“Hangovers are never worth it, that’s just a lie we tell ourselves to make us feel better.” They took a drink and whipped their face. “That being said, i’m going to drink anyway and absolutely regret it in the morning. Might as well have fun in the mean time ya know.” They take another drink and slam the glass down on the bar.
William lets the alchohol smooth over his throat, leaving a familiar burn to which he happily “Ah”ed at. Yeah, he was going to regret this and he was most likely going to need to have Leia pick him up. He reaches for another shot glass that the bartender is already serving him and raises it in the air. “To poor decisions,” he says and gulps the drink down. “What’s been up? I haven’t seen you in forever.”
devinhuxley:
″No, it does not. It’s kind of good and bad you know, good because if it did you’d be out of a job.” Devin contemplated out loud. “Please? It’s not like I’m planning on giving you an audiobook copy of The Notebook.” She smiled. “You can’t take back offers of free food, they have an official and unspoken no take backs attached to them, “Devin melodiously hummed walking out the door, “yeah, yeah rub it in her face when we’ve actually have the food.” She laughed, rolling her eyes.
Liam grinned, nodding along with her words. “How else would I be able to tip the lovel ladies at Hooters?” He started making his way out of the building, offering is arm to hold onto. The gesture was ironic since Liam was anything but a gentleman with Dev. “Keep it up, Dev and I might be the first one to break that rule... she’s probably off taking pictures of the mayor or something. Do photographers get big awards?”
“Look, I don’t know about you but it’s been a long week of dead ends and cheap coffee. It’s Friday, c’mon ! I don’t have work tomorrow, let’s get fucked up. The hangover will be work it.”
leiadorsey:
“I’ve seen it all. And said it too,” she shrugged with a careless expression. If anyone were to ever doubt that, she’d simply refer them to her exes and friends. “It still fits through the door,” Lei retorted as she reached for another fry, “So I can’t complain.” Biting into the fry, she smirked as she chewed a couple of times. “Exactly how soon is too soon to visit a shelter?”
“Oh shucks, Le you’re going to make me blush,” he exaggerated a touched expression, smacking a hand over his chest and fake pouting. “We’ll see about that by the end of the year.” He sighed after washing down another piece of his hamburger. Kudos to the city for always keeping him well-fed. “Well, shit. We have the rest of the day to get my godson slash goddaughter and to also stock up on dog crap. There’s a PetCo nearby isn’t there?”
devinhuxley:
“Are you trying to to trick me? We live in New York.” Devin laughed, shoving his shoulder lightly as the smile remained on her features. “I’d really love to take that deal, but I think I’ll just get you an audiobook, you can listen in your car on stakeouts, it’ll be more fun than just sitting there.” The blonde insisted. “Normally I don’t, but you’re special, you should consider yourself lucky.”
“Well, I guess the job never ends,” shrugging with a wide smile plastered on his face. “If I listen to an audiobook during a stake out, my whole precinct will hear about it and I will never heard the end of it.” If only his co-workers knew who he hung out with. Devin was the most ironic of them al. Cheerful and optimistic where William was flirtateous and pessimestic. He simply deadpanned, and walked to open te door. “C’mon dollface, let’s get going before I change my mind. Oh shit! I should Snapchat LeLe just to rub the Chinese food in her face.”

the past leaders to the present
“You’re not supposed to see that,” an eighteen year old William said with a sigh. He stood at the doorway of his bedroom with his younger sister on his back. He was currently facing his mother who looked paler than usual. His mother whom had just found the multiple college brochures he had tucked under his pillow when he heard footsteps approaching. He mentally cursed himself for forgetting to put them away in his books or his backpack at least. Somewhere that wasn’t too obvious. Especially when he was well aware of his mother having a knack to tidy up his room whenever she passed by.
Shit. He should have hidden them better. He felt as if an argument approaching would be too much of an understatement. His mom and stepdad has assumed he was planning on attending the local community college with all his friends. But that was the last place that William had wanted to go. Ever since he took a school trip to New York for a weekend with his class in the 9th grade, he had eyes set for that beautiful city. The city full of people, culture and lights. He had fell in love. It was absolutely different from where he was brought up. It was why he adored it so much. Stealing a glance from the local New York newspapers, he had felt how much the city needed more people standing up to bullies. And if that included ensuring that people would follow the law then so be it.
He adored the city never slept. How the city buzzed with life. How there was always something new to learn around each other. One mention of this new profound dream to his “friends” at the time and he was ridiculed. He gushed to his mom about New York and it all it had to offer on the car ride back home. Ever since he saw the way her eyes were distant, small talk filled the rest of the car ride home. He didn’t know what to make of that. Just that whatever was going on in that head of her wonderful mother’s, he didn’t want to continue poking and prodding. Later, William found out that her mother had lost her job when she was quietly crying into his stepdad’s shoulder. He wasn’t as loquacious about his die-hard love for the city after that. He got new friends, smarter friends and stayed quiet about what he wanted to do after high school.
