He moved them to a safer place– that’s good, for now. Luis is already thinking of everyone Scotty knows that might be able to set things straight, to make Kurt’s problem go away for good.

But there were always repercussions, weren’t there? Fuck. 

“He’s good, bro, got a plot next to my mom. It didn’t seem right to keep them apart, you know what I’m saying?” Don’t even ask how much he spent trying to keep his dad alive, in the first place. Medical bills were cheaper in Mexico, but it was still a hit to his pocket. 

“Just glad they let me take him as a carry-on.” 

Kurt watches him with a concerned frown, looking past the nervous jokes to really study his friend.

“Was there funeral?” He hopes not. Luis should not go through that alone. And, while he knows his family would be there, Kurt also knows how difficult things have been since they found out about Scott. Though perhaps they think that’s over now, given how long Luis has been away.

God, neither of them had it good. Luis pulls Kurt into a hug, immediately. He can’t help it, dude looks like he’d been through hell while he was gone, and that was all Luis’ fault too.

He should’ve stayed, should’ve known that– no matter what he did, he’d never get his father’s forgiveness, even at the end.

Kurt was his family through and through, and he abandoned him when Kurt needed him the most. Fuck.

“I’m okay. You?” He messed up good. “Any news ‘bout your family?”

Kurt leans into the hug, and all but melts against his friend before he remembers to hug back. He’s kept to himself for so long, it’s strange to see Luis here. 

“My family’s okay.” He promises, a tiny smile on his lips. Relief probably doesn’t make him look any less tired. “I got in touch with my sister, I’ve uh...I’ve moved them to safer place.”

He’s been keeping a much closer eye on the Bratva and their movements. Who they talk to, and where they operate. Kurt should have left the city, but hopefully they’ll think him smarter than he is and will assume he’s no longer in town.

“Your dad? Is he...” Kurt doesn’t want to ask if he’s okay. Doesn’t want to assume.

      “Ey, I got so much I need to make up to you. I know I up and left, but my dad– he..” These are excuses he shouldn’t be making. He fucked up, and now he needed to make things right again. 

      “I’m sorry, Kurt. For everything, man.”

It hasn’t been a very good year.

With the need to hide comes paranoia, and hyper vigilance. But the lack of those can easily get someone killed. And the people he’s met here, Kurt doesn’t want to see hurt.

At least with Luis gone, and Scott basically a fugitive (hiding with Captain America, last he heard), he only had to keep an eye on Dave. And Cassie. He promised to look after Cassie too.

No, it hasn’t been a very good year.

“Luis." He's still prone to rambling if he's not stopped. "You’re okay?”

He had a lot on his plate when he left. Kurt can’t really blame him. But a call would’ve been nice.

Scotty already thinks my dad is an asshole. I tell him what I want to do, he’s going to be mad about it.

[ And really, there’s been enough of that hasn’t there?

He’s waving the bartender over for another round, a moment’s hesitance, weighing if this shot will push him past faded and into somewhere else, before tossing it back. ]

The less Scott knows now, the better, then– if my dad ends up cool with it, I’ll tell Scott, if not, he doesn’t have to know, you know what I mean?

[ That’s not an argument he can really argue with, not that he’d have a right to. But things have been difficult for Scott and Luis lately, and if this visit goes well, perhaps it might save them both some trouble in the future. For their wedding.

It’s still amazing to even think about. ]

Yes. [ A breath, he downs his shot, and nods, just on the tail end of a grimace. ] Yes, okay.

[ At least Luis won’t be the one who starts the fight, if it breaks out. It also means Kurt will not leave Luis alone with his dad at any point. ]

Good. [He hopes the man they find will be the same one Kurt remembers from a year ago, who serenaded his wife until he got her to smile, regardless of who was present—and not the man who hasn’t said a word to his only son in weeks.]

I hope he listens.

[ A pause. ]

You will tell Scott?

[The next round comes and he downs it. How many was this? Fuck it, he lost count. He’s already thinking about when they should go down to see his old man. When best to do it. Over a weekend? Maybe. 

He hasn’t talked to his dad in weeks since the fight. Since Pilar told him everything with her fucking bias. 

He’s going to have to thank her for that. ]

So, the plan. We’re just going to show up, no telling nobody what’s up, we just go down there, show up at his doorstep and maybe he let’s us in. If he doesn’t, or isn’t there, we break in, simple as that.

[ Kurt downs his drink. He keeps his head down, and waits—tries not to think of times when everything was so much easier. Hoping they make it through this mess—more than one, now, it’s like everyone’s problems have collapsed on top of each other—is the only thing he can do now. 

And make sure Luis doesn’t get in a fight with his dad. Maybe that’s still something that can be fixed. He should tell Dave before they leave. ]

Okay. 

You want to talk to him? Or just fight?

[ He wants to believe it, too. He misses her every day. She would have loved Scott almost as much as he did. Fuck. ]

[ Kurt reaches over and squeezes Luis’ shoulder, and nods at the bartender for another round. With luck, Luis won’t follow through with his goal of drinking the bottle, and he will get them both home in one piece. ]

[ His smile dims, a sober thought crossing his mind. ] Wish mom was around…

[ Kurt hopes there will be no need for him. He hopes Luis’ father can understand how much his son loves Scott. That it’s not something to be cursed but protected. 

He wonders what his family would think of his own choices now. ]

She would be happy for you. [ Though not if she saw Luis like this. ]

[ He smiles into the next shot, lifting it for another. ]

Thanks, man. Ey, he’ll probably be happy to see you. [ At least, he’ll be happy to see one of them. ]

[ He remembers Luis’ dad, just like he knows things didn’t go over well when he found out about Scott. But he can’t still be angry after so long, right? ]

[ A beat. ]

[ It’s a good thing he hadn’t tried drinking his second shot yet, he might have choked. He waits until the bartender is away again, looks at Luis for a moment. This doesn’t sound like drunk talk, somehow. 

He downs his shot. ]

“C’mon man, it’s only breaking and entering if we get caught. If we don’t get caught, then it’s breaking and entering…and leaving.”

Because breaking into Maggie and Paxton’s place in broad daylight was never going to be a good idea, no matter how he phrased it.

[ He downs his shot. He only really drinks tequila with Luis—it always takes a couple shots before he gets used to it. Kurt takes one look at their empty glasses, and tries to remember if he had dinner. ]
