The party of heroes storms through the front gate of the dark lord’s castle. Expecting to face an army of evil minions, they instead find themselves barging in on a family gathering. The dark lord is celebrating his 4 year old daughter’s birthday.
“Ah, heck yeah!” Mari screams, tossing her shoes with the others piled by the door and sock-sliding to the birthday girl. “I knew I got the date right! Here sis! I got you a human skull!”
“Mari, did you seriously derail the entire quest to come to your sister’s birthday party? Not that she isn’t important, but we need to fight your father or his boss.”
“One: Dad always gets double chocolate extreme cake and plain vanilla cake for the softer people. Two: Dad’s boss sucks and I think it would be a really fun birthday game to go and take him down with the family.”
“... have you sung yet?”
“We were going to do that just after presents,” the Dark Lord told the heroes.
“Then let’s go destroy that boss!” The party of toddlers and preteens cheered, their parents laughing as they pulled out axes and swords - all dulled and small - and handed them to the children. The lead hero pulled his teammate aside, watching with her as the party moved towards a giant set of gates.
“Next time, Mari, just tell us what’s happening. Even if it’s two minutes before we open the door, tell us.”
“Alright. But you have to stay for the piñata. And if you get the golden toy, you get to wear the Crown of Darkness.”
“Deal. Also, what is-“
“It’s a crown made up of black crayons. I made it when I was two and the tradition stuck.”
