And that is a wrap everyone!
Since we are not planning to do individual app reviews, we decided to put together a list of common issues that we saw in applications. This is by no means an exhaustive list, but it is a list of the most common issues that we had when choosing a roster!
1: Over Explained or Unexplained Characters:
This was a major problem we saw both in longer and shorter applications. Some longer applications would meander and we would get overwhelmed with the amount of detail, which could get to a point where it was unnecessary. On the other hand we were also met with applications where we were left simply not understanding who the character is or what motivates them because details weren’t elaborated on. This isn’t to say that you can’t go into detail or you can’t be brief, we’ve seen amazing apps for both characters with full narrative backstories and brief concept-style applications but a balance needs to be struck!
2: The handling of sensitive topics:
Sensitive topics in a character’s backstory was by no means grounds for exclusion - however, we are looking to see how well you can explain these issues and the impact they have on the character in question. With some apps, we felt that sensitive issues were included to give “more interest” to the backstory and didn’t appear to have a lasting impact on the character’s psyche, while others went into detail on the issues themselves in a way that didn’t further our understanding of how they affected the character, but rather focused excessively on the nature of these topics. We aren’t looking for an entire psychoanalytic paper, but we do want to see some exploration of the impact sensitive issues have on a character going forward.
3: The handling of medical conditions:
In essence, giving a character a medical condition/disability without elaborating on what it entailed. We are looking for, at the very least, an explanation on what the disability is and how it affects the character, but more often than not found it just being passively mentioned without any elaboration. We are also looking for an explanation on medical conditions that doesn’t just relate to how it might affect them in the killing game, but also how it impacts them socially or physically.
4: Disconnect Between Personality and Backstory:
Sometimes, we were presented with a personality that did not appear to arise out of the backstory - or there were snippets of the nature of the character mentioned in the backstory we did not see in the personality. Because of this, we did not get a solid sense of who the character was or what their personality was like aside from surface-level brushstrokes. We don’t expect you to go into every detail of your character’s psyche, but especially if there appear to be inconsistencies, we were not able to get a solid handle on what a character was like.
It’s exciting to draft concepts for your characters - and we can understand the desire to create your own or put a new spin on an existing supernatural being. However, with some apps, we could not get a sense at all for what their species/abilities were like. Often, there was no elaboration about the abilities or nature of their species, to the point we were unsure when it came to what to expect in-game. Other times, characters with powers and abilities had little elaboration put into their capabilities. This also applied to elements that were presented in backstories without a clear explanation as to their nature.
6: Excessive NSFW Elements:
We understand that it happens IRL, but for some applications, the role that NSFW elements played in the backstory became, at some points, unavoidable without adding much to the overall understanding of the character. We didn’t necessarily turn characters away because such topics were included, but if there is a large amount of explicit content, then we felt less comfortable with the way they were depicted and how that would translate to the game itself. This also included backstories with sensitive topics such as abuse that didn’t appear to have lasting repercussions on the characters or went into a large amount of detail about.
7: Assumptions Regarding Linked OCs:
We saw a number of linked OCs that had an issue where the muns assumed that the OCs would get in together and the OCs had to get in together to work. These OCs could not function as standalone characters and we had a very difficult time when it came to roster balancing with these characters, as some were practically “joined at the hip”. We understand that the ideal situation would be for both characters to get in, but we did ask that linked ocs work as individuals - oftentimes, they were so intertwined that one was unable to work without the other.
OOC comfort comes first no matter what, and some hopefuls simply have irreconcilable differences. When it came to roster balancing, often we chose the character that would fit the best with the established cast - and we understand that conflict leads to difficult situations but also wished to provide the best OOC environment we could. Other times, we were informed of OOC behaviors we felt were antithetical to the group environment and the rules we had set out - when we know of behavior that goes against our established guidelines, this is not something we wish to see in our group environment. Our main priority is the comfort and safety of our players, so this was a point we emphasized when it came to our decisions.
9: Simple Roster Balancing:
By the end of choosing the roster, we were really splitting hairs and going back and forth on which characters to choose. There were some great applications that we rejected simply because another character already filled the “niche” that that character would have in the roster.
We hope that this was helpful, and we wish everyone the best of luck with their OCs in the future!.
