Hymn to Sekhmet
To Sekhmet who is great of power, I offer my praise. O fierce-hearted lioness, great Eye of Ra, beloved of Ptah who creates as you destroy, whose wrath falls on the wicked, whose breath of fire defeats all foes, O lady of slaughter, lady of red, Sekhmet of the seven arrows, fearsome and furious, you who arose from Hathor’s rage, O bright and blessed one before whom evil trembles, I call to you, O goddess. O Sekhmet who wields the might of vengeance, you grant as well a kinder gift: O gracious one, averter of plagues, healer of ills, mender of wounds who hears the prayers of the ailing and the injured, the pleas of the desperate and the wretched, mistress of physicians who steadies the surgeon’s hand, I thank you for your blessings, I pray to you for favor.
O Victorious One In Battles,
Overcomer Of All Enemies,
Destroyer of Plagues
and Great One Of Healing,
look down upon those blessed to walk in your graces
and grant us strength in our times of need.
Opportunity Escapeth Her Not,
And nor shall it evade us.
On this 4th of July, I ask Set, He Who is Great of Strength, to protect the immigrants who are facing deportation and the loss of their families and livelihoods, and to protect the refugees who have lost their homes and been turned away by everyone else. Dua Set.
I ask Sekhmet, Lady of Protection, to protect the minorities inside this country, to protect the indigenous people of these lands and the descendants of slaves who were dragged here in chains, who are trapped in a country that has always hated them. Dua Sekhmet.
I ask Serqet, Mistress of the Two Lands, to purge this nation of the poisons that have been threaded through it since the moment European colonizers first stepped foot on these lands, the same poisons which killed countless people and continue to kill today. Dua Serqet.
HOW TO CAST A CIRCLE
This video shows how to cast a circle in the Wiccan practice. In a future video I will go over how to Lay a Compass, which is a traditional witchcraft version of creating sacred space.
What is a Magic Circle? - A magic circle is an energetic construct that you create or envision around yourself before working magic, doing a ritual, or sometimes even meditating. - For a single magic worker or solitary witch, it’s usually around 5 or 6 feet in diameter, but the size expands based on the size of a group. - Sometimes, the circle is defined by something in the physical world, such as a ring of candles or scarves, or perhaps just symbolic items at the four cardinal points.
What is the purpose of a Magic Circle? - It separates the mundane space from a sacred space. Churches/temples are already a sacred space. - It serves as a container for your personal energy as well as the energy you conjure. - It provides protection. You cast it with the intention that only positive energies may enter or dwell within. This way, when you open yourself up to the energetic realm, you need not worry about picking up any unwanted energies or currents.
How to Cast a Magic Circle? - Find a flat, somewhat open space – indoors or out – where you won’t be disturbed. - Find the four cardinal directions using a compass (there is probably one on your smart phone). OPTIONAL: Place a simple representation of each of the four elements at each corresponding point around an imagined circle. Earth/north, Air/east, Fire/south, Water/west. - Go to the center of the circle for a moment to take a couple deep breaths and calm your mind. - Turn toward East, pause and say, “I call the Guardian of East and the element of Air to watch over this sacred circle.” Then go clockwise to South for fire, West for Water, and end at North for Air. Another, simpler option is to start at the east and walk clockwise in a circle three times while you envision the creation of a circle. - When done go to the center and raise arms up and down to form your circle into a more dimensional bubble.
How to Release a Circle - When you are ready, stand up, facing East and say, “Thank you, Guardian, go in peace and love.” Face the North, West, and finally South, saying the same words. - When you are back at East, point your finger or wand to the floor and slowly walk widdershins (anti-clockwise), imagining the circle dissolving and fading as you go.
How to: Cast a Circle
First and foremost, casting a circle is not always necessary. You can most certainly perform spells and rituals without casting a circle first. It’s completely up to you and what you feel comfortable with. Personally, I cast circles before performing rituals because I am very sensitive to different spirits and energies. I want to take all precautions so I know I am protected during my practices. I researched how to cast circles from different websites and combined the information, and changed some, to make this ritual right for me. These are only guidelines, change them as you feel you need to.
Prepare yourself–Do whatever you need to calm yourself. Take a few minutes to meditate, take deep breaths until you are sufficiently calm.