What originally meant to be a small infutation blossomed out into an idea of its own. Just as he had been sure of getting a career in law enforcement, he had been sure about creating a live in New York City - he knew it was all in his path and he was not going to shake it any time soon. The quiet secret had delayed its reveal for far too long. Which is why William suspected that this was payback for not telling his mother sooner or really being the one to tell her at all.
“You want to attend college out of state?” Her mother asked with tears already welling in her eyes, lips quivering. He pressed a kiss against Emery’s head and set her down, “Go help dad with the barbecue, princess.” He only referred to his step father as dad when Emery was present, otherwise it was “Hey Nick.” She had burst into tears when he tried to explain the whole ‘step’ siblings situation to her, thinking that William could no longer be around. So he’d just called him dad to make things less confusing for the little brat. He was happy for his mother when she had met someone and fell in love. He was happy for his mother when she re-married and they moved into their house. He was always happy as long as she was happy. Plus, it meant he wasn’t an only child anymore. He watched his six year old step-sister skip down the stairs with caution then faced his mother. It made his stomach flip just seeing his mother look so… worn out. Her sullen eyes, her messy hair, her quivering lip, he felt useless.
Was this the type of stress he inflicted on his mom?
Liam found himself crossing his arms and leaning against the doorframe. He just stared on, not being able to find the words to explain himself. He pursed his lips then opened his mouth to break the silence but his mother beat him to it. “Tell the truth, Will,” and that shut him right up.Well, quiet any quick of idea of lies but he had decided against it.
It was now or never.
“I don’t want to go to a community college, mom. I know it offers a lot of benefits and it isn’t as bad as people say it is but I’ve been working really hard to get the grades for a four year university and my counselor says I have a pretty good chance of getting some scholarships and into these one school I really like. It’s in New York City and it’s a really great campus where I’ll be offered financial aid and dorm housing. And I know you didn’t like the idea of me going into law enforcement but I’ll be able to take early courses for the police academy starting this semester online. I can find a job easily there so you don’t have to pay for anything. And it’s not such a long drive, just about six hours so whenever you need me to babysit Em, I can just come over. I’m sorry, please don’t cry! It was stupid I won’t leave Virginia then I can just look for Universities here-”
“Honey! Stop! Just.. breathe.”
Just like that, the mood had shifted. He didn’t even notice when it happened but his mother had his arms wrapped around his shoulders, pulling him into a hug. Liam had a habit of getting himself choked up whenever he got excited about something. He dropped his tense shoulders and let himself be pulled back to reality with soft coos and a reassuring hand.
“William, look at me.” He complied, leaning back to face her directly. She looked content and off, with a grin at her lips but her eyes filled with tears.
“I’m not upset.. Sure, I wished you would have at least talked to me about this, I could have helped you. But what’s done is done and besides, I forgot how my son is always in his own little world. I’m your mother and I’m supposed to be here for you. Now that being said, I’m just a little sad that my baby is growing up but I’m a lot more proud, okay? You’re going to this University. From now on and forward, you put yourself first. Us second. We’re fine, we’ll be fine. Stop apologizing for wanting this, for earning this. I am not going to get in the way of your success.”
That little moment between his mother and him changed his life. It felt as if a weight was lifted off his shoulders. He had his mother’s approval and that’s all he needed to pursue his dream. If he was asked, he would recall that day the best day of his life. Nick had grilled some hotdogs and burgers for dinner. Emery had washed the lettuce and had sat right next to her big brother. His mother smiled a little wider and they enjoyed their dinner outside in the back patio to enjoy the last days of Summer. The night had ended with a last minute store run for cheesecake in celebration and Emery sitting them all down to watch Finding Nemo with her. It was nice and it felt right and he was happy.
New York was going to be his home, like he’d planned, and his family was on board with it.
Everything was perfect.
devinhuxley:
“I have read books written by police officers, and fictional police reports?” Devin attempted with a small smile, “But I doubt it’s the same thing, which means books and police reports are not. I’m making a list.” The blonde promised, eyes slightly narrowed as she pointed her index finger at him, but the laughter bubbled in her making her lips curl into a smile. “Someone has to be the smart one. Could’ve been you if you had read more books. It sounds even better because you’re paying.”
“How about this? I’ll take the time to read your favorite book when people stop killing each other,” he snickered. Out of all his friends, only Devin Huxley would make a scandal about the importance of reading. “Is this how you treat someone who just offered to feed you for free? Now whose forgetten their manners?”
leiadorsey:
“Top notch, huh? You got proof of that, Li?” She had to wonder how she ended up being best friends with an absolute loser sometimes, let alone sleeping with him. Lei just shook her head at him, popping one of the extra pickles she asked for into her mouth. “Homicide detective, nowhere near DEA. Besides, you can’t live without me, like it or not.” She leaned back in her seat with her arms folded over her chest. “I’ve owned a dog before, I know what to do… No reasonable person forgets to feed a dog before they leave for hours — Leia Jr? Cute.” She was about to go way off track. “But of course, I mean, New York has plenty of parks and stuff.” She paused for a second before continuing. “They can go outside of the complex for that; there’s small grassy spots everywhere, that’ll do.”
