Echinacea, nettle, peppermint
//grimoire pages ideas for baby witches//
-crystals correspondences✨ -crystal cleansing methods✨ -flowers & herbs uses (you could also include drawings and/or dried flowers & herbs)✨ -tea properties & ideas✨ -moon phases & astronomical events✨ -ideas for a relaxing witchy day✨ -pendulum board✨ -sigils (methods to create them, how to charge, protection sigils to keep grimoire safe from people’s eyes…)✨ -altar (if you are still in the broom closet your grimoire is the perfect place for your altar)✨ -witchy life hacks & tips✨ -tracker for your tarot & runestones readings ✨ -write about magical practices you’re interested in✨ -ideas for spells/potions✨
grimoire tip 🌱
long, encyclopedic lists of herbal correspondences are nice to have, but not really helpful for your personal practice if you don’t have access to all of them.
make a list of the herbs/spice/plants readily available to you from your garden, your kitchen, whatever you have, and spend some time writing out their correspondences. whenever you want to whip up a spell you have all the things you know you can use right there for you, a list of ingredients/substitutions ready based on your own accessibility.
Alternative Grimoire and Book of Shadows Ideas
📷 Photo Book - Use a photo album to hold photos of your spells, rituals, altars, seasons, sabbats, moon phases, herbs, crystals, colors etc. and write the spell, ritual, information or correspondences on the back of the photos. Take photos of your tarot spreads and readings writing them on the back of the photos or on another piece of paper that you can fold up an tuck behind the photo. You can even store pressed flowers / herbs.
📇 Index Cards - Write spells, rituals, information on index cards and store in a box or on a rolodex (yeah, talk about old school) you can even include photos too.
🃏 Trading Card Sleeves - Fill a binder with trading card sleeve pages (or cd sleeve cases) and cut paper and photos to fit in each slot. Write spells, rituals, and information on these cards. You can even store dried herbs or pressed flowers in the sleeves as well.
💾 Computer or USB - Use programs like evernote or just microsoft word. You can store all your information, spells and rituals on a USB flash drive. They have super cute USB drives on amazon and at stores now. You can also create a private Tumblr blog as your grimoire too.
📚 Old Book - You can use an old book and use gesso on the pages so you can write, paint or glue whatever you want in it.
If you have more ideas please share them. I already did the index cards and the USB so I think my next one will be the photo album one. I’m a visual learner and I love taking photos.

Ideas for your Book of Shadows
Most witches / magic workers have a Book of Shadows aka Grimoire, Book of Secrets, Book of Spells, etc.. Many beginner witches have no idea what they should put into their special book…
Your Book of Shadows is personal to you. You make this book your own. You don’t need to put every single bit of witchy knowledge in it. You should put things that are important to you such as what you believe and are practicing.
Crystals: names & uses
Herbs/Plants/Trees: their medicinal and metaphysical properties
Spells: ingredients, prayers
Rituals
Zodiac: characteristics and dates
Planets/celestial bodies: relation to magic and mythology
Gods/Goddesses/Deities: powers, how to worship them
Animals: spiritual powers and which animals you are connected to
Books: writings for reference
Colors: definitions of each color and what they can be used for
Altars: how/when to set them up and what you’ll need
Recipes
Sigils & Symbols
Things that are specific to you and give you power

what to do when you’re spiritually burnt out 🌜🌻🌛
i’m sure we all have times where we feel like witchcraft is too much, too time consuming, not fulfilling enough, or we just can’t seem to get motivated to actually practice. this is especially true for my spoonie witch self! here are tips i’ve found useful for when i personally feel burnt out.
pace yourself. don’t feel like you have to get back to where you once were in your practice right away. try one tarot card a day. do some light energy work this week. schedule a day to make a tasty potion (hot cocoa potions are the bomb for this) and then watch a movie while you enjoy it.
plan in advance. maybe you can get yourself hyped for a big ritual at the next full moon! write down a day in your planner for a cool event and ration smaller preparatory tasks leading up to it.
practice passively. set a jar on your porch for when the next rain happens to fall, or throw some rose quartz in your makeup bag for your next night out. when you rediscover these things, it can really spark interest and motivation again.
explore nature in solitude. this one is huge. go for a nature walk (yes, I am a city witch and it’s possible!) and collect fallen leaves or wildflowers (cut, don’t pick) that you can use in future work. or, just soak in the awe of earth herself.
research. when you have free time, have a big research day on herbalism, crystals, your dieties, whatever. this one’s also huge for me.
glamour magick. one great active spellwork activity you can do is glamour and self love magick. #glamour magick on here, check out the tag! also recommend @orriculum for these types of spells. they really help you find peace in your craft again.
take a break from it. sometimes we need one. go out with friends and family, focus on school or work, and try your best to remain hopeful. personally, i’ve taken two of these long breaks from my craft. it helped me to rediscover why I’m a witch in the first place.
hope these helped–
until we meet again 🌜🌻🌛
Grimoire Ideas📖✨
since i’m starting to work on getting my own Grimoire better organized and figuring out what i think fits best in it for me, i feel like i should log some ideas that have helped me in my journey in hopes that it could help someone else just starting out. but just remember that your Grimoire is your own and personal to you and you alone so you don’t need to put everything in if it doesn’t vibe well with you or doesn’t fit into your craft. your book should hold things that are personal to you and your craft and what you believe and you don’t need to have every bit of knowledge in your book.