Intentions–Know your intent(s) for casting a circle. These can include: Creating a sacred space, protecting your space from harmful entities/energies with non-pure intentions, wanting protection within your sacred space, or any other reason you have for casting the circle.
As you’re doing this next part, you will turn clockwise with each Element in your hand as you say these words.
Begin by facing the East (or whichever direction you prefer. I begin in the East because that’s where the moon rises) with incense or sage and say, “I cleanse and consecrate thee, burning incense (or sage) as a Representative of the sacred Element of Air. May your essence bless me and bring clarity to my circle, so mote it be”.
Now face the South with a lit candle (white, or whatever color you are personally drawn to) and say, “I cleanse and consecrate thee, candle flame, as a Representative of the sacred Element of Fire. May your essence bless me and bring passion to my circle, so mote it be”.
Face the West with a bowl of pure water (this can be rain water, stream water, moon water, etc.) and say, “I cleanse and consecrate thee, bowl of water, as a Representative of the sacred Element of Water. May your essence bless me and bring intuition to my circle, so mote it be”.
Face the North with salt to throw (I grind it up in a mortar and pestle to make it extra fine) and say, “I cleanse and consecrate thee, salt, as a Representative of the sacred Element of Earth. May your essence bless me and bring stability to my circle, so mote it be”.
Use your hand, or your tool of choice (wand, knife, etc.) and begin in the East (or whichever direction you prefer) and say, “ I conjure the Circle of Power, by my will and my word; I conjure the Circle of Power, a boundary between the worlds; I conjure the Circle of Power, a sacred space for worship; I conjure the Circle of Power, to shelter me from negative energies; I conjure the Circle of Power, to contain the energies raised within. By the powers above, and the powers below, I close this circle, so mote it be!”
Invoke the Elements–Hold up your hands, or whichever tool you work with, face the East (or whichever direction you prefer) and say:
“Powers of the East, Powers of Air, send your winds of knowledge and wisdom to bless me and enlighten me in my circle. Hail and welcome Powers of the East”.
“Powers of the South, Powers of Fire, may you bring your spark of courage and inspiration to bless me and impassion me in my circle. Hail and welcome, Powers of the South”.
“Powers of the West, Powers of Water, may your intuition and sensitivity was over me, bless me and transform me in my circle. Hail and welcome, Powers of the West”.
“Powers of the North, Powers of Earth, from your fertile ground may I draw growth and stability. Bless me and strengthen me in my circle. Hail and welcome, Powers of the North”.
Invoke the Goddess–Change this to God if you so please, or invoke both of them. I personally only do the Goddess.
“Lady of the moon, of the fertile Earth and rolling seas
You who are the Maiden, with strong heart and nurturing Spirit
You who are the Mother, with able body and nurturing Spirit
You who are the Crone, with wise mind and compassionate Spirit
You who are birth, life, love and death
You who are North, South, East and West
The boundary and the center, within us and without us
Descend upon my circle to witness these rights in your honor.”
Congratulations! Your circle is complete and you may begin your ritual! As I stated before, these are only guidelines. If there are certain parts of this ritual that you don’t feel drawn to doing, then don’t do them. You can modify any part to fit your own personal practice. Happy spell casting!
Love and Light, always. 🌑✨

Laurel’s Circle Casting 101
In this post I will discuss my own personal way of casting a circle. Please note that there are many ways to cast a circle, and many reasons for doing so. My way is not the only way. Do what is comfortable for you.
For more information about Sacred Space and Circle Casting, please see this post.
What is a “Circle”?
To me, a circle is a protective “bubble” that you cast around your magickal working area. I typically only cast circles when I am performing a ritual, and not necessarily for spell work.
Why do I cast Circles?
I normally cast circles for ritual because I see it as a formal act. Rituals are sacred and formal acts of magick for me, and so I cast a circle to keep with that theme. Very rarely will I cast a circle for spell work unless I find that I need the circle to harness energy or to keep stray energies or spirits from interfering with my spell.
What is Sacred Space?
Sacred Space is what I normally operate in, instead of a circle. Sacred space serves the same basic principle as a circle: to serve as a protective space for magickal purposes. However, a sacred space is constant. I do not have to “cast” a protective space every time I perform a ritual or spell. I choose my area that will serve as my sacred space, and when I need some “spiritual” or “witchy” time, I go to my sacred space.
