001. after the bridge explosion and the subsequent fever and sepsis that’d settled in her blood , tris barely pulled through due to klark being able to complete the transfusion , but at a cost. though there was no name for it among the grounders , tris had developed pps ( post - sepsis syndrome ) , and it affected her ability to do everything. she could barely sit up without crippling nausea , though constantly exhausted , sleep always evaded her -- she could no longer hold a sword or fight. everything she had worked for in her short life was crumbling before her fingertips. she was angry. she was furious. her older sister , cali , came from their village to care for her , but she pushed everyone away , onya , cali , everyone.

intense retraining to try and get her body and mind working somewhat again helped , only up to a point. tris can defend herself , long enough to try and gain help from others , but it leaves a bitter taste in her mouth. she is no longer worthy of being anyone’s second anymore.

❝ i can’t do this !! ❞ bone deep exhaustion and irritation from the wetness seeping through her clothing , sticking her skin and making her feel overall digusting -- it gives way to the frustration thrumming in her veins , bleeding into her rough voice. onya just watches her , and tris chokes a growl of anger as she kicks at a bundle of sticks nearby , some small stab of satisfaction. there was so much anger in her , training with onya was helping , but there was always more , burning at her like acid. she was never going to make second at this rate and her throat constricts painfully as she swallows , the thought of going back to her village in disgrace making her chest tight.
