brave.ā Itās not all the timeāitās rarely used, actually, saved for specific moments, only when heās using the fondest of tones, with the most admiration, and how calling her that is more intimate than just āVeth Brenatto.ā Because Veth the Brave is both of her identities. Itās Nott and itās Veth, itās their co-mingling, itās her in her entirety. Veth the Brave. Thatās why itās so intimate, because he is speaking to all of who she is
i know the transformation doesn't work here, but there is something so desperately intimate about caleb, shaky with nerves, circling nott while she's disguised as veth so he knows what she looks like at every angle, preparing himself to recreate her entire body with his hands and his magic
