Qrow hefts harbinger over his shoulder. Honestly, he probably won’t need it for this, but it’s something familiar to hold onto. In all honesty, he’s at least glad somebody has made a decent attempt to know his name, and also bring a weapon along just in case something goes south. He’s got Heaven’s Guardian hoisted over his own shoulder in what looks like an amicable imitation of Qrow, but is much more good-natured as he whistles into the cave, hearing it echo back.

Ryan is the first person to join the Grand Chase after the OG girls, Ronan comes right after him instead of before him. That’s, like, pointless Grand Chase knowledge but it was bugging me that I made such a stupid mistake lmao.

👻 - Does your muse believe in an afterlife? What do they think it’s like?

In Aernas and its affiliated multiverse, the afterlife exists, and the Chase once took a train to the Underworld to retrieve somebody’s soul. They were unable to find the soul, and when they killed the train conductor, the train ate him before trying to kill them, too. Like, I couldn’t make this up if I tried.

Anyways- the Aernaean Underworld is basically how most other religions see it as; eternal damnation for souls of people who did evil in their past lives and a reward for those who did good. However, for the good souls, there is also the reincarnation cycle. While in wait for their reincarnation, souls live alongside a tribe of demons known as the Haros, who are actually......soul bounty hunters.....who find evil souls who escaped from the Underworld........yeah, that’s a thing, too.

Actually, one of the Haros demons (Rufus Wilde) is also a member of the Chase, so Ryan basically, like, travels with a Grim Reaper. Yeah.

If this was restricted to plants instead of flowers, Ryan would probably say the Mother Tree, but just flowers.......

Probably dandelions! As he can understand how they feel, Ryan knows that they’re the most whimsical of the flowers, not particularly caring when they die. After all, their flowering part is also their seeds, so unlike other flowers that propogate throughout their life, dandelions’ propogation is at the end of their life cycle.

I guess to use an analogy, it’s like the ending scene from Charlotte’s Web, if Ryan was Wilbur and the dandelion seeds were Charlotte’s children!

💧 and 🐜?

💧 - How would your muse react to losing a best friend? How would they cope?

This is actually something that very much happened to Ryan, and I’m drafting up a very long meta post about this whole shitstorm that I may or may not finish someday who knows. A lot of this has to do with a prophecy where his best friend and multiple other very close friends of his die in order to save their world from evil. 

(Right now, concerning Eidolon specifically, he’s from the canon point where he had just witnessed firsthand the murder of his best friend Ronan Erudon. Ronan’s death later gets retconned in the sequel, but as far as Ryan knows right now, Ronan is dead.)

Ryan takes it.....not well at all. On the outside he’s fine, sure. That’s because he’s one of the comic relief characters of the group alongside Jin Kaien; he’s nowhere near as serious as other members, and it’s pretty expected of him to always crack a joke or make somebody smile. In that sense, he’s always forced himself to keep going, always making others feel better at the expense of burying his own feelings. However, it hurts. It hurts a lot and so he doesn’t think about it, because if he thinks about it then he won’t be able to stop thinking about it and all that pain that should have healed will just balloon again and get worse than before.

So......yeah, coping isn’t putting a bandaid on his wounds. It’s putting a bandaid on others’ and pretending he’s not bleeding out.

🐜 - How does your muse feel about animal lives? Do they treat them the same way they’d treat a person, or do they feel they’re inferior?

ANIMAL LIVES MATTER. Ryan has the (currently-sealed) ability to commune with nature (which he will try to get back as soon as possible because he feels really lonely when he’s in the forest and can’t hear any thoughts or feelings), which includes both plants and animals, so speaking with the animals of his home has always been as easy as speaking to any of the other elves. He’s always seen them as equals, and they’ve helped him more than he could ever repay them for, so it’s impossible to see them as lesser.

In fact, in canon, his best friends weren’t any of the other elves, or even any of the Druids that trained him, but the raccoons (pretty sure they’re tanuki based on gameplay but that’s not canon) that also lived in the forest. They treated him like one of them, but were also willing to listen to them whenever he needed them to do something for the sake of the forest.

🌎 - Does your muse want to change the world? How would they go about it?

In the broadest sense, no. A lot of Ryan’s journey in canon is to stop change (that is, stop evil from taking over the world), because his world - and the world of his friends - was originally at peace. There’s always been a balance to maintain, and as a Druid, Ryan has always been taught to maintain balance (in his specific case, the balance of nature).

For the most part, Ryan doesn’t want to do anything drastic that would change the world or any of its balances; rather, he just wants everything to stay how it used to be. Better.

⛔️ - How does your muse react to others breaking the law? If they would do it themselves, what is their reasoning?

Laws are very different from guidelines in the sense that laws are enforced by a higher authority (i.e. the police or the justice system), and the forest elves never had that higher authority so having an enforced legal system is new to Ryan. He definitely sees the merits of certain ‘laws’, like punishments for murder or grand larceny, but for the most part everybody has their reason for doing what they do and Ryan believes that a black-and-white list of rules and punishments isn’t very efficient for a society to follow.

Having that been said, Ryan definitely doesn’t see the harm in breaking less moral laws, like if somebody steals food when they’re in need or crosses the street when the light is green. Hell, he does it himself sometimes; his reasoning is, as long as it doesn’t do harm to others and it needs to be done, then it should be done.

It was peaceful, to leave the hustle and bustle of the village. The large fire, of course, was a large source of comfort – but there’s a familiarity in the call to those to carry lanterns and light the way, one that calls to Ophilia’s heart. Heading quietly down the trail to the forest, she begins to light the lanterns that line the path, humming gently to herself as she goes. She was a flamebearer, then and now. What flame, exactly… was she carrying?

