Don’t.
Give it a while. It’s new to everyone atm, and it is probably best for the professionals or more technologically competent people to understand it first and make it easier to access for those who want to begin using it.
Exhibit A: You’ve just come from Flash/Photoshop, or you’re about to animate for the first time, you think hell yeah GHIBLI used Toonz!! So you download it, open it and:

“So where’s the brush settings? How do you draw? Onion Skinning? Keyframes? What?! I don’t understand?!” Luckily I’ve figured out where the brushes are and onion skinning, and to edit the playback settings so when i press Enter it plays.
However the timeline is definitely different to people not familiar with animation.
This is a dope sheet, which is what nearly every traditional animation studio used back then, and (i’m assuming) Ghibli still use now. It’s not just in 2D, it’s essential for animations to get your timings for the layers including expressions, colours, sounds, cameras and everything timed perfectly right. By looking at Toonz so far its layout is roughly based off that, and of course Ghibli would be used to this because they are primarily a traditional animation studio. For people with pencil and paper, pegs to hold it down over lightboxes, that kind of stuff, REAL traditional animation.
This won’t be familiar to nearly anyone just starting animation or without knowledge of it, so that’s why I wouldn’t recommend jumping right in.
This program seems to be more for cleanup for animation than actual from-scratch animation. I’m not saying you can’t do that! But it seems to be what it was made more for, seeing as you can scan traditional drawings into it frame-by-frame, then colour them and cleanup any mess.
There IS a version of Toonz known as Harlequin which is pretty similar, but as I said, this has JUST come out, so it wouldd be much better to wait for the professionals for figure it out <3 Also, considering it is Open Source, programmers can edit the source code to potentially make the program more user-friendly!
tl;dr, yeah I know Ghibli uses this and you’re SO excited to jump in, but it’s very early days, things are confusing, and everyone is just slowly stepping into new territory, so give it a while before you rush in and end up too confused and angry to know what to do or breaking anything.

ATTENTION STEVEN UNIVERSE FAN ARTISTS!
Hey gems! Good news! I am putting together a Steven Universe fanbook titled Together Breakfast! Submissions will be open for review until Sunday, August 30th, 2015.
COMPENSATION:
Each contributor will be paid in books. Artists will receive 5 copies of the book as compensation no matter what, but more out of my little pocket would hurt, so this is how funding will work:
Pre-orders will be open before printing, and each pre-ordered book will allow us to print one extra for contributing artists. So if we sell 10 pre-ordered books, we get 10 more for ourselves. These books will be divided up among the contributors at no cost. Artists can also purchase more books at print cost + shipping.

What are the specs?
The book will be 8.5” x 11”.
Full page submissions only.
Full color. Please work in CMYK! If you work in RGB, your colors may print differently.
Don’t forget about working in 300 dpi!
1 or 2 submissions per person. We will do a limited number of 2 page spreads, which will count as 1 submission. If you want to submit a comic, they have a 3 page limit and count as 1 submission.
Portrait orientation, unless you are approved for a spread.

When does the work need to be completed for the printing of the book?
Monday, November 30th, 2015.
Can there be adult content?
If you wouldn’t see it in the cartoon or comics, it shouldn’t go in the book.
Can I work with others?
Is someone writing your comic? Are you coloring a friend’s inks? Totally fine! Each work counts as 1 submission. Please have 1 person submit the final work, and be sure to credit the parties involved.

I’m really, really sorry to ask, but my family and I really need this.
I’ve been fighting tooth and nail to not post this here because doing this terrifies me to the core. It’s taken several friends to calm me down and convince me to ask for help here when I’ve been too scared to do so. Recall a while back I asked for emergency commissions because things got super bad for my family and I? It got better for a time, but now it’s pretty much back to being pretty bad. Bad as in if we can’t get something done soon(a little under two weeks soon), we’re pretty much homeless and we absolutely cannot let that happen. My dad has had a Gofundme up for almost a month now and while we have gotten some donations, 90% of that has went to bills, food, and medication for my mother. We’ve practically sold everything we absolutely could to get some form of money into the house and we’ve all been tirelessly looking into finding some form of income to hold us till we can do something else.Our landlord can only be patient and let us stay without paying for so long. It’s honestly a goddamn miracle it has not happened yet. He’s a good man and I don’t begrudge him at all. So please, if you can help that would be great! If you can’t, that’s fine. The fact you’re willing to read this makes me a little less stressed out.
