Confidently embedded in the cliff edge of Flinders, a peninsula town south-east of Melbourne, Tidal Arc House redefines how architects might respond to the Australian coastal landscape by departing from the prevailing Australian beach house vernacular in favour of a design that is entirely responsive to site. Woods Bagot is the winner of a design excellence competition aimed to reinvigorate the former Penrith Council Chambers into a new commercial building, revitalising the area and part of a wider area transformation that sees Penrith position itself as a commercial centre for growth and innovation. The proposed design, featuring approximately 8,000 sqm of flexible commercial space, ground floor retail, on-site parking and a building façade that activates both street frontages, incorporates best practice principles of environmentally sustainable design and is targeting a minimum of 5 Star Green Star rating in line with the local Council’s ‘Cooling the City Strategy’. The form is articulated as three distinct smaller forms which creates better natural ventilation than a uniform box and can be programmed separately or as a whole allowing the building to flexibly adapt to changing future needs. 131 Henry Street will be uniquely focused on both community and workplace to create a building that benefits the public whilst delivering a workplace of the future. Building on the wellness and sustainability tenets of the development, the key to its longevity is to design the building with flexibility, capable of adapting to changing user needs. @penrithcitycouncil #coolingthecity #mixeduse #designexcellence https://www.instagram.com/p/CM0hnkaFmcs/?igshid=14v7k7ch0hdj7
Installation of the @mlccentre redevelopment’s curved glass façade started this week in Sydney, bringing to life an invigorating concept that creates connections between the project’s luxury retail, food and beverage, Theatre Royal and plaza. A contemporary contrast to a Modernist tower, the project maintains the Seidler legacy while progressing the popular public spaces for a new era. Once finished, the serpentine facade will ribbon throughout the entire space – emitting a soft glow that will illuminate the space at night. Announcing 537 Elizabeth Street as a winner in the @architecturensw Award for Residential Architecture – Multiple Housing. Maximising a tight urban corner site in the dense city fringe, 537 Elizabeth is an exemplar in quality amenity, planning and materiality. Comprising 12 one bedroom plus study apartments and ground level retail, the design has been enhanced through the close and collaborative relationship between architect and client as developer and builder. The result is a high quality and crafted solution to densification representing a future model for urban living. Skilled use of shared space and flexible, bespoke joinery imply a spacious interior, with the corner location allowing dual aspect and increased daylight and ventilation for apartments. Attention to detailing and craftsmanship elevates the beauty of this small group of apartments, reflecting the synergy of the team throughout the design and construction process. The long facade’s sliding rhythm of solid and void breaks down scale and increases visual interest of this bookend building. End facades complement and enhance adjacent built form, composing high amenity outdoor spaces with acoustic and visual privacy. Robust and timeless materials minimise maintenance and enhance durability, demonstrating an appreciation of quality detailing and elegant simplicity of finish. 537 Elizabeth is the future model for compact urban sites, presenting crafted quality and amenity for residents and neighbourhood revitalisation. @domenic.alvaro @conathanassiou @xlbuild https://www.instagram.com/p/CCTH8gJjWSQ/?igshid=14s8jawy2ucf0

is raising the roof at St. Mary’s Calne School library. Construction of the deeply folded ceiling at this 150-year old private girls’ school in Wiltshire, UK is progressing apace. The library opens onto a mature fruit orchard, which inspired its design. The narrow columns recall tree trunks, while the angled wood panels are an architectural interpretation of the branching canopy. The ceiling appears to float above its generous clearstory, which floods the library with daylight. #construction #education #library https://www.instagram.com/p/CCKCZRNDMSy/?igshid=1if6a58mv2306
