I know it’s my shit and therefore everything is ‘canon’ but a lot is... not really ‘they are going to kiss’ canon

Jane and Skipper are definitely going to kiss. They’re the primary romance! The Lagoons are married so they obviously kiss. John and Rockstar have one of those dumb on-again off-again things you get in superhero/civilian relationships. Doctor Fred has a line forming and still gets kinda melancholy if you bring up his ex-boyfriend. Hive can’t remember the names of her children’s fathers so her romance is with lymph and whipped cream lattes.

One time Hive mentioned a drone she had a mating scheduled with BY NAME and everyone freaked out but it turns out he just sired 3 of her 4 queen daughters so she made a sticky note.

“Doctor Hive has a date??”

“No, she has a sticky note.”

Doctor Fred makes an effort to get to know Skipper because she’s dating his best friend and they end up extensively bonding about their turbulent relationship with their inherent magic. Also how great Jane is, much to Jane’s embarrassment.

“Jane! I talked to Skipper and she agrees that your laugh is cute and NOT weird.”

“Why were you talking to Skip about that??”

the shortest answer is “cluttered”, because there are a lot of species in witchmouth that usually have to shop at specialty stores and the staff in the hospital have a whole mission statement about accommodating everyone.

they have one of those “days since our last (x)” signs hidden behind the register and the ‘x’ in this case is ‘insect-related complaint’ because humans really don’t like that the hospital gift shop sells dead cicadas but they’re the traditional new baby gift for like three different fae subspecies.

Now i wanna see that one person who can't for the life of them remember names *unless* they give people nicknames and not knowing what a huge deal it is to demons- It just its such an easy way to make *drama* and *Character devlopment* and the idea fucking hit me with a sledgehammer so I'd notice it lmao

now i want to do a witchmouth plot line where a character is 100% immune to all magic (this would likely be a patient) and keeps calling doctor fred like.  doctor frank or something, while doctor fred screams internally

Demons in Witchmouth’s setting take nicknames SO SERIOUSLY, because a demonic alias is a magical compulsion. You can’t call a demon anything EXCEPT their alias unless you know their true name, which also means you have immense power over them.

There is no bigger power play than calling a demon by a nickname. It means “I can make you do anything I want”.

It’s usually a threat, but there’s also a cultural context for demons using nicknames for loved ones who have chosen to trust them with their true name to say “I can make you do anything I want but we both know you can trust me not to”.

Not to sound like an anti vaxxer but isn’t lycanthropy like werewolves which are a species? unless I’m misunderstanding what you mean and there’s another lycanthropy or something

well, traditional werewolves are created when you’re bitten by a werewolf-- it’s a transmittable curse/disease, so I decided I wanted to work with it as something akin to a permanent viral infection.  once you have it, it’s a management situation, but it is contagious and werewolf bites are serious physical injuries even before the transformation starts.  people with lycanthropy have a number of symptoms in their human form, which include the following:

ravenous hunger and bizarre cravings in the week before the full moon, as well as severe irritation, insomnia and headaches

lethargy and depressive spells during the new moon

increased sensitivity to sounds and smells, which can lead to sensory stress and nausea

recurrent nightmares and associated memory loss

it’s occasionally called “moon rabies” in more extremist political circles because the wolf form is easily comparable to a rabid dog.  medical professionals and the afflicted rarely use the term because it’s got a scare tactic slant to it-- rabies is fatal, lycanthropy is treatable.

it’s okay, anon is on exactly for situations like this! <3  I haven’t given too much thought on how to do angels, partially because I’m not sure if it’s better to go with “wildly inhuman” or “person with wings” in terms of entertainment value, but an extremely salty hospital admin would fit right in

Hi, I had a question about Blueberry! You write that she is a Changeling - what version of the myth are you using for your source? What do you define Changelings as?

So, to start out, most of the mythology in Witchmouth General is sort of a mishmash of popular culture interpretations and reinterpretations of actual mythology! Because it has a comedic slant, I’m going with what works best with the narrative and mood, as well as what I can use for weird medicine.

