THE WILDFIRE PROJECT
London, 1965. On the outskirts of the city, Tyrion Lannister is hard at work in the Stark-Tully Research Laboratory. Known only to the public as the Wildfire Project, the experimental technology is seen as Britain’s best bet against the threat of nuclear war. Early tests seemed promising: the atoms, wen split, glowed a fierce green, and subjects exposed to low amounts of radiation experienced no negative side effects. But on a clear afternoon in late April, Tyrion decides to take his experiments further than ever before. However, his calculations prove to be incorrect; all the atoms in the chamber split and ignite, hundreds upon hundres, producing a blast the inhabitants of London will remember as a flash of brilliant green against the southeastern sky, promptly followed by a shockwave that seemed to destroy everything it came in contact with. Of course, some won’t remember it at all. Those closest to the blast were instantly killed, disintegrating into carbon before they even had a moment to register the trauma. Others were crushed under the weight of their falling houses and store-fronts, others have just disappeared, presumed dead. Hundreds are injured and burned and blinded. The entire city is contaminated with radiation, which, while proving harmless in small doses, has devastating effect in large quantities. Finding clean water and food is difficult for even those from the best families, while the working class have no chance at keeping themselves radiation-free. A quarantine has been put in place and the city deemed a containment zone, to keep the disastrous effects from spreading throughout the rest of England. Those within the walls are simply trying to survive, and find a way out.
