A24 is making a TV series version of Alexis Hall book 'Boyfriend Material', which preceded 'Husband Material' and 'Father Material'.
Random thoughts nobody asked for or cares about regarding Boyfriend Material being optioned for a TV series:
Yeah, I'm a Londoner and I've read the book, so I think I can say a thing or two about it.
Alexis Hall has a rather curious writing style. You can definitely pick up on a lot of British slang and expressions in the book, and I think that adds a nice touch. However, from what I've heard, his style isn’t to everyone's taste.
I like this story; it is not about coming out, but about falling in love, being vulnerable, and exploring all these second guesses of your own worth when dating someone.
Lucien and Oliver are somehow likeable characters, and they develop nicely throughout the story, so it’d be cool to see that on screen. Still, I hope they work on the plot because it’s got a really good core idea, but some parts of the book feel kind of empty or fake.
The tropes… well, the fake dating is almost never actually fake. There's none of the longing, miscommunication, or hidden feelings you might expect. And the enemies-to-lovers thing boils down to one person being a total jerk to the other, who just puts up with it. Even in some parts, the romance hardly feels real, tbh.
I'm getting a bit ahead of myself, but if they approve a second season, the entire Husband Material story— which clearly borrows almost everything from Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994)—will need a complete overhaul. Again, the core idea is solid, and the discussion about marriage not becoming a indispensable next step in a relationship makes sense; however, the way it's executed could definitely use some improvement.
The third book, Father Material, is set to be released this summer. Let's see what it has in store.
Saw someone on TikTok who said that Lovro‘s might have been the last Isak season. Not sure why though. The last Isak season before this one was Robbe‘s in late 2019. But I don’t think it’ll be that long before another remake comes along tbh. Skam remakes won’t go away ;)