For changelings specifically, they’re essentially a side effect of the strange, semantics-based way that Fae magic works. A fairy who takes a human child through magical means (they’re fully capable of regular kidnappings) has to have some kind of agreement with the child or a guardian to do so. When these agreements are poorly written, they only give the fairy ownership of the child itself, not the life the child leads. Physical and conceptual are separate in Fae magic— it’s why you can trade for things like “luck” or “success” as well as actual physical things like “your firstborn” or “a truckload of gold”. When the physical thing is also a person with a life full of conceptual positives and negatives, the fairy can’t damage the child’s life, only take the child.

To resolve this conflict, the magic creates a copy of the child to maintain the child’s life. This is a changeling, and they are generally aware of what they are but magically compelled to act “in character” until the magic is broken in some way, generally if the original child meets the changeling, dies, or is released from the magic that created the changeling in the first place.

I’m on my phone so I’m going to talk about Blueberry’s specific situation in a reblog!

Blueberry is the changeling of a girl named Maddie Vincent, who was kidnapped when she was six years old and her father got involved in a Fae gambling ring. Don’t gamble with fairies, folks.

Blueberry “was” Maddie for a little under three years, while Maddie was trapped in the Fae realm. Skipper, the cast’s actual wings and all fairy, is the daughter of the gambling syndicate member who took Maddie. She looked after Maddie of her own accord, in spite of only being ten herself. Eventually, Maddie’s human parents managed to get into the Fae realm, but they couldn’t take their own daughter back, so they took Skipper instead. Shit got pretty wild after that, with children being kidnapped back and forth for the better part of a decade until Skipper turned 18 and appealed to the courts for custody of her 14 year old sisters.

As of the beginning of the story, Skipper manages the hospital gift shop to be closer to Blueberry, who wants to live on her own but gets kinda jumpy if she doesn’t see her sister often enough, while Blueberry is a nurse. Maddie is in therapy for severe agoraphobia and lives with Skipper, but all three sisters are very close.

I’m working on Witchmouth General’s superhero culture today!

It’s a “one hero to a city” deal, with Witchmouth’s superhero being Rockstar. Superpowered kids usually don’t become heroes, as it’s kind of an obnoxious, messy job, and your life is ALWAYS high drama when you’re a superhero.

Super villains happen a lot, and most people treat them like car accidents on the freeway— you cringe when you pass them but you mostly complain about them causing traffic

Rockstar is a loud, absurd show off, in a case of superpower self-fulfilling prophecy. His power gets stronger the more people are paying attention to him, and it’s incredibly flashy. You know those animes where somebody’s special move causes a big dragon to show up behind him? Rockstar’s powers work that way. Everything is wildly cinematic and there are lots of roaring tigers that don’t technically exist biting people.

It’s really hard to tell how much of Rockstar’s nonsense is just Rockstar being Rockstar and how much is a purposeful attempt to get into the tabloids so his powers stay in peak form.

All the affairs are fake, though. His relationship with John is pretty new, but he was pining for the guy for years.

If Rockstar is showy confidence, then John is silent confidence. He’s totally fearless in his pursuit of his stories, and he works in exposing corruption. The cops hate him, the villains hate him, the city government hates him. He’s had his fingers and his knees broken and he just does not flinch. And he isn’t a hardened badass either— he’s a dorky gay dude who makes a lot of jokes.

Rockstar is totally overwhelmed by how attracted he is to this reporter.

So my friend @xenosaurus made a wonderful narrative universe called @witchmouthgeneral, it’s basically a medical procedural dramedy in a universe with all of the supernatural things. I wanted to show my appreciation with some VA work for one of the main characters, Dr. Hive. She’s a sardonic, insectoid hive mind alien who is also the resident genius surgeon! It was a challenge syncing up multiple tracks and making my own reverb, but I’m really happy with the result!
