Even in the early days of the Industrial Revolution the captains of industry at least had a sense that the products they made were good and could be sold at a reasonable price. There was some virtue to their ambitions even if they neglected the labor aspect (and also being cutthroat and sometimes unethical). Hershey wanted to make a good chocolate bar using real milk. Anheiser Busch wanted their customers to be able to enjoy a uniform, and safe experience while drinking their beer so they developed sterilized cans instead of kegs. They at least envisioned the common man in their dreams of becoming wealthy. Today, we have little to none of that virtue in capitalism. We have auto makers who don’t give a shit that most people can’t afford their cars because rich assholes buy them by the dozen. We have AI companies that rush to build their data centers and integrate their system into every aspect of our lives yet refuse to invest the time and energy into creating safe and reliable products. We literally have technology destroying technology.
