Intro Post

Hello! I am a guy who wants to post about nerd stuff on here. There's a lot of topics and fandoms I'd post about, so I'm not going to try and list them here.

My username is meant to be pronounced like "william", but starting with "wax" instead of "w".

I don't want to discuss anything you watch or do for sex, though to be clear, I don't count "people of other genders existing" as sexual.

I'm happy to answer asks, unless:

It's about sex, as above.

It's overly personal.

It's sent just to ragebait or annoy me; .

I don't want to.

I go back and edit my posts a lot. I'm not trying to gaslight anybody, but I like making improvements and fixing mistakes in spelling, grammar etc. If you see a post of mine one day, then see it again with an added section or altered wording, that's probably why.

OK but I do genuinely believe we need to push for something like this before it's too late - and not just in digital spaces. We should have the right to peace and quiet from advertising. There should be more limits on how much and where we get advertising because otherwise it'll just become a creep of more and more until every fucking public space is lit with several billboards blasting us with ads, and the walls between spaces lined with ads, and our commutes filled with ads, and local parks sponsored by corporations to offset the cost of local councils, and so on and on and on and on. No. I need quiet. I need spaces where ads cannot touch me.

There are places working on it! Here's some:

Grenoble, France, in 2014 banned any new billboards and took down the city owned ones in a step towards de-advertizing public spaces. They swapped out the billboards with trees btw!

The city of Nantes in western France has recently banned most electronic billboards, dismantling 110 in one night. The municipality is also cutting digital advertising in shop windows and on the public transport system. It’s also banned all advertising near schools. Which is apart of Frances over all goal to reduce visual noise and light.

In 2009, Chennai, India prohibiting billboards, digital banners and placards in public spaces.

São Paulo Brazil created a law "Lei Cidade Limpa" (Portuguese for clean city law) in 2006

Several states, namely Maine, Vermont, Hawaii, and Alaska have banned Billboards and have been working on other electronic ad bans.

So just know these kinda policies are possible! Whether your in Europe where the UN is working on anti-Ad legislation, in the US, or South America!

Someday I would want to do a deep dive into why cosmere fans (writ large, not about any artist in particular) are so bad at making Shallan and Adolin especially as anything but white, and yet (again, on average) everyone has agreed to make Jasnah darker-skinned and Renarin East Asian.

I mean, I'm pretty sure it has to do with unconscious bias. Racism and colourism permeates society so it's kind of hard to avoid. I invite you to take a moment to consider.

It's easy to see how a character that's been de-masculated by Alethi society because of his epilepsy, and is quiet and shy, is getting drawn as Asian. And not just Asian but short and exceedingly slim, in soft uwu styles. Compare to art of his brother and father, which tends to skew white. Canonically, Renarin is leeky. So yeah, slim, not as tall as the tallest men on Roshar, but it makes me 😒 when he is drawn so tiny and soft. It draws on stereotypes of East Asian men as small and feminized; these depictions don't even reflect his character. In canon, Renarin is trying everything he can to be masculine while staying true to who he is. He's training and studying. He's putting his life on the line in battle. He has Shardplate! And yet I have never seen one piece of art of him in battle or in his Shardplate. So yes, he has epicanthic folds, but he is not tiny or feminine (if you're going for canon Renarin. And even if you're not please consider what stereotypes you may be drawing from when you are feminizing him).

Meanwhile Jasnah (outwardly cold, aloof, Strong Woman who is incredibly emotional underneath) is often drawn with medium brown skin. I'm not saying this is wrong! I'm just saying that the people who are generous with making a tan-skinned character brown are not (on average) drawing her brother, mother, or father that brown. It makes me ask why is it so easy to characterize Jasnah in particular as brown-skinned? Is it because there's a stereotype of brown-skinned women being Strong and Cold and Mysterious and Exotic?

Which brings us to Shallan. She's a favourite character for white female fans to project on to. She's even described in canon as having red hair and pale skin which every white person seems to read as "Irish". However, no one in canon comments on her Shin eyes--that's because she has epicanthic folds like everyone else. Further, light-skinned Asians and Wasians and Arabs and Pacific Islanders also exist. We can do better as a fandom imagining her.

And finally Adolin. The sheer volume of fans who read "handsome" and translate that to "White" is honestly astounding. Find men of colour handsome or die by my sword. 😤⚔️

One of the best ways to avoid these individual character pitfalls (especially regarding the Kholins) is to take some time to imagine the whole family. Variations in skin tone are absolutely normal and expected in a family, but thinking about the family as a whole can help bring to the surface certain assumptions you might not consider otherwise. Who inherited which skin tone, and why is it important to you that a character has a certain skin tone? Turn it over for a bit. Try out different shades and facial features. Think about who spends more time in the sun. Look into colourism and learn about stereotypes. Choose these features intentionally.

Just got back from Anime Expo~ Like I mentioned last time, I was debating about going to that Spy x Family music panel. I ended up going since it was at a good time for me to take a break from shopping.

The professors who hosted it were really knowledgeable about music and gave good insight into how songs and background music in SxF uses various music genres. I learned a lot - felt like I was back in school 😅 Here are some slides:

I also got to see Saori Hayami (voice of Yor) at the Demon Slayer panel! She did some live dubbing for Shinobu (the character she plays in Demon Slayer) which was awesome to experience. Photos weren't allowed in the panel unfortunately, but the official account shared the group photo they took at the end (I found myself in the audience, lol).

Not much SxF at the expo this year, which makes sense since there hasn't been anime news lately. I did find this cool papercraft display though (not sure why some are in front of the Bleach sign, haha).

Also, just a reminder that my post about tomorrow's new chapter will be delayed. I'm looking forward to it though!
