[id: a digital painting of caleb and nott from critical role, looking up at the stars from the deck of the mistake. caleb, a red-haired human man wearing a brown shearling coat and a burgundy scarf flowing in the wind, carries nott on his shoulders, holding onto her legs with bandaged hands. atop his shoulders, nott, a goblin with her face and ears loosely wrapped in bandages, leans her chin on his head, her long dark green hair whipping in the wind in front of her. they both look up to the sky wearing peaceful, thoughtful expressions. behind them, the sea is dark and calm, with clouds low on the horizon. /id.]
idk if exandria is homophobic enough for veth to spend much time in denial of her bisexuality but I think it would be sooooo funny if she was like. well that feeling I get with jester is just the thrill of mischief. and that feeling I get with beau is just the thrill of competition. and my vivid fantasies about yasha are. uh. its fine.
rlly fascinating phenomenon to me is when a character is extremely popular, and that popularity seems understandable enough because they've got something interesting going on, and then you look at the fandom and realize 99% of their fans don't actually care about engaging with any of the things that make them interesting and instead seem to be fans of an imaginary milquetoast version that exists solely for ship and/or angst content and is so far removed from the canon character they might as well be an unrelated OC at this point
Just a girl being a little goblin
caleb not having a fucking clueee how to interact with yeza for the entire c2 is genuinely one of the best character decisions liam made for him its so funny. its like everytime yeza is in the room caleb has 2 dialogue options and 1 is like say hi to yeza and 2 is like tell yeza his wife is the most beautiful women you've ever met and you would die for her RIGHT NOW and caleb hits option 2 everytime and then sort of scurries away
Pygmalion and Galatea
Caleb jumping in when Nott's giving Fjord shit is so funny to me mostly because like. He literally likes Fjord. Is the thing. It's not like he doesn't like Fjord. She clearly just Activates Something inside of him.
Caleb most of the time: Fjord is a dear companion to me. And one of my closest friends.
Caleb as soon as Nott starts telling Fjord he's a loser and an orphan or whatever:
“She loves you so so so so much. She came all this way to find you!”
(you can find more of my cr fanart at #chekhov-draws-critical-role)
in no particular order and for no particular reason: best examples of fjord and veth fucking with one another
the whole saga of captain button beard, which veth fully realized was him being patronizing and sarcastically played along with, and then repeated and threw back at him in the tunnels to xhorhas, to which fjord not only played along but outright echoed her “this fucker!” line when he did.
the first use of veth’s disguise self being to turn herself into a mini version of fjord, arguably setting off their rivalry forever
the first use of disguise self after fjord regains his powers being to turn himself into a huge version of nott
fjord letting her cross a dangerous river and only then parting the waters, rendering the effort pointless, after assuring her he would do no such thing. (bonus: caleb, ever biased, using her rope anyway).
that time fjord woke her up by gently picking up her while she slept and then fucking dropping her
i will throw you in the lava... you couldn’t
when fjord got swallowed by that worm thing and veth tried to pull him out, failed her strength check, he made fun of her, and she decided to push him back in instead
SOME MORE:
the time veth turned invisible and told caleb to tell fjord that she was dead
and caleb immediately being like “yeah she told me to tell you she’s dead” and fjord just Going With It, dramatically, NO!!! NOT MY GOBLIN!!!
“i know you don’t like me” “i like you!” “oH SaY ThaT AgAiN???”
“hey veth you can just one-shot this trex for us right?” “oh yeah i’ve always had that ability i just never used it” and then fjord’s grin when she falls out of her tree a minute later
fjord: [says something decisive and leaderly] veth: uh huh anyway our leader, caleb,
Pygmalion and Galatea
she had a gun. she used it three times. one shot was a miss. one was aimed directly at her friends ass. only once did it help in battle. she dismantled it and put it back together perfectly with no prior experience and then used the info she got from that to make explosives. she named it Sweet Baby. noone is doing it like her
actually kind of fucked up about the idea of nott being like veth’s ghost. because that is how she conceptualized it, right? when luc asked if she was alive again, she didn’t say yes. she said “i will be.” nott the brave is veth brenatto’s ghost and she knows it
Actually my reason she's my favorite. Veth died saving her family. She did actually die. She actually thinks she's *dead* and the character concept as a ghost in the form of the people that trapped her and her family is a gnarly one. Torture beyond death is just GNARLY.
But it explained everything about her recklessness, her alcoholism, and her catastrophizing.
Of course it's the reason. But the 'perfect storm' of all those aspects feeding off each part of it, is a fucking incredible work of characterization.
+ Bonus
I just. the mental image of your rather timid, alchemist's assistant housewife reappearing literally from the dead with a group of positively unhinged, paranoid friends and being like, "yeah these guys got me into a new line of work. chemistry's good, baby, but killing's better!" literally how are you supposed to react to that
yeza: killing???
veth: only when, when it's a self defense thing. uhhhh, we only--in self-defense
caduceus:
caduceus: that is patently untrue
yeza was, apparently, turned on by this information. he continues to be the weirdest man alive (affectionate)
