She said: ❝Make sure you're looking where you step,
You've a tendency not to notice!
Underneath each of our noses!❞
Name: Introduces herself as Wendalyn Wonderling, real name Poppy Campbell.
Character Title: The Hopeful Wordsmith
Quote: "Our story deserves a better ending!"
Starts with the items "Opus Collection" and "Elegant Feather Pen." Wendalyn has a special crafting tab called "Wordsmithing," which allows her to create Opuses. Each Opus costs a certain amount of sanity, durability from the Elegant Feather Pen, and several other items (which ones depend on the Opus). Opuses can only be read by Wendalyn. If the Elegant Feather Pen breaks, it can be crafted again with Charcoal, a Feather, a Twig, and three pieces of Gold.
Wendalyn cannot create Opuses if she doesn't have the Opus Collection in her inventory. The Collection itself also serves as a mini-chest where only Opuses can be placed. Initially, it has only one slot (Opuses stack up to 10), but it can be upgraded using an Alchemy Engine and Papyrus. At maximum upgrade, it has a 3x3 size.
Which Opuses Wendalyn can write depends on the development of her skill tree, but among their effects are:
Spawning butterflies and flowers
De-aggroing enemies around her
If Wendalyn has low sanity, each Opus read has a chance to summon aggressive nightmare creatures. The lower her sanity, the higher the chance and the more nightmares spawn.
Wendalyn also has a crafting tab called "Floristry." With its help she can create bouquets, as well as upgraded versions of some items. For example, she can create a Beefalo saddle decorated with flowers, which helps tame it faster, or decorate Chester with flowers to increase its health and speed. Bouquets can be used to befriend pigs (saving meat), to tame some animals, and much more.
Wendalyn hates loneliness, so all sanity debuffs (such as darkness and the presence of monsters) affect her much more strongly if there is no friendly creature nearby (a tamed beefalo, a follower pig, Chester).
Wendalyn has never had to work hard or survive much before the Constant, so she gathers resources and crafts items slower than other characters.
She has 120 Hunger, 100 Health, and 200 Sanity.
Wendalyn was born in America, in a suburb of San Francisco, into the family of businessman James Campbell, who managed a chain of flower shops called "Campbell's Carnations & Co." He had three children: an older son, Larian (nicknamed Larry), a middle daughter, Poppy, and a younger daughter, Melissa.
Larry dreamed his whole life of becoming a famous detective, but by age 27, he was only trusted with petty local thefts. Melissa cared little for romance and desired an easy life, so she married a rich man at 18 and moved to England (where her mother was originally from).
The middle daughter refused to do anything except poetry and writing, even though no serious publishing house would accept her. A couple of times, her short stories were published in the local newspaper, but that was it. She and Larry were very close, bonded by having no success in things they're passionate about. Poppy often submitted applications to publishers under his name to avoid discrimination because of her gender. In other cases, she wrote under the pen name Wendalyn Wonderling, as she felt her real name was "unworthy of a talented writer" and "would look terrible on a book cover." Her mother urged her to do something more serious, but she was adamant. She worked the cash register at one of her father's shops, and this job suited her just fine (of course, only as a temporary measure until she achieved literary recognition).
Her mother, Anna, had a rather sensitive and pessimistic character. On top of that, by mid-life, she became seriously ill and spent most of her days in bed. Mostly, when she spoke, she discussed the crumbling economy and gloomy predictions for the world's future. Her father picked up this habit as well, turning from a cheerful man to a person as gloomy as her. This gloominess weighed heavily on Wendalyn, and despite genuinely feeling sorry for her mother, she dreamed of getting far away from her family.
And so, one autumn night in 1921, she sat down at her writing desk in her study and turned on the radio, hoping to get a shred of inspiration or at least lift her spirits. And yet ideas refused to come. Suddenly, the music on the radio stopped abruptly, and a terrifying voice spoke, promising to rid Wendalyn of her troubles and carry her away to a wonderful world that hadn't yet been described in any book. She hesitated, but eventually caved in to the promise of an adventure. A shadowy hand emerged from the radio. Wendalyn shook it, and it dragged her off into the darkness. Wendalyn woke up in the Constant, and there her survival journey started.
Born June 3, 1897. At the time of being transported to the Constant, she was 24 years old.
Believes in fate and zodiac signs. Her sign is Gemini.
On Earth, she was a fan of Wigfrid, and remained a fan even when she went out of fashion.
She visited Wickerbottom's library many times before it burned down.
She was taken into the Constant a month later than Wilson, but due to how time works in that realm, Wilson had already survived a few winters by the time Wendalyn was kidnapped.
Her favorite drink in-game: Soothing Tea. It restores more health and sanity to her.
Charlie once bought roses for Maxwell at her shop (or rather, her father's shop).
She hatched a Tallbird and named it Genevieve the Gentle.
She also befriended a few pigs with the help of her bouquets.
She's good with children, and during the events of Don't Starve Together, she can easily befriend Wendy, Webber, Walter, and Wurt.
She will also befriend Wickerbottom, Wigfrid, and Wormwood.
She would be the first to forgive Maxwell, because technically he didn't deceive her when he lured her into the Constant, and she's glad she got to experience such an adventure (despite all the horrors that happened to her).
