Some of y'all are ACCIDENTALLY racist about Jabber and it needs to be said
Like, there's mostly good intentions, but I've noticed some of the ways Jabber is discussed on here is really, really weird and dehumanizing. This video has parts where it explains why I don't always feel comfortable with nonblack people's ideas of Jabber.
Some of y'all treat him like a representation of blackness to project your allyship onto rather than what he is - a character. He is a doll for fandom to play with in whatever way feels cathartic for that individual. Acting like he is some guy sent in to represent blackness for the Gachiakuta fandom is so much more racist than allowing for people to treat him like the full character he is.
It's okay to have your preferences (I have mine that I've stated before), but when you start trying to dictate how other people play with their Jabber doll, that's racist and limiting as fuck. I have my preferences for how Jabber's depicted, but understood a wide range of depictions are necessary for him to be seen as his full character and not just his blackness. I would never say my way's the only right way because how I connect with his character has more to do with my own blackness, gender, and interests than how I view blackness in general.
I've noticed this with black characters across fandoms and women characters as well. People will act like those characters are representations of their race or gender and how you treat them is how you view that race/gender in it's entirety rather than seeing them as a full individual character with traits outside of that.* It's restrictive and limiting.
This mindset is much more damaging than allowing black and female characters the same amount of freedom as nonblack or male characters, who get to be who they are without restrictions or limitations related to race or gender.
It's unfair and has to be pointed out because I think a lot of y'all mean well when you say "Don't do this with Jabber" or "It's racist to play with your Jabber doll this way" but you're actually doing more damage for black characters than good. Let people play with Jabber in all sorts of ways and just curate your online space to follow depictions of Jabber that jive with you and block ones that don't.
*This is also why I usually prefer using the word visibility rather than representation. I think the word representation can confuse people. While visibility is clearer in its intention that it's shining a light on ONE possible version of a lived experience and not meant to represent the entirety of that experience.
