Fun fact, my username is based on a dumb image I made one night that's just will wood's normal album but with soos from gravity falls, current pfp rn too :3

Current obsession (rambling):

Sherman Pines from gravity falls, I love him so much, my creature, I give him trauma. I named his son (Dipper and Mabel's dad) Daniel. I decided it was best to send Sherman to war in my headcanon world as I want him to be quite traumatized and mentally ill, like his brothers. He's a great guy, really, and he's amazing and collects stamps, and he fishes, and I headcanon him as the older brother but still with the time anomaly stuff, so like he's vaguely late 50s to early 80s but everyone in the family is just like "yep, everyone knows he's definitely the oldest sibling! Why wouldn't he be?", but honestly if I had to give him a concrete age it would be around a decade older than the Stan twins. I feel that out of all of his family he's the least likely to commit a crime, and would probably try to talk other people in his family out of committing crimes and other kinda similar stuff, I think he'd have big issues with scamming people and not shut the fuck up about it, basically he's no fun and a total loser/j. I also like the idea that he looks a lot like his mom. And, and Sherman is amazing and I love him and I need to design his wife because I imagine they are a very happy joyous couple, so he needs his wife.

OKAY so my rendering is best when i have a background to draw onto so im just gonna snatch a background from steven universe for this

tutorial under the cut since this might be long

here we have the humble flat colored steven. shut up steven, it is midnight and i am sick. i need something to do.

FIRST ORDER OF BUSINESS!!! copy your background, clip it to your character, set it to multiply and blur it to shit. should be almost one uniform color if not completely mixed

considering the fact that the light is BEHIND steven, this works for me! a bright light directly behind an object or character will make them look darker. but depending on your background you might have to change the opacity or even skip this step completely. go with what looks good to you!!

MY next step since this is lizard boy is rendering his corrupted eye. that consists of a dot around the size of his pupil [also the same color], motion blurred, and set to color dodge along with some airbrushed bits around the eye and should look something like this [i also add lighting to bits around it but i took the screenshot before i did that so whatever]

you're gonna want to copy that motion blurred layer [the line] and clip it to the lineart set to normal mode. lighting should go over your lineart. so if you haven't already, do yourself a favor and throw all your lineart into a folder!

now back to the part that's actual relevant- here's where you lighting. basic blah blah cell shading whatever set to add. for this specific drawing i used the yellow from the sky and that turned out nicely but you're gonna have to experiment with lighting colors [in fact this was my second choice for the color]

now! this is a huge tip for you! you can get a LOT of mileage out of the same lighting layer just by doing different things to it. copy your lighting layer. motion blur it. adjust both layers' opacity as necessary. motion blur is SO useful

LOOK AT THAT. also i'd recommend experimenting with colors here because i changed just the motion blurred layer to a bright orange and as you can see he is fucking GLOWING. also this is where you wanna paste that layer on top of the lineart it adds some nice glow

now that you have eight layers for lighting you can start shading!!

quick tip; warm lighting makes for cool shading and vise-versa [with some exceptions!]. since this is yellow, a warm tone, i'm gonna pick a bluish color for the lighting

since the light is behind him i don't think there's much i can do for the shading that wasn't already done in our first step. so now you want to perform a similar process as with the lighting- copy it and blur it. i just used regular blur here. also still adjust opacity as necessary you will have to do a lot of opacity adjusting to get it to look right

andddd there you have it!! a fully rendered steven!

you can optionally throw on a gradient of lighting/shading colors set to whatever layer mode looks good to give it some extra oomph

for the record though that gradient layer is this set to divide so you just need The Intuition for it

if there's anything i didn't cover that you're wondering about please ask! i had a lot of fun making this tutorial and i'd love to explain more :]