obviously you can pick and choose whatever works best for yourself and your craft, and i don’t even have some of these in my own book but still thought they would be helpful to include for witches like me who are just starting out who need ideas of what their books can hold! i’ll probably start posting more about my grimorire and how i keep it organized as well!
if you think i’ve missed anything feel free to add on more ideas to pass on to your fellow baby witches!
As a follow up to a post about DIY grimoires I saw last night, but can’t find again: Being specialized in grimoires, I have worked with about 200 originals from the 16-/17-/1800’s. Here are a few spreads. As you can see, they are all quite a mess, which means your personal grimoire doesn’t have to be perfect! Also, don’t worry about your book not appearing old and original - it will be in 50 years automatically. (Maybe even sooner, in these times where children almost aren’t taught handwriting anymore) 😄 Stay magical!
Guardian Candles (an original spell)
This is a candle for you to light whenever you are worried for someone. When lit, it will send them positive energy, protection, or whatever your intent behind it states.
Tools:
a candle
healing oil of your choice
incense
Method:
Take a candle that reminds you of the person you want it to represent. It can be anything from their favorite color to one they chose themselves.
Light your incense. Let the scent fill you with calmness as you channel your intent into the candle. Take your oil (I use lavender or chamomile) and anoint the candle by tracing the first letter of their name onto the wax with the pointer finger of your dominant hand. Keep an image of the person in your mind. This oil will provide them with healing.
Hold the candle over the smoke from your incense, turning it a few times to cover it completely. This will help to bless the candle, the smoke acting as a shroud around the person it represents, to protect them from negative energy. While doing this, recite the incantation:
“Candle guide them,
Goddess guard them
Keep them in your sights.
Spirits lift them
Ancients teach them
Surround them with your light.”

How to start practicing magic
I keep getting this question in my inbox so I figured I’d post the answer publicly so I can refer to it instead. First of all though, there are tons of posts about this already and if you do a quick search through the “witchcraft community” tag or “witchcraft 101″ you’ll find a lot of great advice already circulating. What I’m going to outline here is my personal recommendation, and as for all my posts this is the “YMMV” disclaimer (your mileage may vary, i.e. do what works for you and don’t take this as absolute in any way).
Step 1: Pick a spell. Any spell. Seriously, it doesn’t matter. Well… okay, maybe don’t like… try to conjure Baphomet into your living room or something, but pick any rando spell that you feel like doing. Don’t worry about what it is, or who wrote it, or how “authentic” it is. Do these things matter? Sure, maybe, depends on who you ask, but you can figure this stuff out later. For now, just pick a spell. The only real guideline I’ll give here is that it should ideally be something with a measurable result within a reasonable timeframe. I’ll get to why later.
Step 2: Bake a cake. Don’t actually bake a cake (unless you want a cake, in which case by all means please bake a cake), but this is the part where you gather whatever it is you need for the spell and perform it as it’s written. Spells can in some ways be considered recipes in that you want to try following the directions first, and make your changes afterwards. This is especially true for a beginner or someone who doesn’t know what they’re doing yet.
Step 3: Mouth feel. The spell is done, congrats. You probably feel… nothing, tbh, maybe even vague disappointment. Why? Because this wasn’t really your magic yet, and there’s very likely something (maybe even a lot) missing. This is the most crucial part of your process. What were you expecting? What did you like, not like? It’s time to write this down, and if you’re the type of person who wants to keep a grimoire this is a great first entry. Were you hoping for more ritual? Maybe ceremonial magic is what you should look into. Did you want there to be more bubbling cauldrons? Try looking into hearth magic or herbal magic. Were you missing a chant, a poem? Look more into spellcraft and the power of words. Some key subjects you can look up: crystal magic, herbal magic, hearth magic, cosmic magic, spirit work, death magic, healing magic, bane magic, divination, folk magic, chaos magic, technomancy, sigilwork, spellcraft, hedge walking, deity worship, sex magic, blood magic, etc. If any of these sound appealing to you, do a google search and read about them a little more so you can decide whether or not you want to delve in a little further.
Step 4: The cake is a lie. This is where we drop the food metaphors, and get back to that thing I brought up in step one: measurable results within a reasonable timeframe. This is the part that seems to get lost the most in all the advice going around, and in my opinion it’s the second most important (the first one being that practicing magic feels good/right to you). Grimoires aren’t just supposed to be pretty lists of spells and correspondences, they’re supposed to contain spells that actually work. The key here is to figure out what feels right to you as far as method, and then to refine that method to achieve tangible results. If you already feel great doing magic, let me tell you… you’ll feel pretty fucking amazing when your magic starts having an actual effect on the world around you, and it shouldn’t take years of mastery for that to happen. Small magics and simple spells can be done effectively by beginner witches, and these are the things you build upon to form your craft. If your magic isn’t getting results, it’s not magic: it’s ceremony.
Step 5: Rinse and repeat. For most people there is a specific facet of magic that attracted them to it before they ever cast a spell, and while some people might know what it is straight off the bat most people don’t, and that’s fine. You don’t need to know what you’re doing right at the start, and making mistakes isn’t going to curse your house or open up a portal into the dark realms by accident (still assuming you’re doing beginner stuff and not trying to invoke dark spirits to do your bidding or something). The witchcraft side of tumblr can often look really serious and like everyone knows exactly what they’re doing all the time, but the truth of the matter is there’s a lot of trial and error and that’s exactly what magic is supposed to be. If you’re looking towards magic as something to provide all the answers for you, you’re gonna have a real bad time. It’s about looking at how other people have gotten to where you want to go, and forging your own route from there.
On a final note, I’d just like to add that if anyone claims to be an absolute authority on any given topic of witchcraft or occultism, be extremely fucking wary. If anyone is saying you need to pay x amount of money or buy x number of things to be a “real witch”, be extremely fucking wary. Witchcraft existed before money, before capitalism, before industrialization and consumerism.
As always, my inbox is open if you have any questions about this (or anything else). If I don’t know the answer, I can usually point you towards someone who does or at least give you a direction to search in. Happy witching!
