The drive to the auction had been quiet. Kit wasn’t much of a talker and Sam it seemed didn’t feel the need to fill the silence. Mariah had gotten the sting of the taller Winchester’s thoughts most of the day, So Kit was very much aware of how he felt about them. Even if it seemed like he had warmed up a bit. Still, she had to admit Sam’s stone silence was better than the bedroom eyes Dean was throwing at her sister. And of course Mariah was doing the same.
With a sigh, Kit parked her ‘69 corvette and slid from the front seat.
“I like your taste in music,” Sam commented. Kit raised an eyebrow. Sam just chuckled and said, “It’s nice to listen to something different. My brother is stuck in the seventies when it comes to music.”
“Oh goddess! I actually feel sorry for you.”
Sam smirked. “It’s not always bad. It’s just good to get a break.”
They made their way into the warehouse, still talking. Kit smirked as well. “I’m sure Mimi is getting a kick out of that.”
Kit shrugged. “Rock? Yes. But not a lot of the classics. She likes the same stuff I do.”
Conversation ended then. Their part of the plan was to stay to the shadows till the auction started then sneak away to burn the heart. It had been suggested to try an actually buy the dammed thing, but Mr. Rossi wasn’t an idiot. All purchases had to be in cash and money shown before the item was even brought to you. That left Mariah to do what she did best and play the guy like a fiddle and Kit to shine in her skills.
Out of habit, she let her eyes search for her sister. Ever since they had been force from their lives back home it had been them and only them. Having these brothers around seemed like a good idea at the moment but it still set her on edge. Kit didn’t spot Mariah or Dean in the crowd. They had arrived late since they didn’t feel the need to socialize when the whole purpose was to salt, burn, and dip.
“We should take a look around. See the best ways to get to where the items are being kept,” suggested Sam.
Kit nodded. “I’ll go this way. Meet in the middle?”
Sam nodded. Kit moved through the crowd, keeping her eyes out for security and exits. She found herself buy the stage where top artifacts were being displayed. The appeal for such things kind of baffled her. She knew the benefits of studying such things but just to have it sit in a case to say you have it seemed pointless.
A flash of red light caught her eye. A guest had asked to take a closer look at one of the items. A necklace with an inch long tear drop ruby accented with diamonds and what Kit believed to be smoothed obsidian beads in between the links in the gold chain. An aid had carefully removed it from the case and was holding it up to the light. Symbol dances around as the light was reflected through the ruby. Her heart stopped.
“Now this peace was found in a temple devoted to Kali, the goddess of destruction,” the woman was explaining. “The necklace has been depicted with the goddess herself wearing it. We believe the symbols that have been etched inside the gem itself are a form of ancient Hebrew.”
That wasn’t Hebrew. As part of their training, Kit and Mariah had learned several languages to aid in spell casting. Those symbols were from a language that only she herself had mastered. And the words she had been able to glimpse didn’t sound friendly.
Mariah! She called out with her mind. The boys may be wearing anti-telepath charms but Kit sure wasn’t. Mariah, I need you.
What’s wrong? The smooth sound of her friend’s mental voice filled her head.
Come to the stage. There is something you need to see.
Sure thing. I need to get away from Mr. Control Freak anyway.
Aw! Is your crush making you mad?
Shut up! That is so middle school.
Kit chuckled to herself. The necklace was placed back in its case and the couple that had been admiring it gone. She studied it closely. With her Witch Sight she could see some kind of aura inside the gem. An aura she hadn’t seen before. The energy was extremely light. Lighter than even Mariah’s.
Mariah floated up the steps and over to her. “What’s wrong?”
Kit tapped the glass case. “This necklace. When it’s put in light it projects symbols.”
Mariah bobbled her head. “And?”
“The symbols are Enochian.”
Mariah’s eyes flared. “You’re sure?”
Kit gave her a smug look. “Who is the only one that can read angelic script?”
“You. Yeah I get it.” Mariah sighed and tucked a curl behind her ear. “What did it say?”
Kit shrugged. “I only caught a glimpse. But I’m positive that the words destruction and slave were in there. It also was found in the goddess of destruction’s temple.”
Mariah stared at the necklace. “The energy doesn’t seem dark. Opposite actually.”
“I know, but I don’t trust humans to have an Enochian necklace that talks about slavery and destruction.”
“Point made. Alright, handle it.”
“Should we tell your boyfriend about it?” Kit asked mockingly.
Mariah’s cheeks pinked and puffed out. “He’s not!” She took a breath. “I can’t with you.” Mariah looked over her shoulder at the crowd. “We can handle this. If it’s a hexed object it should be handled by witches any way.”
Kit nodded. “Gotcha. I’ll snatch it with out Giant knowing.”
