Welcome to the Woods

Hey! I'm Kyan, a queer and trans witch from Quebec. My practice is centered around local folk practices, sustainability, and herbalism. I'm also a tarot reader, fire scryer, and I'm studying to be a clinical herbalist (1st year).

I write original content about witchcraft and related topics, with an extra focus on sustainability. I try to give concrete methods and encourage folks to find ways to make their practice work for them, instead of conforming to some aesthetic or unattainable ideal. I strive to make my articles beginner-friendly, but also useful for more advanced practitioners.

Witchcraft for me started out as a way of exploring boundaries and pushing limits. After fifteen years of practice, I've reconnected to my French Canadian roots, queerness, and all the ways the universe speaks to us. It’s incredibly difficult in today’s capitalist hellscape to carve out time for yourself and your craft, but that’s exactly why it’s so vital, and what I hope to help people navigate.

The only witchy/pagan group within 2 hours of me is a "woman oriented space" that doesn't discriminate based on sexual orientation, religion, or race but I'm guessing being nonbinary and genderqueer means woman+ to them. So that sucks.

I wish my magic focused spaces weren't so rampant with hatred towards men/male presenting people. I wish there weren't so many extremely popular witches who constantly talked about how evil men were and how if you want to practice cursing go on the sex offender registry for funsies.

The thought that I'm finally in a state I could start micro dosing T like I want but that if I start presenting as more male it would mean I'd lose the already miniscule amount of spaces I can comfortably occupy makes me just so depressed.

Y'all need to get you shit together. You can't talk about decolonizing your practice, being inclusive and intersectional, and then say "but men suck and we are women focused but nonbinary people are okay". That shit is fucked and you should know better

all real things i've seen on advertisements for supposed witchcraft, queer, or activist spaces.

what these actually say:

"nonmen" "men are threatening" "inquire within to find out if your gender identification is considered dangerous"

they are also establishing a hierarchy where "women" are the new de-facto top of the hierarchy, and all other genders fall beneath them and are shoved into the "other" group which is gatekept and corralled. not knowing if you fall into "other" or "enemy" groups is a process of humiliation for not knowing without having to ask, or show up and be turned away.

It's the "we need to approve of how you present" while still saying they are all love and acceptance that just makes me want to scream.

I also just assume at this point that these spaces are full of appropriation and racism as well. Because if they can't figure out how being so anti male and anti masc would be harmful I can only imagine how they might feel when someone points out how much appropriation is in all their practices.

seeing all the 14-17 y/o queer kids who don’t know what v for vendetta is…. u mean the blockbuster film written by two trans women about a masked vigilante who decides to singlehandedly take down a fascist alternate version of england set in the distant year of 2020… and his driving force was getting justice for a lesbian who he never met but whose diary he found, who was separated from her wife before being killed by said fascist gov…. and it stars natalie portman…. okay

There’s strong subtext that V is a trans man and A)the lesbian from the diary or B)her wife.

frankly I prefer the movie over the comic, for three reasons:

1) lewis prothero as a rush limbaugh/glenn beck/bill o’reilly type is both more applicable and way funnier than a 1940s radio propagandist 

2) it has stephen fry as gordon detriech, and makes him explicitly gay and pretending to be attracted to evey as part of being closeted than actually attracted to evey and having sex with her while she hides in his home.

3) the movie came out in 2005; that is, only four years after 9/11, while the Iraq war was still in full swing, and while xenophobia and Islamophobia were not just acceptable, but tacitly encouraged by the administration at the time. which makes the following exchange even more poignant and sweet:

Evey: [seeing a book in a glass display case] What is that? Gordon: It’s a copy of the Qur’an, 14th century. Evey: [shocked] Are you a Muslim? Gordon: No, I’m in television. Evey: But why would you keep it? Gordon: I don’t have to be a Muslim to find the images beautiful or its poetry moving.

just… the easy acceptance of it. the idea that a religion that he doesn’t believe in and that has been explicitly outlawed in-universe is a source of beauty. I’m not Muslim, either, but that particular moment really stuck with me emotionally.

Honestly V’s acting is some of the most top notch stuff I’ve ever seen.

The film (which I saw in the theater opening night) was EXPLICITLY made as rebellious pushback against the political environment in the US post 9/11. All of the evil politicians in the film INTENTIONALLY look like US right wing political figures, including Bush, Cheney, and Rush Limbaugh.

It’s not, like, subtle, if you were there at the time. Especially if you compare it to the original novel. (I also prefer the film because it gets rid of the weird sexism.)

However I have to say Natalie Portman’s accent in that movie annoys the fuck outta me. It’s not great. BUT Hugo Weaving is magnificent.

It’s very unfortunate that it’s major cultural impact was through a series of unlikely turns, getting the Guy Fawkes mask adopted as an alt-right symbol. Because like the Matrix, right wing people SUCK at picking up on films themes.