“I would show you but I don’t think you would appreciate the kind of texting that occurs beforehand,” he said with a smug grin. Liam knew that if all comes to fail, then at least he could get himself a nice lay. He shook his head, unimpressed. “Your head’s getting too big.” He took another sip from his drink, narrowing his eyes at Leia as she spoke. “You already made up your mind about Leia Jr. haven’t you?”
leiadorsey:
“You do realize that a scruffy beard doesn’t compare to soft fur, right?” She had to roll her eyes at him; she had to do it twice, actually. “It wasn’t hard, you’re one weird, kinky fuck,” she replied matter-of-factly, stealing one of his fries in retaliation. “I know it’s not worth it, that’s why I only do pot, e and acid.” There wasn’t exactly truth behind the last two, but she wasn’t really lying either. “Thanks, Lance, I really appreciate the support.”
"Whatever. I’ve had top notch reviews from previous encounters about my stubble.” Yeah, of course she knew. He only retorted by taking an exaggerated bite from his burger and closing his eyes and moaning as he did so. “You know your best friend is a cop, right? You’re lucky I’m not a snitch,” he tsked, washing down the food with a sip of his soda. "Look, Le, think about it. What if you get called into the work at like a random time in the morning and forget to feed Leia Jr? Can you walk it every night? Where is it going to take a shit?”
leiadorsey:
“But do you have a fur coat that I can cuddle into whenever I please? I think not.” The very second Liam took the fry, a scowl appeared on Leia’s face. “You seriously get off on my desire to punch you in the face over food, don’t you?” She took a sip of her drink, shrugging a shoulder in response. “I think so. I mean, there’s a crack addict on every floor and that seems to be the least of everyone’s problems.”
“That’s outrageous. You know damn well I can grow my hair out and with enough patience, I can get a scruffy beard,” he pointed a pathetic glare. “Fuck, you figured out my big turn-on,” he teased. Liam smirked, shooting a wink at her as he chewed. “Don’t be doing crack, Leia. That shit is not worth it. You shouldn’t get a dog. You can barely take care of yourself, let alone a dog.”
leiadorsey:
“… I really want a dog,” Leia mused before taking a small bite out of a french fry, “Like one of those big, fluffy, marble shepherd dogs. Living in my cramped apartment’s sketchy as fuck sometimes, so he’d be the perfect roommate, y’know?” Whether she was high or not was questionable, but regardless, she thought that this was the best idea she’d had in a while.
“That’s insulting, Dorsey. I’d be the perfect roommate,” he scoffed, snatching french fry from her hand to pop into his mouth. Liam had his own meal of course, but he liked the exasperated expression Leia made whenever he pulled that sit. “Does your building even allow pets?”
devinhuxley:
“That’s just sad. How can you stand not to read actual books? The romance, and drama, and the intrigue, and the dynamics… it’s beautiful. You’re missing out.” Devin spoke animatedly, hands moving quickly as the words spilled out quickly. “I don’t… No, I don’t feel like I’m cheating on my job, I love my job and it helps my job to read anything I can get my hands on.” Devin shrugged. “Apparently not all your manners, since you said it though I’m holding you to it. Chinese or Italian?”
“Have you ever read police reports? They’re their own pieces of literature,” he argued. “Some people’s motives for committing a crime are quite creative.” He loved when he was able to get Devin riled up about her passion or her job. A smirked played at his lips, amused by how dorky his friend was. William took one last bite of his apple (the core was only left anyways) and shot it like a basketball into the nearest trashbin. “Smart girl. Fuck, Chinese food sounds so good right now.”
devinhuxley:
“There’s a difference though, isn’t there? Just because I can read more than most people doesn’t mean I’d like to spend all my time reading. I’d like at least 23% to do other things.” Devin smiled, glaring weakly at the fruit in his hand, “Would you at least close your mouth, please?”
“You tell me, junior editor. I haven’t read anything but police reports for the past four years. Tell me this, do you feel as if you’re cheating your job when you’re reading something that isn’t on payroll?” He teased, with a wiggle of an eyebrow. “Sorry, dollface. All my manners leave the door when I’m with you. And when I’m hungry. You down to eat? My treat.”
devinhuxley:
“Or my boss knows she can trust me and believes in me.” Devin replied quickly, an amused smirk on her lips, “I like my theory better.”
“To each their own,” he rolled his eyes. He brought the apple to his lips to take another large, obnoxiously crunching bite. Chewed and swallowed. “We all know you’re perfectly capable of reading like five books a day. No need to show off anymore.”
devinhuxley:
This pile of manuscripts feels more endless than anything else. It’s going to take forever to get through all of these, unfortunately for me “forever” translates into Friday according to my boss.
“Do you want me to say it?” Liam quirked an eyebrow, shooting her a knowing look before biting into his red apple. "Your boss is a dick,” he shrugged as if he was stating a fact.
