It was three days later that the full moon was supposed to rear it’s ugly head out onto the clear sky. You used to love it, every wolf does. Boosted your strength and amplified everything you felt by a ten, especially on warm nights where you’d run out into the forest behind your childhood home.
But for the last few years it’s been nothing but a reminder of what you’ve lost. Which is why you were quiet as you sat with the girls on the porch, waiting for the wolves to come out and say bye before heading out into the forest for the night, not paying attention to the conversation at hand.
You were snapped out of it by a gentle hand settling on your shoulder. A warm and comforting touch. You looked behind yourself, spotting Jongin, the rest of the pack slowly trickling out onto the porch, some half naked, some getting undressed right there.
“You alright?” he asked and you nodded, a million thoughts and emotions running through your head at the moment, but the most prevalent one, jealousy. You wanted to go and run, to feel the wind rake through your fur.
You called Jina the other day, who almost blew out your ear from the way she yelled at you for not picking your phone up. But she was right, you two only had each other, and she was worried out of her mind. You told her everything that happened and gave her some time to figure out what to do with her tattoo parlor, as she needed to come with you to the wolves’ house, it was only a matter of time before someone showed up for her. The boys did take turns patrolling her neighborhood, per your request, until she can join you, and Sehun was more than happy to volunteer every time for some reason.
Usually, you would be long gone. New name, new city, new job, settling into a familiar routine of just existing. No friends, no boyfriends, nothing besides the phone calls to Jina, Mark and Jackson. But this time, you were trapped, caged in this little town and now in this house. You spent the last few days talking over with Junmyeon and Areum how you can save Mark. You would rather surrender yourself then leave him behind. You owed your life to those three, especially Mark.
Junmyeon told you he heard whispers. New wolf in town with suspicious comings and goings out of his house. You wanted to go immediately, they reminded you that you’re powerless. No one dared tell you that they confirmed Mark is in the house, that they’ve been making a plan amongst themselves.
You were always so consumed in your thoughts you never once noticed the worried glances the girls would throw your way, or the uneasy looks the wolves shared every time you brought up Mark. They were mostly sure he was alive, but they had to keep their distance as to avoid getting noticed. Tao notices wolves circling the house and he’s dead.
Jongin tried to get you to warm up to him. And you were trying, you really were. You’d give into a hug here and there, sitting next to him while eating, ocassional kiss on his cheek. But you couldn’t relax, he saw that. He saw the way you kept checking the doors and looking out the windows, even though he tried to reassure you that nothing would happen to you, that he wouldn’t let it. You wanted to believe him, and everything in you was screaming at you to do so. He is your mate, it’s his job to protect you.
You were snapped out of your daze by a kiss to the forehead, and a promise that he’d be back by the morning. You nodded, slightly shivering as you waved goodbye to the boys, already halfway through their shift.
A pair of arms circled you, rubbing your sides in an attempt to warm you up. “Come on hon, let’s get you inside’’ Areum muttered, leading you back inside the house, locking the door behind her.
“Let us show you how we spend the evening when we finally throw the boys out the house!’‘ Jin-ae clapped her hands together, leading you to sit on the couch.
You let yourself enjoy the tiny joys of girlhood as you picked out a movie together, settled on the couch with an ungodly amount of snacks, each of you adorning a face mask with a content smile on your faces.
It’s been so long since you did such mundane things. Since you hung out with friends. The girls really went above and beyond at making you feel at home, and you appreciated their efforts tremendously.
It’s as if the universe heard you laughing for the first time in a while, when a sharp knock on the front door cut you off.
You put down the bowl of popcorn on the coffee table rather loudly, frightening the girls further as you whipped around to the door, spotting no one through the glass pane.
You were quick on your feet, but so was Areum, grabbing a hold of your wrist before you could cross the living room to the front door.
“It’s way too early for them to be back.” Cora muttered, wiping her sweaty palms on the blanket that was strewn across her lap, eyes darting around the room, unease settling in the previously carefree space.
Areum and you shared a look, and with a gentle hand, you pried your wrist from her hold, “I’ll just look out the windows, promise.” you said softly and she nodded, trailing behind you as you moved the curtain slowly, looking out to the forest.
“There’s something on the porch.” she said, pointing a slender finger to a box that sat on the doorstep, “I’ll get it. Stay put.”
She was quick in opening the door, snatching the box and closing the door and relocking it. A collective exhale could be heard as the lock slid back into place, curtains already pulled to obstruct the view.
Your heart was racing and your legs started to tremble as you spotted the black rose on top of the box, the flower all too familiar, and before Areum even spoke, you knew.
“It’s for you, Y/N”
