This summer I got to draw a poster for IAmElemental, a toy company that exclusively makes action figures for girls! The poster is for display in libraries to help encourage summer reading for kids. I love the fact that IAmElemental is tapping into an underserved market for girls and it was great working with the founder, Julie Kerwin.

I had free reign for the poster and decided to draw Enthusiasm kicking butt while reading. This was mostly inspired by my own childhood when I spent probably 90% of my time with my nose in a book and could frequently be found reading in class (I would try and hide my book in my lap) reading while walking (I walked into poles a few times) and reading while rollerblading (I limited that to my driveway thankfully).

« Mon nom d’artiste c’est Pierre Kwenders​. C’est le nom de mon grand-père. Je voulais lui rendre hommage; c’était un grand homme qui avait un amour de la culture. Je ne l’ai jamais rencontré, mais j’en ai tellement entendu parler toute mon enfance qu’on dirait qu’il a toujours été là. Je viens de Kinshasa au Congo et mon grand-père était l'un des premiers à avoir des librairies dans cette ville. Si je pouvais le rencontrer, je lui demanderais de rester en vie un peu plus longtemps, parce que j’aurais voulu le connaître. Et je lui dirais merci, parce que si je suis ce que je suis aujourd’hui, si j’ai tout cet héritage culturel, c’est un peu grâce à lui. Tout cet attrait pour les arts, je ne pense pas que ça soit tombé du ciel. »

I never met him, but I’ve heard so much about him during my childhood that it feels like he’s always been here. I’m from Kinchasa in Congo, and my grandfather was one of the firsts to own libraries in this city. If I could meet him, I’d ask him to stay alive a bit longer, because I wish I’d known him. And I’d tahnk him, because if I am what I am today, if I have all this cultural heritage, it’s a bit thanks to him. This attraction to arts, I don’t think it fell from the sky.”
