Natasha was sure that he was going to say no to Pepper’s offer to go to dinner. After all, he and Tony weren’t the best of friends. While Tony’s over the whole trying to kill him because he killed his parents thing, he was still pretty much pissed. ‘Great. I’ll set the table for five then. See you later, Nat.’ Pepper was her normal, upbeat self. Motherhood looked good on her. Natasha was thankful that they’ve become friends overtime despite the nature of their initial meeting. When the hologram faded, Natasha was able to see the Soldier better. He was pale, tense. He wasn’t like this a couple of minutes ago, what happened? “That’s brave of you.” She said, slowly making her way back onto the couch, sitting closer to him than she was before she got up.
“Then again, it’s just dinner. I’m sure Tony won’t mind.” Now that she was closer to him, she could see the beads of sweat on his forehead. Natasha took her time observing him, making sure he was okay. Maybe going to the lake house would be good for him, she decided. The tension between him and Tony wasn’t as bad as it was before, and Pepper was there. And Morgan was an angel. He needed to have new people in his life, normal people who weren’t her or Steve. If he does act up during dinner, she was confident that she’d be able to do what she had to do to stop whatever. But she had faith in him.
“Well, I’m going to go shower and prepare for the drive up.” Natasha patted his knee as she got up, her eyes still on him, worried. “I’ll meet you at the car in two hours? The lake house is just an hour or so away.”
Bucky’s mind was still a jumble, even the voice--Pepper, he finally realised--was still distant to him and couldn’t hear what she was saying. Soldat. Who would’ve gotten close enough to him that they would address him as such, and the tone it was said in... it was teasing almost, but he wasn’t sure whether if it was the friendly kind. Either this woman had gotten close to him, which was impossible considering who he was, or she was one of the Hydra doctors or scientists that had treated him. He wasn’t entirely sure which he would have preferred.
I’m sure Tony won’t mind. His ears perked up at the name, causing him to finally look over at Nat only then noticing how she had taken a seat closer to him. He fidgeted slightly under her gaze before he played what she had said to him back in his mind. Tony? “Wait what...” Bucky desperately played the last few minutes back in his head trying to recall what they had been saying only to come up with nothing, but from what she was saying and from the tail end of what he had managed to catch of what Pepper said, putting two and two together wasn’t difficult. Fuck. Bucky’s eyes shifted to where she had patted his knee before quickly looking back up at her, giving her a smile when he saw the worried look on her face. “Yeah yeah, that’s... cool I’ll take my stuff back and be back here by then...”
They were going to go have dinner at Tony and Pepper’s. Tony, whose parents he had murdered. By now Tony had come around and stopped blaming him for those deaths, but forgiving and forgetting are two very different things, which he didn’t blame the guy for. It was a shame really because he thought he could have actually gotten along with him pretty well all things considered. But asking the man who had killed your parents, regardless of brainwashing, to be a friend was a bit much. He just hoped nothing would happen tonight, it was just dinner right?
