Dog Training Philosophy
In order to train the perfect dog, you need to know how the dog came to be, their role in society and how they think and learn. Let’s start with the origin of the dog. According to Doctor John Bradshaw at the University of Bristol, every dog’s DNA is 99.9% identical to the Grey Wolf, making all dogs a sub species of wolves. Similar to our relationship to primates, understanding this will be a key in understanding the evolved nature of the dog.
Like wolves, dogs are pack animals and social creatures. Their desire and mentality to be in a pack is coded into their natural instincts. They also have a hierarchical structure, alpha being the leader. The word of alpha is law. This being said, you need to know that YOU are alpha and YOU lead the pack! Embrace this fact and your dog will love you for it. This does not mean you have to hit or intimidate your dog for them to acknowledge you as alpha. You become alpha by providing them with structure, rules, and basic survival necessities such as food, water, shelter and security. In exchange for these resources, your dog will live to please you! If you do not assume the alpha role, your dog will be sure to assume this role for you, which can lead to a hurricane of bad behavior and overall negative relationship with your dog.
Dogs do well in society if they are trained appropriately and taught the rules to behave. When training your dog, be patient and positive with them. Repetition is the father of learning and mastery only comes from practice and discipline. According to studies at the Dog Lab Canine Cognition Center at Yale, dogs have a two-second time frame after their actions to learn if a behavior is good or bad. This means that in order to correct your dog’s behavior, you must catch them in the act and respond immediately. The same rule applies when you are teaching your dog. You must reward them promptly after they obey the command. Train your dog for 15 minutes every day and be sure to give them commands at random. This will manifest a strong language between you and your dog, thus unlocking the gateway to an obedient, super dog.
