Any signs of improvement could only be attributed to the extra practice that he’s been putting in —— not that he was about to tell anyone about that. His gaze flits away from Sugawara for a moment as he shrugs, ❝ Have I? ❞ it’s not modesty but rather self-preservation that causes him to edge around the subject. Being a blocker came with its own shortcomings. Volleyball had its shortcomings. One of those things was that it was annoyingly easy to injure your fingers. He knew that his finger wasn’t completely sprained, but it was on the VERGE after blocking one of Hinata’s spikes in the middle of practice and he was —— annoyed about it. To be short. ( ha. ) His finger smarted and the feeling of taping it securely to another finger was frustratingly familiar, but it wouldn’t do to have a severe sprain simply because he didn’t take a moment to tape it. ❝ One second, ❞ his tone is neutral in response to the presence behind him, but when he turns his eyebrow TWITCHES. ❝ I’m shocked —— I didn’t know that you could walk away from a volleyball court of your own volition. ❞

The praise was unexpected and his expression remains neutral upon hearing it. Perhaps he should smile, give some sort of positive reaction, and there is a part of him that is FLATTERED by his upperclassman’s compliment. There is. ❝ Thank you, Sugawara-san, ❞ he says, head tipping.

The growing smile on Kuroo’s face was making a muscle in his cheek jump, but after a moment he smoothed it out with force and returned the smile with one of his own. After all, he hated to lose more than he hated putting excessive effort into something that held no true importance. It was a marginal gap between the two, but it was still there, and it niggled at him with insistence. ( He was Not Thinking about the friends comment. )

For a long moment ( or two ) he considered giving a blatant NO in response to Kuroo helping him any more than he already was. The idea made his intestines twist and his head hurt, but the point was there and if he did try to tape up his finger himself, it would end poorly. Breaking his finger wasn’t ideal. Everyone else was busy.

“If you insist,” he said in one single exhale, holding out his hand.

Attention turned to her and he was on the cusp of anticipation and blatant lack of care for the entire interaction, but there was a small ( near minuscule ) spark of curiosity for what party trick she was about to do. Maybe, also, a vague sense of foreboding for the same reason, but he got that sort of feeling by just being near people, also, so it wasn’t to be trusted.

"I wasn’t aware there were cool party tricks.” Words said without malice, but still flat nonetheless.
