the complete and utter erosion of fandom boundaries wrt popular culture makes me all the more weary when it comes to outrage over journalists mentioning (or, yes, even linking to) fics in articles. of course they're talking about fics. the fandom is compiling public rec lists on twitter, with links and screenshots. people are quote tweeting official accounts making jokes about showing hole. book clubs are arranging trips to NHL games, to which they'll bring custom heated rivalry signs. when your fandom is conducted aloud, publicly, in the spaces where the rest of popular culture and its reporters exist—such as twitter—it should come as no surprise when it's treated like just another facet of the pop culture moment. that's what it is. fandom is mainstream now. I don't know if we can beg for special protections against being pointed at and talked about by non-fandom-goers while also acting with blatant disregard for Everyone Else Watching. when you conduct fandom on the same sites that the show runners, the actors, the media exist on, is it truly a shock when it's noticed? have these people, who are not part of fandom ecosystems, been shown any indication that this sort of activity is ostensibly supposed to be "private" and "off limits"? or have they seen the twenty thousand new accounts dissecting every inch of every episode and every movement of every actor while excitedly passing around links to explicit fan fiction and gone "oh, this is part of pop culture now, and fair game to discuss?"

"ilya is a wag" "ilya is a wife guy" sure sure sure fine but i do think the operative tension that's interesting in their interactions with even the most well-intentioned straight people around them would be the way the predominant cultural scripts for relationships in their social world just don't apply to them. like to a certain extent scott and kip are easier for people in their circles to wrap their heads around because regardless of whatever actual dynamics are happening in scott and kip's relationship people can assign kip the role of girlfriend in their minds and sleep easier. much harder to do with shane and ilya. and this should be awkward. it should be uncomfortable and confusing. hayden's built a red thread conspiracy theory board in his mind trying to figure out which of them is more masc and it's slowly driving him mad
