A Burst of Deep Sea Fireworks: A Rare Jellyfish Filmed by the E/V Nautilus
WHAT ARE THIS?! Fossas look like a cat-dog mix, but they’re actually related to the mongoose. In spite of these adorable and innocent-looking eyes, fossas are carnivorous and love to feast on lemurs. bit.ly/FerociousFossas

Australian spotted jellyfish (Phyllorhiza punctata)
Phyllorhiza punctata is a species of jellyfish. It is native to the West Pacific from Australia to Japan, but has been introduced widely elsewhere. It feeds primarily on zooplankton. P. punctata generally can reach up to 50 centimetres in bell diameter, but in October 2007, one 72 cm wide, perhaps the largest ever recorded, was found on Sunset Beach, North Carolina. True jellyfish go through a two-stage life cycle which consists of a medusa stage (adult) and a polyp stage (juvenile). In the medusa stage male jellyfish release sperm into the water column and the female jellyfish gathers the sperm into her mouth where she holds the eggs. Once fertilization occurs and larvae are formed they leave their mother and settle to the ocean floor. Once on the bottom a polyp form occurs and this form reproduces asexually by “cloning” or dividing itself into other polyps. Jellyfish can live for up to five years in the polyp stage and up to two years in the medusa stage(active).

In a shocking incident, a five month old #leopard cub was found trapped in a wire-snare on the Delhi-Gurgoan border. The poachers had smashed her left fore limb and she was in extreme pain. Her condition is slowly stabilizing, and she’s still under treatment at our centre, with all the love and care of our staff directed at her.

Gentoo penguin (Pygoscelis papua)
The long-tailed gentoo penguin is a penguin species in the genus Pygoscelis. The gentoo penguin is easily recognized by the wide white stripe extending like a bonnet across the top of its head and its bright orange-red bill. Gentoos reach a height of 51 to 90 cm, making them the third-largest species of penguin. Gentoos breed on many sub-Antarctic islands. The main colonies are on the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, and Kerguelen Islands. Gentoos live mainly on crustaceans, such as krill, with fish making up only about 15% of the diet. However, they are opportunistic feeders. In the water, sea lions, leopard seals, and killer whales are all predators of the gentoo. The IUCN Red List lists the gentoo as Near Threatened, due to a rapid decline in some key populations which is believed to be driving a moderate overall decline in the species population.
