I’ve been collecting found sounds around campus for my Sound in Site: Performance & Installation class, and also just for fun. A few weeks ago I was alone in the Longmeadow kitchen, and the faucet was dripping in a strangely melodic and rhythmic pattern. Long Weekend(~!~)

As the mountainsides turn from green toward patchwork reds, yellows, oranges and browns, the students at the college have a brief midterm respite. It’s an extra day on either side of the weekend. It’s an extra-long weekend. It’s Long Weekend. It’s here.

A lot of students end up leaving campus for Long Weekend--some go home, some go to friends’ homes, some go on li’l road trips... we took a poll of this shift in the office to see what people’s plans are.

Ash: staying here, but going on some day trips to Boston and Burlington, both for the first time!

Jacqui: house-sitting for a faculty member/friend in the area.

Katie: going on a little road trip to Washington, D.C., with friends; has plans to visit the Postal Museum and friends at school in the area--also, on the way back, Niagara Falls. (Also, reading 200 pages of Middlemarch [thanks, Brooke; this is supposed to be a break{!}])

Nila: a brief overnight trip to Boston, but then coming back to work on pieces for Junior Review (art evaluation for fifth-term students).

Will: staying on campus the whole time. Going to clean his room, watch some movies, write some things, and probably make a furniture/blanket/pillow fort in the common room.

Have restful weekend, long or otherwise! Enjoy the colors before the snow comes!

Bennington Clue

Last shift some of us drank too much coffee and made everyone else play a game! We created ‘Bennington Clue’, an iteration of the beloved game ‘Clue’ and in our version, no one is murdered!  

Objective: Game in which you must be the first to solve the mystery of ‘the plan’ by correctly identifying who you are/what you’re interested in, where on campus it takes place, and what tools you use (how you do it).

Suspects/areas of study: Kagan(chinese and animation)-Fiona(oral transmission and institutionality)-Fann(movement and space)-Jeremy(theater as a moral function)-Jacqui(vocal music composition)-Marina(art and song as a spiritual practice)

Locations: Animation Studio, Symposium, Architecture Studio, Greenwall, Jennings, The Lens, The Library, Dickinson, The Barn

Tools: Pokedex, Black Feminist Book, X-Acto Knife, Script, Banjo, Graph Paper

Last night I noticed that the internet was running a bit slower than usual. I wasn't sure why--my computer's had its fair share of connection issues--but then I realized what time it was. It was ten-thirty at night: Netflix o'clock.

Those lucky few who are done with their finals, as well as those unfortunate many who aren't but have decided to procrastinate, tend to tune in around the same time. I, personally, am going to celebrate the turning-in of my final paper for philosophy by watching this gem tomorrow night with some friends. We're going to set up a projector and a bedsheet in the Woolley common room.

"Knights of Badassdom" features Peter Dinklage '91 and has only recently arrived on Netflix streaming. This is gonna be good.

Hi, I've been pursuing singing and violin as extracurriculars all through high school and would like to continue these things in college. What opportunities are there at Bennington for informal music study or performance?

Hello there friend! You are in good company! Many students engage with music––even if it is not at the forefront of their academic Plans. Are you hoping to continue with lessons, perform in an ensemble, or jam and sing with friends? Yay! As a fellow musician, I can give you the inside scoop!Instrument classes are generally taught one-on-one or in small groups. Faculty member Kaori Washiyama teaches violin and viola classes for students of varying skill level and experience.I am currently in a Beginning Composing class with Allen Shawn, and each week we bring in pieces for Allen and visiting instrumentalists to play in class. One thing I really appreciate about studying music at Bennington is the ample opportunities I have to hear and perform my work in informal settings. In fact, Kaori visited my class on Monday to play our violin compositions! You’ll also have the opportunity to perform at the super-casual Music Workshop; every Tuesday, students and faculty gather in the Dean Carriage Barn to perform, listen, and offer feedback to student works in progress. Additionally, some instrumental classes will culminate in a final performance––in fact the Violin Showcase is tomorrow evening! You may also explore the folk music of North America through Traditional Music Ensemble, taught by the jolly John Kirk! The Ensemble played a contradance last night––what a time to be alive! Look forward to having a grand ol’ time! John also teaches lessons for fiddle. And perhaps you could play in a rock or jazz ensemble––who knows?As for singing, I have found voice classes at Bennington to be extremely cathartic. Like instrument classes, voice is taught in small groups. You’ll warm up and stretch together, chat about your progress, learn healthy technique, and sing for each other. You’ll get to meet biweekly with the pianist to practice singing with accompaniment, and have the opportunity to sing in Music Workshop when you and your teacher feel the song is ready for performance. Next term I’ll be singing in an chorus called World Vocal Ensemble, and we’ll be collaborating with the World Percussion Ensemble to perform pieces! There is also the student group, Sacred Harp, if you are interested in singing choral music with a group of fun-loving friends!If have any other questions, or just want to chat, feel free to send me an email at [email protected]!