Mariah flinched at the comment. Dean must have caught it because his eyes turned dark and he asked, “What’s wrong?”
Making her voice as calm as possible, Kit replied. “Nothing you need to worry about, hot stuff.”
I got it covered. Don’t be so obvious. She quickly made her exit and headed to find her Winchester while Mariah handled hers.
Sam was waiting by a table lined with hor’ dourves. “I found a way in but it has two guards,” he told her.
“I’m sure Mariah and Dean will make a decent distraction,” she replied.
Just then, Kit heard shouting from the middle of the room. Dean had Mariah tucked behind him with an arm partially on her waist while glaring and shouting at who she believed was their host. Mariah was gripping the Winchester’s arm, pleading with the two men. Not the original plan but I guess.
The guards that had been watching the exit her and Sam needed quickly made their way through the cluster of people to break up the altercation. Kit followed behind Sam and they slipped through the door unnoticed.
It was dark with only the distance flood lights on the ceiling lighting the isles. Shipping containers and wooden crates lined dozens of rows. “This is going to take a bit,” Sam commented.
Kit replied, “Well, let’s get started.”
Sam pulled a small deceive from his pocket. It started flashing and making odd beeping sounds. He motioned for you to follow him. As you walked the beeping got louder. “What is that?”
“EMF detector. It picks up waves that ghosts and haunted objects give off.”
Kit snorted. “Humans.” She blinked and allowed her Witch Sight to once again take over her vision. Ribbons of energy danced around the vast space. A slight shimmer in the ether caught her eye. “Up there.” She pointed to a wooden crate ten feet ahead.
His little device went wild when they approach the crate. Warnings and signs of do not open covered the wood. The lid was nailed shut and no matter how hard he tried, Sam couldn’t get it to budge. “I didn’t bring a crowbar,” he sighed. “There must be one around here.”
“Oh please! Move,” Kit growled. With a swift wave of her hand the lid was ripped from the crate, nails and all. Sam had to quickly duck to not get bashed in the head.
He stared at her, baffled. “Telekinesis?”
Sam sighed and shook his head. He mumbled something that she couldn’t quiet make out but she was pretty sure it was along the lines of ‘dammed witches.’ Kit just smirked. Suddenly the temperature in the area dropped dramatically. Their breath came out in clouds. “We have company.”
Sam quickly pulled straw and packing materials from the crate. “Distract her. I’ll torch the thing,” Sam commanded.
Kit almost argued and growled how she didn’t take orders, but just then a woman that seemed only to be wearing a long tattered skirt and elaborate pectoral necklace that barely covered her chest. With out thinking, Kit used her mind to throw Sam back before the ghost could bring down what reminded her of a spear but with a flat curved blade.
The woman screamed and charged at Kit. “Et dejiciam interfectos vestros essentia!” Kit shouted the spell and felt the energy shoot from her fingertips. The specter disappeared into a cascade of silver sparks. “Are you ok, Sam?”
Sam got up stiffly. “Yeah. Just fair warning next time.”
Kit chuckled. “Sure. She won’t be gone for long. Grab the jar.” Sam grabbed the box that was in the crate. “I’ll look around and keep her away from you. Once you open that thing she’ll come out full charge.”
She took off down the isle. It was a ploy of course. Her essence scatter spell would keep that bitch in the ether way longer they need to torch her, but this was the perfect opportunity to grab that necklace.
Mariah, have they sold the necklace yet?
Just now. They are taking to the back office to sign sale papers. Hurry!
Kit pushed her legs to go faster, glad she had decided on sensible flat heeled combat boots instead of heels. She heard voices coming from a platform near the back of the warehouse. She slowed and quieted her steps once she was close. Creeping up the steps, Kit readied the charm bag in her pocket.
Five eyes turned to her as she stepped into the light. And five bodies his the ground after she threw the bag that would knock them out for at least an hour. She carefully stepped over limbs and made her way to the desk. He necklace was secured in a velvet tri-fold case like one you would see at a jewelry store. A pulse of energy cursed through her with a single touch. The ruby glowed for a moment, scattering angelic symbols around the room then just as quickly they were gone.
“Didn’t anyone ever tell you it’s not nice to steal?”
Kit whipped around, arm ready to send the intruder flying. A man shorter than the brothers but still taller than her stood only a yard away. His light golden hair looked wind blown and her was far to casually dressed to be a guest of the auction. “Who the hell are you?”
The man chuckled. “Wrong direction cupcake. That belongs to me.”
He sighed heavily. “Can we just get this over with? I want to back to not giving a shit.”
Kit reaches for the silver dagger tucked into her boot. “To bad for you, I have all night angel cakes.” With the other hand she tried to send him flying, but all that happen was him bowing back slightly like he was absorbing them blow.
“Hmmm. A witch. This will be fun.”
