To be independent of public opinion is the first formal condition of achieving anything great.
Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (via fyp-philosophy)
She felt something brush her hair and wondered vaguely through her tumult if it were his lips. He was so tender, so infinitely soothing, she longed to stay in his arms forever. With such strong arms about her, surely nothing about harm her.
There were pain and bewilderment in her face, the bewilderment of a pampered child who has always had her own way for the asking and who now, for the first time, was in contact with the unpleasantness of life.
Ava Gardner in The Killers (1946).
Gone With The Wind
“George Cukor has a marvelously intricate imagination which works on a very fine scale. Take a look at the scene where Mammy’s lacing up Scarlett- it’s just crammed with tiny, fleeting expressions and motives- and then at the next one when Scarlett sits on the stairs eating a chicken leg. There is no other scene in the film with so much detail, such richness- those were the Cukor scenes.” -Olivia de Havilland
Preach 😄
“Scarlett fascinated me but she needed a good healthy, old-fashioned spanking on a number of occasions and I should have been delighted to give it to her. But she had courage and determination and that is why women must secretly admire her- even though we can’t feel happy about her too many shortcomings.” -Vivien Leigh
Gone with the Wind, 1939.

“Oh, I do, pigeon; I just like to see you flirt.” He lightly pinched her chin between his thumb and forefinger, raising an eyebrow as he looked her up and down.
“It is quite becoming on you, Scarlett. I do believe I’ve turned to an expert at dressing you.” Rhett’s dark eyes were alight with mischief as usual. The smirk that decorated his lips gave away his thoughts; the glint in his gaze hinted that he’d like a try at undressing her.
She didn’t protest the way he lifted her chin up to him, and even tilted her head at an angle that flattered her features best so that she could be admired better.
And she was about to reply when his gaze caught her eye, and she was suddenly feeling quite underdressed. The easy smile quickly faded, and she quickly cast her gaze down to offer Rhett a disapproving look, her cheeks tinting the more and more his eyes roamed.
“Oh, you are the devil.”
A sudden hush fell on the crowd both at the mention of the sum and the name. Scarlett was so startled she could not even move…everybody turned to look at her…she leaped to her feet, her heart hammering so wildly she feared she could not stand, hammering with the thrill of being the center of attention again, of being the most highly desired girl present and oh, best of all, at the prospect of dancing again.

everyone: stop being in love with ashley

It’s a marvelous part. It is too, so much a challenge for me, for I don’t consider myself as experienced as many of the fine American actresses who were mentioned for the part. It makes my job harder, because I know I have to be not just good, great.