How do I cast Circles?
My way of casting a circle is more or less, very simple. There are three basic steps I take to create my circle:
- Draw the Circle - Invite the Elements - Invite Deity

CIRCLE CASTING 101
A magickal circle is an energetic construct that you build or envision around yourself before working magick, doing a ritual, some like to cast a circle before meditating or reading tarots. For a solitary practitioner the circle is typically 5-6 ft in diameter, but the size expands based on the size of the group. It can be defined physically, energetically, or both.
Circles provide protection and serves as a container for your personal energy as well as the energy you conjure.
Please remember that this is just what i personally like to do when casting a circle, but that there are many methods.
Preparation for circle casting
1. Determine how much space you will need.
2. Cleanse your area. Vacuum, sweep, throw away any trash in the area.
3.Make sure you have everything you need for your ritual! Theres nothing more frustrating than having your circle casted and realizing you’ve forgotten an herb or any supplies you need for the work you’re about to do.
4. Purify your area. Light purifying incense, sage, sprinkle salt and holy 💧. Most importantly, Visualize the negative energy dispersing. If you don’t focus & visualize, your physical actions will have little effect. Visualization is hands down one of the most important things in any and all magickal workings!
5. Now its time to cast your circle!
Visualize protective energy coming from within you and direct it towards your casting arm. Focus it through a casting tool (Athame, wand, or ✋) and visualize a beam of energy coming from it and settling on the ground. Trace your circle with this energy, 3 times in a clockwise direction. Once for protection, once for focus, and once for power.
Call the 4 quarters
Face North and say “I call to the North, to the element of Earth. Grant me (us if not practicing alone) your endurance, your strength.” Sprinkle salt onto your altar or crumble soil into a bowl on your altar.
Face East and say “I call to the East, to the element of Air. Grant me your creativity and your intuition.” Light incense, wave a fan,or drop feathers onto your altar.
Face south and say “I call to the South, to the element of Fire. Grant me your passion and your energy.” Light candles.
Face west and say “I call to the West, to the element of Water. Grant me your empathy and your emotion.” Pour blessed/storm/moon/natural water into a bowl or into your chalice.
Now would be the time to call on any deities you’d wish to work with. You can call any Goddess or Angel by personalizing this to them. I typically do not personally work with deities, but if you were to want to, Call to them similar to how the Elements are called. Ex. “I call to Gaia, Mother Goddess, Spirit of Earth.” and then place an offering symbolizing them, so for Gaia you might place grain on your altar as an offering.
If not solitary, now would be the time to invite others to the circle. The group leader typically invites others in by a series of phrases, although i know every coven has their own method fine tuned for themselves, This is just the method i’ve seen used and am familiar with. Group leader:”Children of the Goddess, I now invite you to enter our circle.” Each member will be asked “How do you enter this circle?” The response should be “In perfect love and perfect trust.”
Now its time to raise energy. This is the most important part of this process. It is so important because when you open your circle at the end of spellwork, You release all of your energy you have filled with intent out into the universe to go manifest whatever it may be you have called to. You want as much energy as possible to be released carrying your intent!
Here are a few ways! There is no wrong way to do this part, and there are SO MANY ways. You can fine tune this all to you. Remember that this is your ritual, and you want your energy fully behind everything you are doing. This is all customizable, most of all the energy raising.
-Witches Rune Chant
“Darksome night and shining Moon,
East, then South, then West, then North,
Hearken to the witches’ rune;
Here i come to call thee forth.
Earth and Water, Air and Fire.
Wand and pentacle and sword,
Work ye unto my desire,
Hearken ye into my word.
Cords and censer, scourge and knife,
Power of the witches blade waken all ye unto life,
Come ye as the charm is made.
Queen of Heaven, Queen of Hell, Lend your power unto my spell,
and work my will by magic rite.
By all the power of Land and Sea, By all the might of Moon and Sun,
As I do will, So mote it be;
Chant the spell, and be it done.
Eko, Eko Azarak
Eko, Eko Zamilak
Eko, Eko Karnayna
Eko, Eko Aradia”
-Meditating to raise energy. Visualize energy building and building by visualizing warm, yellow light fill your body until its expanding out of your body and filling the dome above your circle. visualize it filling with energy until you are content.