A sliver of panic shot through her. She tried to See him but was nearly blinded by pure light energy. “What are you?”
He smirked. “Someone you definitely shouldn’t tangle with.”
Kit flipped her knife in her hand, still gripping the necklace. “Bold of you to assume I don’t like a challenge.” She sent the table beside her sailing in his direction. It should have hit him dead center but in less than a blink he was gone.
“Missed sweetness.” The voice came from right behind her. She flipped the dagger and jabbed it right where his stomach should be. She heard a grunt then a chuckle. “Now sweetheart, can’t we just talk.”
Kit spun away from his. Her dagger protruded from his abdomen. He stared at her, honey colored eyes staring into shocked umber ones, and simply pulled her dagger from his body. No flinch of pain. No reaction at all.
He examined the blade. “You’re cute so I really don’t want to hurt you. Just hand over the necklace.”
“Hand over the necklace,” she mocked back in a childish voice. “Eat my ass.”
His eyes flared and mouth tightened. “I’m not in the mood to play games.”
“To bad. I like games.” She moved to land a kick where she had stuck her dagger. He once again disappeared. “Not this time.” She spun around was able to hit him square in the chest. He choked and grabbed her calf. Kit tried to pull back but his grip was to strong. Those eyes shifted from golden hazel to a glowing blue. The necklace, still wrapped around her wrist, glowed a bright red.
The man hesitated. “Interesting.” He jerked Kit forward, releasing her leg only to wrap an arm around her waist.
He just smirked and stared at her. She struggled but all that done was cause his to wrap the other arm around her. “You are an fiery one,” he purred.
Kit felt a twist in her stomach. She didn’t like it. “I’ll show you fiery!” She began uttering the words to conjure fire when his lips came down on hers. Since she was in the middle of speaking her mouth was open and his tongue was given free access. Her mind short circuited. Heat spread across her body like a flash fire. She felt dizzy and her eyes drifted shut. Before she knew what was happening, she was kissing him back.
“Kit!” The sound of Sam’s voice shouting her name barely registered. Her assailant, however, was quick to gather his wits.
He broke the kiss. “Damn Winchesters.” A rush of air swirled around Kit. The warmth was gone and so was her support. She stumbled and gripped the table she had thrown. Confusion quickly turned to anger. That bastard!
Off in the distance, Sam shouted her name again. He was starting to get concerned. The petit witch was no where in sight and they need to get out of there.
“Stop!” Sam jerked to a halt at the command. A burly looking guard in an all black suit was heading his way fast. Sam braced himself, ready to fight. There was a loud thud and the man dropped like a rock. Kit stood behind him with what Sam thought was a plank from a crate. Her chest was heaving and her eyes were filled with anger.
She glared at him. “Fine! Is it done?”
Sam followed behind her. He worried it would be hard to find his brother and Mariah but they were waiting for them as they renter the main room.
“Everything good?” Mariah asked.
Sam nodded. “Salted and burned. Saw her flare up myself.”
“Good,” Dean said. “Now let’s bail.”
“Especially before the cops show up,” Mariah said off handedly.
“Cops?” the brothers asked in unison.
Mariah smiled. “You didn’t think I would know about an illegal auction and not report it, did you?”
Before they could respond, Kit growled. “Come on. Let’s go.”
The next day, everyone was packing up their cars and getting ready to head out. The girls had thought it wise to get out of town just in case the FBI some how connected them to Rossi.
“Trying to settle in one place is starting to seem like a long shot.”
Dean looked at Mariah as she sighed out those words. He saw a longing and a glimmer of pain. “Life of a hunter sweetheart.”
She nodded. “I know.” She gave him a smile smile. “Thank you. For your help.”
Dean smiled. “No problem.”
Sam walked out of the house laughing with Kit right behind him. Those two had been getting along great since the night before. Dean watched as his brother gave to witch a quick little hug. Well I’ll be dammed.
Kit gave Dean a friendly wave andSam walked over to him and Mariah. “I wanted to apologize.”
Mariah held up a hand. “It ok Sam.” She let his brother pull her into a hug as well. “You girls stay safe.”
Mariah laughed and pulled back. “Of course we will.”
“I trust you.” Dean made that comment and Mariah’s face lit up. She wrapped her arms around him in a hug of her own. Dean hugged her back, resting his chin on the top of her head. “See you around sweetheart.”
Mariah stepped back. “Hopefully.”
Dean got in his car and Mariah went over to get in hers. Kit was already in the drivers seat. Mariah eyed the necklace chain barely visible from under her shirt collar. “Is it safe to wear that?”
“It’s harmless,” Kit reassured her.
“You said it was something for destruction.”
Kit sighed. “Misinterpretation.” She fingered the stone resting against her skin. “I’m perfectly safe.”
