Summary: Amateur writer Hoseok is in a slump. When his friend Taehyung drags him out to another one of his art shows, he can’t help but be intrigued by a peculiar local artist he meets there…

 Here’s something with Hoseok in the writer/english teacher role. Of course, there will be light angst and some smut thrown into the mix.

The first chapter is titled ‘Chicago Boy’ after Ari Lennox’s song (go check it out!). It describes Hoseok from the reader’s p.o.v, although this chapter is in his perspective (idk if that makes sense but yea…)

Chicago Boy

Hoseok’s starting to think he wasn’t cut out for this.

Granted, things haven’t been going great in his life lately, (they weren’t terrible, definitely not great) but for the life of him he couldn’t understand why he couldn’t put thoughts to words and type out the remainder of this scene.

He’d been staring at the computer screen for over an hour now, repeatedly starting a sentence only to delete it moments later because nothing. sounded. right.

An hour in and the most he’d accomplished was one measly paragraph - could three sentences even be considered a paragraph? As an English teacher he felt like he should know this. His grammar? Astounding. Word choice? Phenomenal. But It’s a shame he’d written the same thing just in different words merely five sentences ago.

Hoseok sighed, leaning into the uncomfortable lumps of his sofa cushions and away from the laptop perched on his coffee table.

He was getting nowhere.

You’re six years old when you receive your first paper crane from Kim Taehyung.

Your first year of elementary school is almost over—there’s only two months left until summer break, and you’ve been counting down the days until you are finally free to wake up as late as you want and play with your friends until the sun goes down.

That’s also why it strikes you as odd that there’s a new transfer student, his newly assigned seat right beside yours, being introduced to the class. His eyes are big and wide underneath a fringe of dark brown hair, and he’s cute in the way that all kids are cute—with rosy cheeks, big ears, and a shy demeanour that tells you that he would most likely rather have stayed at his previous school.

After a brief introduction of Hello, I’m Kim Taehyung, he shuffles over and takes his seat. He doesn’t really look at you, keeping his head down as he pulls his notebooks from his backpack. You see that the margins are covered in doodles, little cartoons and make-believe stories etched onto every far corner of the page.

You open your mouth to introduce yourself, but the sound of your teacher’s voice has you facing the blackboard once more. You try not to think too hard about the new boy sitting beside you, gently humming to himself as he doodles butterflies in an open meadow.

At recess, you’re playing with a few friends, doing cartwheels and rolling around on the grass. You’re giggling with your friend, Chaeyoung, when you hear a ruckus happening not too far away.

“Hey! Please, no, give it back!”

Taehyung was so adorable and supportive, even when he’d been hurt. He has plenty of reason to say no and turn away but he doesn’t, even though he’s left behind.

Hi Iris! I was wondering if you have any advice for combatting imposter syndrome as a writer? I love to write for fun but when I read other people’s work and look back at my own, I always feel like it’s too bland and missing something

Imposter syndrome just plain SUCKS and yet it’s a pretty common occurrence for most of us who share our stories. The biggest culprit is comparing our work against the work of others. Your first attempt at a particular plot or technique could be measured against someone else’s fifteenth or even fiftieth attempt. It’s setting yourself up to fail and it’s completely preventable.

There are writers in fandom who have been writing fiction for well over a decade. Some are able to practice writing in some form or another every day. Some practitioners have a stronger grasp of English than others. Some get lucky. Some have incredible beta readers helping them. There are so many factors at play to bring a story together that it’s extremely unfair to yourself to put your work against someone else’s. Even fics that are put forward as a “first fic” are often crafted after years of writing practice. My first fanfic I put out for the k-pop fandom was put out after I had 1) already been technical writing for several years, 2) already put out fanfiction, and 3) published (non-fiction in my primary field of study). In short, my first fic was not my first attempt at writing, by any means; it was simply my first attempt at RPF.

You need to focus on comparing your present works against your older works. Go back to your first fic and think about your writing process. How many times did you edit? How long did it take? Did you sleep on it? Did you rush it? Compare that to your most recent release. Is your newest work better than your first? Did you refine a technique somewhere along the way? Are the paragraphs more rich? The goal should be self-improvement, yes, but the measure of that improvement should be based on your personal growth and not the growth of someone else. It’s very likely that you are getting better at writing as you continue to practice.

I want to touch on the last bit about your story being bland or missing something. Did you arrive at that conclusion before you compared yourself to someone else, or after? That’s really important to examine. If you thought your story was entertaining and fun before and then you uploaded it and changed your mind later, that’s great. That’s where your mind should be and it means you will improve next time. We should always be looking to improve our writing skills. But if you thought your work was bland before you read other people’s works and before you shared it, why did you put it out? Don’t get me wrong, it’s customary to not love one’s work during the first draft, but that’s why we have editing to shape a story into something nice to read.

Hope this is helpful. It sounds like you need to cut yourself some slack. You’re not going to craft a masterful dish of the highest cuisine when you’re just learning how to cook. Give yourself some time to grow in your own practice, taking notes along the way so you can see how far you’ve already come.

Thinking back to where I started 20 years ago… the cringe!!! Even thinking back on stuff I wrote last year, when I first came back after a 5 year drought, it was decent, but obvious I was maneuvering the rough patches of finding my voice again. I feel as though I’ve improved since then. Accepting that my writer’s voice will never be identical to writers I admire, and that my voice is perfectly fine on its own merit… that’s the reminder every day.

The idea of this challenge is that people from all communities come together to gain knowledge, add skills and just have fun with the amazing amount of resources out there. This way, we can all support and motivate each other, whatever field you might be interested in.

Post an introduction with the hashtag #30dol with your goals and expectations for the month (starting June 1st), and what your current level is. (Of course, you can join in later as well, but it’s fun to start a the same time!) In the end, you’ll be able to compare and see how much has changed!

languages (apps like lingodeer, duolingo, lingvist, busuu, blogs like @lovelybluepanda. there are also so many pdfs and amazing websites out there depending on your target language!)

online mass education courses (edx, coursera, skillshare, futurelearn where universities and professionals teach you about their subject - be that astronomy, engineering, ancient greek history, artificial intelligence or medicine!)

social media (learn to take iphone photos for your tumblr or instagram, and here’s a great post by @studyquill on how to start and maintain a studyblr!)

photography (travel street photography, find photographers you admire like annie leibovitz or henri cartier bresson and read about their path, or browse youtube channels like negative feedback which specialize on photography)

creative writing (there are tons of workshops online - you could also try to set yourself a piece or word limit similar to nanowrimo) 

culinary (check recipe websites, or challenge yourself to try one new recipe a day, or dedicate the month to a specific cuisine)

music (learn music production, andrew huang has also made a video on how to start making music here)

film and filmmaking (karsten runquist’s channel is wonderful for film analysis,  learn about cinematography basics here and film history here)

painting (acrylic painting, sketchbook illustration. you could challenge yourself to fill an entire sketchbook/create a piece every day or week, or to improve a specific technique) 

Every resource linked is free (if you click on the links you can get Skillshare for free for two months and cancel anytime), so all you need is some free time and lots of motivation!!

I’m very happy to be announcing this to you all, and will be working on my Japanese for this challenge – so excited to see what you all and I will do and how far we can come!