-Music or Drumming, Dancing and Chanting.
Once you reach your desired energy level, it is time to get into whatever spellwork or ritual you desire to preform!
After your spellwork, its time for Cakes and Ale. I like to make little spirit cakes and have some red wine after a ritual. Expelling all of that energy from your body is draining, and you should take your time to enjoy this part of the ritual. Set a cake and some wine aside for the entities who have lent you their energy as thanks. Cakes can be anything, from saltine crackers to cupcakes. Ale can be water. Anything that works for you is ok. For my cakes, i bake a shortbread and mix whatever ingredients i want into the dough. This way, I can craft them with the intent for whatever ritual i may be doing.
ONCE YOU FINISH YOUR WORK SAY GOODBYE TO THE ELEMENTS AND THANK THEM FOR THE POWER THEY BROUGHT. ALWAYS SAY GOODBYE AND THANK ANY DEITIES CALLED ON.
HERE IS HOW I DO IT:
-Farewell to Goddess. ex. “I thank you, Gaia, for gracing me with your glory. Farewell and Merry met.”
-Farewell to Quarters (Counterclockwise).
“My thanks to the element of Water, Your compassion was a gift. Farewell & Blessed be.” Now cover your dish of water or pour it out, Physically say goodbye as well.
“My thanks to the element of Fire, Your fierceness was a gift. Farewell & Blessed be.” Douse your candle.
“My thanks to the element of Air, Your wisdom was a gift. Farewell & Blessed be.” Douse incense/flip fan/turn over feather.
“My thanks to the element of Earth, Your protection was a gift. Farewell & Blessed be.” Cover earth with a cloth, or return it to ground.
I like to walk the circle the opposite way of its casting three times, and voila!
Keep in mind that this is just my method! There are many methods and this is just one of them.
I hope this is helpful to you!
-Love and light, @lapiscat
Witchcraft: Basic Casting, And Undoing A Circle
A circle can be cast before spells, rituals, and other magickal practices. A circle works not only as a shield to protect you from negative entities and energies, while in, and out of spell work, but it also traps the energy on the inside in with you to create a space of high energy that will aid you while doing magickal practices. Casting a circle is a good thing to do whenever you feel threatened by anything spiritual and is very easy to learn. There are many different ways to cast a circle but for this post I will be doing a basic one in order to introduce the concept.
1) First you must find a space that you want to cast your circle in. This can be anywhere.
2) Second you can mark your circle with a physical representation like a circle of chalk, a circle of rocks, or some other thing you can put in a circle. You do not need a physical representation or tools to cast a circle, but they help to focus you, and bring out your energy.
3) Next it is time to cleanse the area of negative energies you do not have to do it but it is recommended.
4) Once you’re done cleansing. Make sure you have everything you need for magical workings inside your physical representation of your circle. Then stand in the center of your circle, close your eyes and then ground, and center.
5) Once you have reached an altered state of consciousness then visualize blue mist energy flowing into your index, and middle fingers.(or any tool you want to use to cast a circle with)
6) Now take those two fingers and point at the physical representation of your circle. Visualize your energy as bright blue mist flowing into it crafting your circle as you slowly spin around. You can also say something like “I cast a circle to protect me from all negative energy, and to aid me in my craft.” (this is not entirely necessary but it will help to focus your energy towards your intention.) Once you get back to where you started you can take a relaxing posture knowing that your circle is now completed.
Along with casting a circle you need to learn how to undo circles. So here is a way to dissipate your circle after you are done with the magical workings you were doing inside it.
1) Stand back up in the center of the circle.
2) Visualize the circle as blue mist circling around you.
3) Say something along the lines of “Circle that I have cast dissipate back to the energies at be.” (this is not entirely necessary but it will help to focus your energy towards your intention.)
4) Then visualize the circle burning away into nothingness.

Hey there, I want to start learning runes, do you have any master post or so? I have so many questions. One being that if the rune falls upside down ( only one side is carved right?) then? Do you throw the runes in a circle or shake in a bag and pick
I hope this answered your question. The runes are spelled differently, it seems like everyone spells the translated name out wrong.
And I realized I didn’t answer the second part to your rune casting question, yes, you can shake the bag. You need to do what is the most comfortable to you!
If you have any questions, just send me another ask. I wanted to do this right.
