Thank you. For being there for me. I just wanted today to be different than yesterday.
“ homeland. right. okay. cool. hey, you know— “ he leans in, inching forwards on his heels, suddenly serious. “ not really a matter of national security, but we have been finding these feet in our parking lot. like, disembodied feet. no idea where they’re coming from. “ leans back again, a hand patting the surface nearest him. “ i think they’re taking bets on how they get there. serial killer is number one, obviously, but i think disappearing feet plague is buried somewhere on the list. “

“ okay, see, no, i can totally explain this, “ there’s an intent panic rising in his voice, the scanner gun clutched in his hands like a saving grace. he peers around the corner of the aisle, crouched down, finger inching against the trigger, eyes darting from shelf to shelf. “ if you could just— stay very still, thanks, that would be ... “ an arm shooting out around the wall of toilet paper, a click, a beep, a cry of success, arms flying up in victory. then, he leans back on his heels, motioning vaguely to the gun, a tilt of the head. “ we’re at war. oh— hey, did you need something?? “

“ you know, it’s almost like modern art. “ leaned back, an arm slung against an aisle endcap, blue vest hanging from his arm— he watches a customer consider not so carefully the pyramid stack of canned tomato soups with a keen sort of interest, her hands finally grasping at the cool metal cylinder placed firmly in the middle of the pile. the rest fall like dominoes, and he thanks whatever lucky stars he has that he’s firmly and finally clocked out for the night. and yet tomorrow awaits. “ the futility of existence. one wrong move, one tomato soup can out of place, and it all comes crumbling down. could be the latest exhibition at the art institute. “

a note abt my portrayal of jonah is he’s bipolar !!! this is based on lots of personal experience and the small flashes of backstory we’ve gotten from him— his gambling problem was largely the result of mania, as was his two day stay in the hospital for dehydration. he left business school because he was depressed and directionless, and spent most of his high school career the same way. his parents post- his diagnosis mostly smothered him, hence him wanting to get away, and hence in part their literal wailing when they found out he was working at cloud nine, although that was also in part and more obviously due to the ridiculously high expectations they have for him, but more on that later. he’s medicated, mostly stable, and keeps his diagnosis almost entirely to himself, allowing for his coworkers to paint their own pictures of his past.

okay, i’ve made some mistakes, i can admit that, but that doesn’t mean we can’t have a little fun at work, does it? or try to find some moments of beauty in the everyday? — jonah simms. by meg. template credit.