It is almost enough to unsettle her. Almost. She pauses, noticing some steps on the trail, pulling back into a smile as the stranger approaches. “Forgive me… I didn’t realise someone else was already tending to this trail.”

Ryan hadn’t realized it had started getting dark until....well, it had gotten dark (which, considering the season, Ryan should have known the light would disappear earlier than usual), and the forest path is barely visible ahead of him. However - thank the gods - the familiar light of a swaying lantern-light gives him enough direction to follow the well-worn path, and he finally comes across the last of the lit lanterns, as well as the kind-looking girl tending to them.

❝ Don’t apologize! I’d have probably stayed here all night and turned into an elf-sicle if your light hadn’t guided me. ❞

He pauses before scratching his cheek awkwardly and glancing to the side.

❝ Do you mind if I stick with you for a bit? I don’t know if it’s good to be out here alone so late. ❞

Perhaps it’s just an excuse to procrastinate his return to the city and the fire raging therein, but he really does mean it regardless.

She… enjoyed the celebrations, yet simultaneously hated them. The pyre was warm, entrancing akin to Diaidem’s statue, but… the joy around her was not fit. She was not fit for it.

Heaviness in her chest and bitterness on her tongue, Sasume has once again left to help with the Rekindling instead—keeping the lanterns lit and gathering wood and the fire moss along the way, or perhaps vice versa.

It’s easy to notice someone she’s met among so many strangers, however, and she can’t help but scoff at him. A sneer starts to curl at her lips, and she wonders if even he is enjoying the wood-decimating celebration.

“What?” Sasume barks, gaze focused on her task instead of the certainly joyous fool. She grits her teeth and starts loading the fresh cart with lumber; whoever’d felled the latest tree had thought to chop most of it in advance. “Here to keep us ‘out of the woods’? Preach against woodcutting?”

With all the people to see out there helping with the festival, Ryan should have known that he’d see at least a few familiar faces, but he hadn’t expected one to come with such a sharp jab at him. His instant reaction is for the grin on his face to melt into a scowl and offer a retort of his own, immediately incensed at her accusations.

❝ Excuse you, I’m not some kind of buzzkill! Unlike somebody, apparently. ❞

He takes a short moment to collect himself - relax Ryan, she’s not the enemy - before helping with the wood; whether she understands it or not, it’s his form of passive aggression. As he continues talking, though, he has the sense to sound a bit more sheepish; maybe he does take the nature guardian thing a bit too far, but it’s not like he’s like that all the time, even if it’s one of the only parts of himself that he really ever shows.

❝ It’s not like I don’t think humans should take anything. I don’t really get it, but this is kind of like a nature festival, right? So.....it’s not bad. ❞

(Although he will be the first to admit that a giant fire in the middle of the city isn’t exactly his idea of a ‘good time’.)

Picking up sticks is easy. Picking up sticks while a little girl gets in his way is another matter altogether. Not that he had seen her in his way, of course, but he has nobody to blame but himself for that.

As it is, his steady jog back to the others - he won’t take the tinder all the way back to the bonfire because of reasons, but he’d at least help gather them from the deeper parts of the forest - is interrupted by a girl coming out of seemingly nowhere, and in his attempt to not run her over, he ends up careening to the side and dropping them haphazardly in a pile in the snow. Their conditions, however, aren’t his priority as he dusts himself off and goes to check on the other.

It was a modest meal, nowhere near as fancy as anything the more seasoned residents are capable of making- after all, Ryan lived off of the land for most of his life, and he hadn’t ever had real gourmet food until he had joined the Chase. Still, he does try his best, and with some help manages to make a decent nut cake worthy of being given out to others. And, since Ryan isn’t known for doing things in halves, he decides to give out slices by himself.

Now, he isn’t familiar with everybody in the village enough to truly pass things out to each resident; names here and faces there, sure, and some of them were too noticeable to not at least know by appearance, but trying to remember everybody would be too much effort, and so he instead decides to spread the holiday cheer by making rounds to each bunkhouse. Number 1 seems to be vacant at the moment, and so he turns his attention to bunkhouse 2, knocking loudly as he calls out to whoever might be inside.

Ryan has many regrets. Letting Kaze’aze escape, mistrusting Amy, not being able to save Ronan......

Losing his sister.

He was glad, at the very, very least, that she didn’t go like the other forest elves did. They had the worst of it; wounds covering their bodies until they were nothing but injuries, being left for the blaze to consume them, some even turned against each other as they fought to survive. No, her passing was a peaceful one, hugged by the roots of the mother tree and appearing for all the world like she was simply sleeping. For that he’d be eternally grateful.

“You’ll be okay,” had been his last words to her as thick smoke rolled through the air, passing over their hiding spot closer to the ground. “Just be strong, okay? It’ll be over soon.” She had been weak to begin with, and the forest’s condition.....it had done nothing to help her, instead rendering her nigh unmovable. Her coughing fits had gotten worse, and he knew it wouldn’t be long until he, too, had to choose between his family and his life. His heart and his duty.

His sister and the forest.

“I know,” were her last words, smiling softly up at him as both of her hands held one of his. Whether she meant the words or not, he still isn’t sure to this day. “Stay safe, brother. Protect everybody for both of us, and come back safe.”

He said nothing, but he still promised her. If he did anything, it would be that. He would come back to take care of her and everything would get better. And he did. He did come back, of course. He never broke a promise, especially not to the only family he had left.

That isn’t to say that she had waited for him.
